Excess Mortality in Istanbul during Extreme Heat Waves between 2013 and 2017.

Heat waves are one of the most common direct impacts of anthropogenic climate change and excess mortality their most apparent impact. While Turkey has experienced an increase in heat wave episodes between 1971 and 2016, no epidemiological studies have examined their potential impacts on public health so far. In this study excess mortality in Istanbul attributable to extreme heat wave episodes between 2013 and 2017 is presented.

Urogenital and Rectal Multisystem Organ Injury After Detonation of an Explosive Substance in the Rectum of a Schizophrenic Man.

Penetrating injuries are caused by the injury of perineal area with gun or stab wounds, which may cause complex injuries or multiple organ injuries. Infections, bleeding, necrotizing fasciitis, ureterocutaneous fistulas, diverticulum, abscesses, narrowing, and incontinence may arise after urethral injuries. Although there are several case reports of urogenital system traumas in the literature, this case reports a schizophrenic patient who had a multisystem genitourinary and rectal trauma after self-detonation of an explosive in the rectum and managed with reconstructive surgery without any postoperative complications.

Demonstration control agents: evaluation of 64 cases after massive use in Istanbul.

An uncontrolled use of "demonstration control agents" commonly known as "teargas agents" has recently been a common practice in Turkey. One of the first massive uses of these agents had been during a meeting of the North Atlantic Council and NATO in 2004, in Istanbul. After the demonstrations, 64 patients were evaluated and treated by the Human Rights Foundation of Turkey.

A significant diagnostic method in torture investigation: bone scintigraphy.

Torture appears to be a permanent feature in countries, which have experienced military coups or ruled by oppressive governments in the past, such as Turkey. The Human Rights Foundation of Turkey (HRFT) was established in 1990 to serve torture victims, mainly those who were the victims of the 1980 military regime. Since then the HRFT has been providing rehabilitation and documentation for torture survivors.

Effect of preoperative immunonutrition and other nutrition models on cellular immune parameters.

Aim: To evaluate the effects of preoperative immunonutrition and other nutrition models on the cellular immunity parameters of patients with gastrointestinal tumors before surgical intervention. In addition, effects on postoperative complications were examined.

Methods: Patients with gastrointestinal tumors were randomized into 3 groups.

Traumatic lumbar hernia.

Traumatic lumbar hernia is a rare consequence of blunt abdominal injury. In these cases, intraabdominal visceral injuries are common. Although physical examination is important for this diagnosis, computed tomography is valuable for confirming the diagnosis, eliminating associated intraabdominal injuries and deciding the treatment modality of traumatic lumbar hernia.

Intestinal obstruction due to spontaneous intramural hematoma of the small intestine during warfarin use: a report of two cases.

Warfarin-dependent spontaneous intramural hematoma of the small intestine is a rare complication. The first symptom is usually abdominal pain, frequently accompanied by nausea and vomiting. In some cases, concomitant gastrointestinal bleeding might be seen.
