Nursing practice in nutritional care: a comparison between a residential aged care setting and a hospital setting.

Aim: To explore the similarities and differences in the nursing practice in nutritional care between a residential aged care setting and a hospital setting.

Background: Despite being preventable and treatable, undernutrition remains a problem for many older people in residential aged care and hospital settings. Nurses have a crucial role in assisting people who are unable to eat independently and are uniquely positioned to implement solutions that will lead to better nutritional care.

TRAF3 regulates the effector function of regulatory T cells and humoral immune responses.

Regulatory T cells (Treg cells) control different aspects of immune responses, but how the effector functions of Treg cells are regulated is incompletely understood. Here we identified TNF receptor-associated factor 3 (TRAF3) as a regulator of Treg cell function. Treg cell-specific ablation of TRAF3 impaired CD4 T cell homeostasis, characterized by an increase in the Th1 type of effector/memory T cells.

Intratumoral mast cells promote the growth of pancreatic cancer.

We have recently discovered that mast cells promote pancreatic tumorigenesis by exacerbating the cellular and extracellular signaling in the desmoplastic microenvironment. Our findings demonstrate for the first time that targeting mast cells can block the progression of pancreatic neoplasms and prolong the survival of tumor-bearing immunocompetent hosts.

Adult antisocial syndrome co-morbid with borderline personality disorder is associated with severe conduct disorder, substance dependence and violent antisociality.

This study tested the hypothesis that syndromal adult antisocial behaviour (AABS) co-morbid with borderline personality disorder (BPD) is a syndrome that emerges from severe conduct disorder (CD) in childhood and adolescence and is strongly associated, in adulthood, with both violence and substance dependence. In a sample of 8 580 community-resident adults screened for the presence of personality disorders, the following predictions arising from this hypothesis were tested: first, that those with AABS co-morbid with BPD would, in comparison with those showing AABS or BPD only, show a high level of antisocial outcomes, including violence; second, that adjusting for co-morbid alcohol dependence would attenuate group differences in many of the antisocial outcomes, and violence in particular; and third, that the AABS/BPD group would show both a high prevalence and a high severity of CD, and that adjusting for co-morbid CD would attenuate any association found between AABS/BPD co-morbidity and violence. Results confirmed these predictions, suggesting that AABS/BPD co-morbidity mediates the relationship between childhood CD and a predisposition to adult violence.

Developing evidence-based practice champions in the Maldives.

Evidence-based practice (EBP) is an approach that has gained recognition for facilitating the transfer of evidence into clinical practice. EBP champions is a strategy that can be adopted to encourage the uptake of EBP. This paper describes an action research project that was undertaken in Maldives.

Paramagnetic doping of a 7TM membrane protein in lipid bilayers by Gd³⁺-complexes for solid-state NMR spectroscopy.

A considerable limitation of NMR spectroscopy is its inherent low sensitivity. Approximately 90 % of the measuring time is used by the spin system to return to its Boltzmann equilibrium after excitation, which is determined by (1)H-T1 in cross-polarized solid-state NMR experiments. It has been shown that sample doping by paramagnetic relaxation agents such as Cu(2+)-EDTA accelerates this process considerably resulting in enhanced sensitivity.

High sensitive vectorial B-probe for low frequency plasma waves.

A miniaturized multidimensional magnetic probe is developed for application in a low-temperature plasma environment. A very high sensitivity for low-frequency magnetic field fluctuations with constant phase run, a very good signal-to-noise ratio combined with an efficient electrostatic pickup rejection, renders the probe superior compared with any commercial solution. A two-step calibration allows for absolute measurement of amplitude and direction of magnetic field fluctuations.

Association of violence with emergence of persecutory delusions in untreated schizophrenia.

Objective: Psychosis is considered an important risk factor for violence, but studies show inconsistent results. The mechanism through which psychotic disorders influence violence also remains uncertain. The authors investigated whether psychosis increased the risk of violent behavior among released prisoners and whether treatment reduced this risk.

Person-centred care in the Indonesian health-care system.

Person-centred care (PCC) is defined as the health-care providers selecting and delivering interventions or treatments that are respectful of and responsive to the characteristics, needs, preferences and values of the individual person. This model of care puts the person at the centre of care delivery. The World Health Organization suggests that PCC is one of the essential dimensions of health care and as such is an important indicator of health-care quality.

BRAF inhibitors suppress apoptosis through off-target inhibition of JNK signaling.

Vemurafenib and dabrafenib selectively inhibit the v-Raf murine sarcoma viral oncogene homolog B1 (BRAF) kinase, resulting in high response rates and increased survival in melanoma. Approximately 22% of individuals treated with vemurafenib develop cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (cSCC) during therapy. The prevailing explanation for this is drug-induced paradoxical ERK activation, resulting in hyperproliferation.

The PFP/RAG2 double-knockout mouse in metastasis research: small-cell lung cancer and prostate cancer.

Patients with small-cell lung cancer (SCLC) and prostate cancer (PCa) as well as other solid tumors may have micro- or macro-metastatic spread at an early stage of the disease. SCLC and PCa xenograft transfer models in immunodeficient mice fail to model this metastatic spread in vivo. In both tumor types the depletion of NK cells found in immunodeficient mice results in an increased number of spontaneous metastases, mirroring the clinical situation where NK cell activity in patients is related to metastatic spread of the disease.

Increased expression of complement regulators CD55 and CD59 on peripheral blood cells in patients with EAHEC O104:H4 infection.

Background: An outbreak of Shiga Toxin 2 (Stx-2) producing enterohemorrhagic and enteroaggregative E.coli (EAHEC) O104H4 infection in May 2011 caused enterocolitis and an unprecedented high 22% rate of hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS). The monoclonal anti-C5 antibody Eculizumab (ECU) has been used experimentally in EAHEC patients with HUS but treatment efficacy is uncertain.

Predicting future violence among individuals with psychopathy.

Structured risk assessment aims to help clinicians classify offenders according to likelihood of future violent and criminal behaviour. We investigated how confident clinicians can be using three commonly used instruments (HCR-20, VRAG, OGRS-II) in individuals with different diagnoses. Moderate to good predictive accuracy for future violence was achieved for released prisoners with no mental disorder, low to moderate for clinical syndromes and personality disorder, but accuracy was no better than chance for individuals with psychopathy.

Delusions, anger, and serious violence: new findings from the MacArthur Violence Risk Assessment Study.

Introduction: Recent research on the association between delusions and violence has suggested complex and differing pathways. Furthermore, it has been emphasized that temporal proximity is fundamental when investigating these relationships. We reanalyzed data from the MacArthur Violence Risk Assessment Study utilizing a different methodological approach to investigate associations between specific delusions and violence.

Nor-1, a novel incretin-responsive regulator of insulin genes and insulin secretion.

B-cell failure at the onset of type 2 diabetes is caused by a decline in β-cell function in the postprandial state and loss of pancreatic β-cell mass. Recently, we showed an association between increased insulin secretion and a single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP), SNP rs12686676, in the NR4A3 gene locus encoding the nuclear receptor Nor-1. Nor-1 is expressed in β-cells, however, not much is known about its function with regard to insulin gene expression and insulin secretion.

Probing ultrafast dynamics in photoexcited pyrrole: timescales for pi sigma* mediated H-atom elimination.

The heteroaromatic ultraviolet chromophore pyrrole is found as a subunit in a number of important biomolecules: it is present in heme, the non-protein component of hemoglobin, and in the amino acid tryptophan. To date there have been several experimental studies, in both the time- and frequency-domains, which have interrogated the excited state dynamics of pyrrole. In this work, we specifically aim to unravel any differences in the H-atom elimination dynamics from pyrrole across an excitation wavelength range of 250-200 nm, which encompasses: (i) direct excitation to the (formally electric dipole forbidden) 1(1)pisigma* (1A2) state; and (ii) initial photoexcitation to the higher energy 1 pipi* (1B2) state.

An essential role for platelet-activating factor in activating mast cell migration following ultraviolet irradiation.

The UVB (290-320 nm) radiation in sunlight is responsible for inducing skin cancer. Exposure to UV radiation is also immunosuppressive, and the systemic immune suppression induced by UV is a well-recognized risk factor for cancer induction. As UVB radiation is absorbed within the upper layers of the skin, indirect mechanisms must play a role in activating systemic immune suppression.

E- and p-selectins are essential for repopulation of chronic myelogenous and chronic eosinophilic leukemias in a scid mouse xenograft model.

In chronic myelogenous (CML) and chronic eosinophilic leukemia (CEL), neoplastic cells spread via the circulation into various extramedullary organs. As E- and P-selectin constitute the starting point for the leucocyte adhesion/invasion cascade, and CEL and CML cells share many properties with normal granulocytes, we investigated the role of these selectins in CEL and CML cell expansion and organ invasion in a xenotransplantation model using scid mice. Using two human leukemic cell lines (EOL-1 and K562), we were able to show that E- and P-selectins mediate leukemia cell tethering and adherence in a laminar flow assay.

The EF loop in green proteorhodopsin affects conformation and photocycle dynamics.

The proteorhodopsin family consists of retinal proteins of marine bacterial origin with optical properties adjusted to their local environments. For green proteorhodopsin, a highly specific mutation in the EF loop, A178R, has been found to cause a surprisingly large redshift of 20 nm despite its distance from the chromophore. Here, we analyze structural and functional consequences of this EF loop mutation by time-resolved optical spectroscopy and solid-state NMR.

Gang membership, violence, and psychiatric morbidity.

Objective: Gang members engage in many high-risk activities associated with psychiatric morbidity, particularly violence-related ones. The authors investigated associations between gang membership, violent behavior, psychiatric morbidity, and use of mental health services.

Method: The authors conducted a cross-sectional survey of 4,664 men 18-34 years of age in Great Britain using random location sampling.

Perspectives in enzymology of membrane proteins by solid-state NMR.

Membrane proteins catalyze reactions at the cell membrane and facilitate thetransport of molecules or signals across the membrane. Recently researchers have made great progress in understanding the structural biology of membrane proteins, mainly based on X-ray crystallography. In addition, the application of complementary spectroscopic techniques has allowed researchers to develop a functional understanding of these proteins.

The peptide transporter PEPT1 is expressed in distal colon in rodents and humans and contributes to water absorption.

The peptide transporter PEPT1, expressed in the brush border membrane of enterocytes, mediates the uptake of di- and tripeptides from luminal protein digestion in the small intestine. PEPT1 was proposed not to be expressed in normal colonic mucosa but may become detectable in inflammatory states such as Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis. We reassessed colonic expression of PEPT1 by performing a systematic analysis of PEPT1 mRNA and protein levels in healthy colonic tissues in mice, rats, and humans.

Electrorheological fluids based on metallo-supramolecular polyelectrolyte-silicate composites.

We present an innovative concept for the design of electrorheological fluids (ERF) based on a dispersed phase of rigid-rod-shaped metallo-supramolecular polyelectrolytes (MEPE) intercalated in mesoporous SBA-15 silica. While applying an electric field to this composite dispersed in silicone oil, rheological measurements reveal a strong increase in the storage modulus, indicating the solidification of the fluid. Besides the strong electrorheological effect and the low current densities, we note that the required amount of MEPE is five times lower than in comparable host-guest ERFs.
