Effect of nutrient enrichment on seagrass associated meiofauna in Tanzania.

Abundance, diversity and community structure of meiofauna, with special emphasis on epiphytic harpacticoid copepods, occurring in Tanzanian seagrass beds under various nutrient inputs was determined. All measured parameters for epiphytic meiofauna and diatoms (fucoxanthin) were negatively affected by nutrient input and this was detected even at the higher taxonomic levels of meiofauna, supporting the validity of higher taxon surrogacy in environmental impact studies. However, benthic meiofauna and other biofilm characteristics (chlorophyll a) did not show any difference between sites suggesting that nutrient enrichment had less impact on these variables.

Pedestrian intoxication and fatal traffic accident injury patterns.

Introduction: Sixteen percent of all motor-vehicle fatalities are pedestrian, and accidents involving pedestrians are associated with the highest morbidity and mortality rates. Classic pedestrian injury patterns have been described. However, it has been suggested that the pattern may differ if the pedestrian is intoxicated.

Aortic injury in vehicular trauma.

A 5-year retrospective study of 530 motor vehicle fatalities revealed 105 aortic injuries occurring in 90 victims. These were reviewed to determine the injury patterns, circumstances, and mechanisms involved. In addition, the survival time, the driver's age and sex, the time of day of the accident, and the blood alcohol level were considered.

The external beveling caused by an entrance gunshot wound to the skull has not been completely explained, but the mechanism is probably a combination of several factors including the angle of shot, twisting force of a rotating bullet, blow-back effect, velocity, shape and size of the bullet, outspread of the kinetic energy from the bullet, and resistance of the skull.

Sadomasochistic sexual behavior can sometimes lead to the death of one of the participants. A case of death by strangulation, occurring during sadomasochistic sexual activity, is presented.

Seat-belt injuries to the left common carotid artery and left internal carotid artery.

Seat-belt injuries to the neck in a traffic accident or any trauma to the neck in other situations can cause tearing of the inner surface of the carotid arteries and lead to the formation of a fresh thrombus, or can cause partial to complete transection of the carotid arteries.
