Neuroendocrine neoplasms (NENs) of the esophagogastric junction (EGJ) are uncommon and the classification of these tumors has been revised several times. Since 2016, at the Department of Pathology, Rigshospitalet, Denmark, all adenocarcinomas and poorly differentiated carcinomas of the EGJ have been stained routinely with the neuroendocrine markers, synaptophysin and chromogranin A, to detect a possible neuroendocrine component. This study aimed to determine if routine immunohistochemical staining is necessary to detect neuroendocrine differentiation of the EGJ tumors by evaluating how often a neuroendocrine component of the tumors was correctly identified or missed on routine hematoxylin and eosin-stained slides, and by evaluating the interobserver agreement among several pathologists.

Background/introduction: Lymphocytic colitis (LC) and the incomplete form (LCi) are common causes of chronic watery diarrhea. Endoscopy is often inconspicuous, and the diagnosis relies on histopathological assessment of colonic biopsies. Digital Image Analysis (DIA) eliminates interobserver variation.

Purpose: The aim of this study was to develop an automated image analysis software to measure the thickness of the subepithelial collagenous band in colon biopsies with collagenous colitis (CC) and incomplete CC (CCi). The software measures the thickness of the collagenous band on microscopic slides stained with Van Gieson (VG).

Patients And Methods: A training set consisting of ten biopsies diagnosed as CC, CCi, and normal colon mucosa was used to develop the automated image analysis (VG app) to match the assessment by a pathologist.

Microscopic colitis (MC) is a common cause of chronic watery diarrhea. Traditionally, MC encompasses the 2 subgroups lymphocytic colitis (LC) and collagenous colitis, but recently, an additional subgroup, MC incomplete, has been introduced. Distinguishing between the subgroups relies exclusively on histopathologic evaluation.

Background: Resection of colon cancer with curative intent implies clear margins. An arbitrary requirement of 2 cm DtLM generally ensures surgical and pathological clearance. However, harvest of tumor-draining lymph nodes is related to DtLM.

Tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) is highly upregulated in inflammation and reduces the expression of the intestinal transcription factor, Caudal-related homeobox transcription factor 2 (CDX2). Wnt/β-catenin signaling is critical for intestinal cell proliferation, but a decreased CDX2 expression has influence on the Wnt signaling-related genes and progression of colorectal cancer. Although several inflammatory signaling pathways, including TNF-α, have been reported to promote Wnt/β-catenin activity and development of cancer, the underlying molecular mechanisms remain unclear.

Wnt signaling is often constitutively active in colorectal cancer cells. The expression of the intestinal specific transcription factor CDX2 is found to be transiently decreased in invasive cells at the tumor/stroma interface. A recent ChIP-Seq study has indicated that several Wnt signaling-related genes are regulated by CDX2.

Aim: To assess the prevalence of acquired diverticulum of the appendix (DA), including incipient forms and its possible significance as a marker of local/regional neoplasms.

Materials And Methods: The pathology database at Hvidovre Hospital was searched for appendix specimens, received between 2001 and 2010, coded for DA or for a space-occupying lesion. Slides were reviewed to determine DA status and the nature of lesions possibly causing DA.

The invasive front of the colorectal carcinoma (CRC) in some cases displays budding, characterized by groups of up to five tumour cells. In 2006, budding was introduced in the Danish Colorectal Cancer Group's (DCCG) and the Danish Society of Pathology and Cytology's (DSPAC) CRC register form. Based on a literature survey, molecular mechanisms that may contribute to budding are reviewed, as is the mode by which this process is registered and its putative clinical significance.

Introduction: The number of identified lymph nodes (LNs) is an essential element in the pathologist's rapport on colorectal resection specimens with carcinoma (CRSC). A considerable number of papers discuss the acceptable minimum number of identified LNs to secure a correct LN status (LNS). Details as to the most appropriate grossing technique for LN detection are, however, largely lacking.

Colorectal carcinoma is one of the most prevalent malignancies in Western countries. Lymph node status is a significant prognosticator. The chance of identifying node-positivity is positively correlated with the number of lymph nodes (LN) identified.

Although the occasional appearance of a normal histology of biopsies from endoscopic colorectal (CR) polyps is generally held knowledge, its prevalence has rarely been focused on, and the yield of additional sections in such cases has been previously addressed in merely four communications. Hitherto, this issue has not been discussed in the context of the clinical setting. The prime aim of this study was to evaluate the yield of step sectioning CR biopsies, considered non-diagnostic (non-diagnostic biopsies (NDB)) on routine sections.

On profile radiographs of adults, an association between fusions of cervical vertebrae, deviations in the cranial base and mandibular retrognathia has been documented radiographically. An elaboration of this association on a histological level is needed. In human triploid fetuses severe mandibular retrognathia and deviations in the cranial base have previously been described radiographically (without cephalometry) and cervical column fusions radiographically as well as histologically.

Sildenafil (Viagra), a selective inhibitor of phosphodiesterase 5 (PDE5), induces headache and migraine. Although previously supposed to be a "vascular" headache, no significant cerebral artery dilatation was found in vivo. Thus, we hypothesised that PDE5 may not be present or that sildenafil is less effective on the cGMP hydrolysis in cerebral arteries, and that sildenafil may not be an effective dilator of cerebral arteries under baseline conditions.

We report on a liveborn infant with trisomy 10 mosaicism combined with maternal uniparental heterodisomy for chromosome 10. The mosaicism 47,XY,+10/46,XY was found in five different tissues, including one blood sample, while cultured lymphocytes from two other blood samples showed a normal karyotype, 46,XY. DNA analysis with six PCR-based microsatellite markers demonstrated the trisomic cell line to be a result of maternal meiotic nondisjunction, and revealed maternal uniparental heterodisomy in the diploid cell line, suggesting that the formation of the diploid cell line was due to trisomy rescue.

The aim of the present study was to compare in man the innervation pattern and the functional responses to neuronal messengers in medium sized lenticulostriate and branches of the posterior cerebral arteries (PCA). The majority of the nerve fibers found were sympathetic and displayed specific immunoreactivity for tyrosine hydroxylase (TH) and neuropeptide Y (NPY). Only few nerve fibers displayed vasoactive intestinal polypeptide (VIP), calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) and substance P (SP) immunoreactivity.

The purpose of the present study was to characterize the effects of human (h) alpha- and beta-calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) on intracranial arteries from man and to investigate the presence of mRNA for the calcitonin receptor like receptor (CRLR) and the receptor activity modifying proteins (RAMPs) 1, 2 and 3, in cerebral and middle meningeal arteries with and without endothelium, in microvessels and in the endothelial cells isolated from the human basilar artery. Reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) revealed the presence of CRLR, RAMP 1, RAMP 2 and RAMP 3 in cerebral and middle meningeal arteries with and without endothelium as well as in microvessels and in the endothelial cells. Human and rat alpha- and beta-CGRP, amylin, adrenomedullin and [acetamidomethyl-Cys(2,7)]human CGRP induced strong concentration-dependent relaxation of human cerebral and middle meningeal arteries.
