Introduction: Pheochromocytomas are catecholamine-secreting tumors arising from chromaffin cells of the adrenal gland. Surgery is the only curative treatment with a high biochemical cure rate, low mortality and high risk of perioperative complications.

Objectives: To study the demographic characteristics of patients with pheochromocytoma and to identify the risk factors for perioperative complications, treatment outcomes, and aggressive behavior of the tumor.

Introduction: Cortisol secretion is regulated by circadian rhythm, which is influenced by zeitgebers like light. In India, the entire country operates under a single time zone, Indian Standard Time, which may not align with the local sunrise timing across different regions.

Aims: This study aimed to compare the basal serum cortisol levels between 06:00 AM and 09:00 AM in Guwahati, Assam, where sunrise occurs earlier compared with the western part of the country.

Background: Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) is the most common metabolic disorder in the reproductive age group, the pathogenesis of which is constantly evolving with the discovery of novel molecules and the lookout for potential therapeutic targets.

Aims: The aim of the present study was to estimate the circulating levels of serum adiponectin in patients with PCOS compared to controls and to find its correlation with markers of cardiovascular risk, with special emphasis on circulating levels of oxidised low-density lipoprotein (oxLDL).

Settings And Design: In this cross-sectional observational study recently diagnosed, PCOS subjects were compared with age- and body mass index (BMI)-matched controls.

Article Synopsis
  • - Osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) is a genetic disorder that leads to fragile bones, causing frequent fractures, pain, and developmental delays; pamidronate is a known treatment, while zoledronic acid (ZA) is being explored as a newer option.
  • - A study was conducted to evaluate the efficacy and safety of ZA in young children under five with OI, administering the drug every six months and monitoring various clinical and biochemical factors over two years.
  • - Results demonstrated that ZA significantly reduced fracture rates, improved mobility and pain levels, and enhanced growth in these patients, with minimal side effects, positioning ZA as a safe and effective alternative to traditional treatments.

Article Synopsis
  • Adrenal incidentalomas (AIs) occur in about 2% of healthy individuals and need thorough evaluation to check for hormone excess and cancer risk before treatment.
  • The study looked at the clinical, biochemical, and imaging characteristics of 48 patients with AIs, noting that most had hormone-secreting masses and common diagnoses included myelolipoma and pheochromocytoma.
  • Findings suggested that discrepancies can exist between imaging and actual hormonal activity, highlighting the need for careful evaluation in rare cases like extramedullary erythropoiesis and adrenal insufficiency in AIs.

Background: Endogenous sex hormones and sex hormone-binding globulins (SHBG) determine the risk of occurrence of Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) in postmenopausal (PM) women.

Aims: To investigate the association between sex hormones (estradiol and testosterone) and SHBG with plasma glucose, fasting insulin levels, HbA1c, and homeostasis model assessment insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) and also to investigate independent role of sex hormones in the occurrence of T2DM among PM.

Settings And Design: Cross-sectional case-control study.

Background: Disorders of sex development (DSD) are a wide range of relatively rare conditions having diverse pathophysiology. Identification of an underlying cause can help in treating any coexisting hormone deficiencies and can help with anticipating any other immediate or long-term health concerns.

Objective: To study the clinical and biochemical profile of patients with 46 XY DSD along with androgen receptor (AR) gene mutation status in selected group of patients.

Context: The last few decades have witnessed an alarming increase in the prevalence of the metabolic syndrome (MetS) worldwide including India. Apart from the known risks of MetS in terms of cardiovascular risk and mortality, there is increasing evidence that it also leads to alteration in testicular function and fertility.

Aims: To assess the presence of hypogonadism and Sertoli cell dysfunction in young adult males with MetS and correlate these parameters with different components of the MetS.

Context: Sex hormones levels determine the risk of occurrence of coronary artery disease (CAD) in post-menopausal (PM) women.

Aims: To investigate the relationship between sex hormones (estradiol and testosterone)/sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG) and cardiovascular risk factors in PM women. Background: Diabetic nephropathy (DN) occurs in 20%-40% of patients with diabetes, and it is characterized by proteinuria and progressive loss of renal functions ultimately leading to end-stage renal disease. Classically, albuminuria is regarded as a consequence of diabetes-induced glomerular damage. It is now being appreciated that the renal tubulointerstitium also plays a role in the development of DN.
