Study Design: We enrolled a total of 595 patients for this cross-sectional study and divided them into 2 groups: healthy controls (n = 320) and patients with OSF (n = 275). Further, patients with OSF were subdivided based on their histologic gradings.

Recent data reveal that procalcitonin (PCT) is a valid marker for the diagnosis of bacterial infections compared with traditional markers like white blood cell count, C-reactive protein levels, and erythrocyte sedimentation rate in DFU patients. Furthermore, cytokines are proposed to act as modulators and mediators for the expression and release of PCT into the circulation.
