Superlattices (SLs) comprising layers of a soft ferromagnetic metal LaSrMnO (LSMO) with in-plane (IP) magnetic easy axis and a hard ferromagnetic insulator LaMnCoO (LMCO, out-of-plane anisotropy) were grown on SrTiO (100)(STO) substrates by a metalorganic aerosol deposition technique. Exchange spring magnetic (ESM) behavior between LSMO and LMCO, manifested by a spin reorientation transition of the LSMO layers towards perpendicular magnetic anisotropy below = 260 K, was observed. Further, 3ω measurements of the [(LMCO)/(LSMO)]/STO(100) superlattices revealed extremely low values of the cross-plane thermal conductivity (300 K) = 0.

One of the key phenomena that determine the fluorescence of nanocrystals is the nonradiative Auger-Meitner recombination of excitons. This nonradiative rate affects the nanocrystals' fluorescence intensity, excited state lifetime, and quantum yield. Whereas most of the above properties can be directly measured, the quantum yield is the most difficult to assess.

Transmission electron microscopy has become a major characterization tool with an ever increasing variety of methods being applied in a wide range of scientific fields. However, the probably most famous pitfall in related workflows is the preparation of high-quality electron-transparent lamellae enabling for extraction of valuable information. Particularly in the field of solid state physics and materials science, it often required to study the surface of a macroscopic specimen with plan-view orientation.

Insights into the local atomic arrangements of layered Ge-Sb-Te compounds are of particular importance from a fundamental point of view and for data storage applications. In this view, a detailed knowledge of the atomic structure in such alloys is central to understanding the functional properties both in the more commonly utilized amorphous-crystalline transition and in recently proposed interfacial phase change memory based on the transition between two crystalline structures. Aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy allows direct imaging of local arrangement in the crystalline lattice with atomic resolution.
