Effect of surgical complications on outcomes of children with hepatoblastoma: a retrospective cohort study.

Purpose: This study aimed to investigate the incidence of severe surgical complications among children with hepatoblastoma, identify their risk factors, and evaluate the influence of surgical complications on long-term outcomes.

Methods: Children with hepatoblastoma who underwent liver resection at our hospital between September 1992 and January 2023 were included in this study. Clinical data were retrospectively reviewed, and patients were categorized into complication and non-complication groups based on the need for radiological or surgical interventions or massive intraoperative blood loss (> 80 mL/kg).

Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) is an increasingly diagnosed cancer that kills 90% of afflicted patients, with most patients receiving palliative chemotherapy. We identified neuronal pentraxin 1 (NPTX1) as a cancer-secreted protein that becomes overexpressed in human and murine PDAC cells during metastatic progression and identified adhesion molecule with Ig-like domain 2 (AMIGO2) as its receptor. Molecular, genetic, biochemical, and pharmacologic experiments revealed that secreted NPTX1 acts cell-autonomously on the AMIGO2 receptor to drive PDAC metastatic colonization of the liver-the primary site of PDAC metastasis.

An earthquake with a moment magnitude of 7.5 (Mw) struck the northern Noto Peninsula, Ishikawa Prefecture, Japan, at 16:10 local time on January 1, 2024. This earthquake triggered a tsunami that propagated along the coastline of Ishikawa, Toyama, and Niigata Prefectures facing the Sea of Japan and significantly damaged coastal communities and infrastructure.

Outcomes of surgical treatment for enterovesical fistula in Crohn's disease.

Enterovesical fistula (EVF) in Crohn's disease (CD) often does not improve with medical treatment and requires surgical treatment. The surgical treatment strategy for EVF in CD is definitive resection of the intestinal tract side, and performing a leak test using dye injection into the bladder after EVF dissection to determine the appropriate surgical procedure for the bladder side. This study aimed to evaluate the outcomes of surgical treatment for EVF in CD.

Prognostic Impact of Mutations Associated With Smoking and Drinking History in Japanese Digestive Cancers.

Background/aim: Organs of the digestive system are frequent sites of cancer development, and digestive tract cancers are the leading causes of death worldwide, including in Japan. Most of these cancers are associated with smoking or drinking habits. This study focused on the clinical and genomic characteristics of patients with these cancers using the Center for Cancer Genomics and Advanced Therapeutics (C-CAT) database, which comprises a large volume of data on Japanese patients who have undergone tumor profiling gene panel tests.

Background: Esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) has a poor prognosis despite advances in multidisciplinary treatments and immune checkpoint inhibitors. We previously reported that neural pentraxin receptor (NPTXR), a transmembrane protein mainly expressed in the brain and involved in synaptic transmission, is implicated in gastric cancer malignancy. This study evaluated the expression and function of NPTXR in ESCC, the therapeutic potential of monoclonal antibody (mAb) against NPTXR, and its prognostic value in ESCC patients.

Risk Factors for Long-term Body Weight Loss After Proximal Gastrectomy: A Retrospective Analysis.

Background/aim: Proximal gastrectomy (PG) is a therapy for early-stage proximal gastric cancer and offers advantages such as the preservation of food storage capacity and less body weight loss (BWL). Nevertheless, significant BWL following PG may occur, affecting the patient's well-being and survival. Objectives: We aimed to psychometrically evaluate and validate a Japanese version of the Social Functioning in Dementia scale (SF-DEM-J) and investigate changes in social function in people with dementia during the coronavirus disease-19 (COVID-19) pandemic.

Design: We interviewed people with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and mild dementia and their caregivers during June 2020-March 2021 to validate patient- and caregiver-rated SF-DEM-J and compared their scores at baseline (April 2020 to May 2020) and at 6-8 months (January 2021 to March 2021) during a time of tighter COVID-19 restrictions.
