Article Synopsis
  • This study investigated how tributyltin (TBT) affects fertilization and embryo development at various concentrations.
  • Fertilization rates dropped significantly with TBT exposure, especially noticeable at 0.05 ppb, and embryos showed development issues at all tested levels, with complete impairment at 4.68 ppb.
  • Although moving affected embryos to clean media allowed some recovery, their development was still not fully restored, indicating TBT's harmful effects on early-stage embryonic development.

Global deoxygenation in aquatic systems is an increasing environmental problem, and substantial oxygen loss has been reported. Aquatic animals have been continuously exposed to hypoxic environments, so-called "dead zones," in which severe die-offs among organisms are driven by low-oxygen events. Multiple studies of hypoxia exposure have focused on in vivo endpoints, metabolism, oxidative stress, and immune responses in aquatic invertebrates such as molluscs, crustaceans, echinoderms, and cnidarians.

Because nanoplastics (NPs) can transport pollutants, the absorption of surrounding pollutants into NPs and their effects are important environmental issues. This study shows a combined effect of high concentrations of NPs and copper (Cu) in the marine rotifer Brachionus plicatilis. Co-exposure decreased the growth rate, reproduction, and lifespan.

Article Synopsis
  • Marine microplastics (MPs), particularly polystyrene (PS), are ingested and egested by Pacific oysters (Crasostrea gigas), with a significant portion being retained after 7 days of exposure to 300 n/L of PS.
  • Ingestion peaked within 6 hours, with up to 60.4% of the PS ingested, while the maximum ingestion capacity was calculated at 73.0 n/g wet weight.
  • Smaller PS MPs (<50 μm) were found to have higher ingestion and egestion rates compared to larger sizes, suggesting that smaller particles pose a greater risk to human health via maricultural products, although depuration could mitigate this risk.

Besides the adverse biological effects induced by microplastics (MPs), the effects associated with sorption of ambient pollutants on MPs are considered as an emerging environmental problem as MPs act as a mediator of pollutants. The present study examines the combined effects of nano(micro)plastics (NMPs) and arsenic (As) by exposing the marine rotifer Brachionus plicatilis to MP particles at the micro-scale (6 μm) and nano-scale (nanoplastics, NPs) (50 nm) along with As. In vivo toxicity, bioaccumulation, and biochemical reactions were used to examine the effects of combined exposure.

Parabens are used as a preservative substance in a wide range of man-made products causing deleterious effects on aquatic organisms and therefore, the concern of their effects to aquatic organisms has been increased. In this study, acute toxicity of methylparaben (MeP), ethylparaben (EtP), and propylparaben (PrP) was assessed in the marine copepod Tigriopus japonicus. The acute toxicity assessment resulted in the median lethal concentration (LC50) values of MeP, EtP, and PrP were 29,754, 11,659, and 113 μg/L, respectively, for male and 38,183, 15,371, and 357 μg/L, respectively, for female, indicating the strongest toxicity of PrP, compared to MeP and EtP and the higher sensitivity of males compared to females.

Lead (Pb) is a highly toxic metal in aquatic environments. Fish are at the top of the food chain in most aquatic environments, and are the most susceptible to the toxic effects of Pb exposure. In addition, fish are one of the most abundant vertebrates, and they can directly affect humans through food intake; therefore, fish can be used to assess the extent of environmental pollution in an aquatic environment.

Article Synopsis
  • The study evaluated the toxic effects of paracetamol and oxytetracycline on the marine rotifer Brachionus rotundiformis, finding that even low concentrations can induce oxidative stress and increase detoxification enzyme activity.
  • Despite the oxidative stress, the rotifers showed no significant changes in population growth, indicating they can tolerate these pharmaceuticals better than previously thought.
  • Gene expression analysis revealed specific cytochrome P450 and glutathione S-transferase genes are involved in detoxifying these drugs, supporting the idea that low-level exposure does not adversely affect rotifer populations.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study assessed how different doses of water accommodated fractions (WAFs) of crude oil affected the growth, reproduction, and lifespan of the rotifer Brachionus koreanus over 24 hours, finding that higher WAF doses led to decreased reproduction and lifespan.
  • - A specific gene (Bk-CYP3045C1) showed increased expression in response to WAF exposure, alongside other genes related to detoxification and stress response, indicating a biological reaction to the harmful compounds in WAFs like naphthalene and phenanthrene.
  • - While WAFs did not significantly reduce survival rates in rotifers, introducing piperonyl butoxide revealed dose-dependent toxicity, suggesting that WAFs could
