mPTP is a multi-protein complex that opens in mitochondria during cell death. Cisplatin-induced hearing loss is also known to be caused by mPTP opening. Thus, our study evaluated the protective effect of a novel mPTP inhibitor named DBP-iPT against cisplatin-induced hearing loss.

Background: For the surgical treatment of oral cancer, it is sometimes necessary to expand intraoral access within the oral cavity. The "swing approach" that involves lip splitting of the mandible and temporary mandibular osteotomy and the "visor approach" that does not split the lower lip and mandible are mainly used. This study analyzed postoperative outcomes such as complications, recurrence rate, and survival rate by these two approaches.

The purpose of the study was to which investigate whether dexamethasone, which has anti-inflammatory and immune response suppression roles, could treat noise-induced hearing loss caused by damage to hair cells in the cochlea. The experiment used 8-week-old CBA mice exposed to white noise at an intensity of 110 dB SPL for 2 h, with hearing loss confirmed by the auditory brainstem response test. Dexamethasone was administered by intraperitoneal injection for 5 days, and the therapeutic effect was investigated for 3 weeks.

Aminoglycoside, a medicinal category of antibiotics, are used in treatment of Gram-negative bacterial infections. Although they are the most widely-used antibiotics due to their high efficacy and low cost, several main adverse effects have been reported including nephrotoxicity and ototoxicity. Since drug-induced ototoxicity is one of the major etiological causes of acquired hearing loss, we examined cochlear hair cell damages caused by three aminoglycosides (amikacin, kanamycin, and gentamicin), and investigated protective property of an isoquinoline-type alkaloid, Berberine chloride (BC).

Article Synopsis
  • * Research aims to discover protective or therapeutic agents by focusing on the pathological mechanisms behind these types of hearing loss, particularly concerning mitochondrial reactive oxygen species (ROS) and oxidative stress.
  • * The review explores the potential of antioxidants and other drugs targeting the mitochondrial redox network to prevent or treat hearing loss caused by noise and ototoxic medications.

SPG30 is a newly categorized type of HSP caused by variants in the kinesin family member 1A gene (KIF1A). Advances in next-generation sequencing have resulted in a limited number of studies describing the clinical, electrophysiological, and radiological features of HSP, with variable manifestations. Most known pathogenic KIF1A variants affect the motor domain, although some rare pathogenic variants have been identified that affect the non-motor domain.

Backgound: Hereditary hearing loss is one of the most common genetically heterogeneous defects in human. About 70% of hereditary hearing loss is defined as non-syndromic hearing loss showing loss of hearing ability without any other symptoms. Up to date, the identified genes associated with non-syndromic hearing loss are 128, including 52 genes for DFNA and 76 genes for DFNB.

The cochlea's ability to discriminate sound frequencies is facilitated by a special topography along its longitudinal axis known as tonotopy. Auditory hair cells located at the base of the cochlea respond to high-frequency sounds, whereas hair cells at the apex respond to lower frequencies. Gradual changes in morphological and physiological features along the length of the cochlea determine each region's frequency selectivity, but it remains unclear how tonotopy is established during cochlear development.

This study aimed to perform a path analysis to understand the effects of quality characteristics on perceived usefulness, perceived ease to use, involvement, and acceptance intention of healthcare kiosks in elderly using the extended technology acceptance model. We performed structural equation modeling (SEM) with data from 300 elderly. The following results were obtained.

Purpose: PD-L1 is an immune checkpoint protein that allows cells to evade T-cell-mediated immune responses. Herein, we uncover a tumor-intrinsic mechanism of PD-L1 that is responsible for the progression and aggressiveness of HNC and reveal that the extracts of a brown alga can target the tumor-intrinsic signaling pathway of PD-L1.

Methods: The biological functions of PD-L1 in the proliferation and aggressiveness of HNC cells in vitro were examined by metabolic activity, clonogenic, tumorigenicity, wound healing, migration, and invasion assays.

Among the various methods, Non Thermal Plasma (NTP) has been recently introduced and is being studied to recover the damaged nerve. In the recent years, several studies have suggested that NTP accelerates nerve cell regeneration, but the mechanism remains unknown. This study evaluated the effect of NTP on neuronal proliferation in SH-SY5Y (Human neuroblastoma cells) cells differentiated by retinoic acid (RA) and investigated the mechanism by which NTP promotes cell proliferation.

Coaching is a stressful occupation, with expectations that are physically and psychologically demanding. Coaches are highly susceptible to occupational burnout and presenteeism, which ultimately affects the entire sporting community. In this study, coaching stress was evaluated by surveying taekwondo coaches to analyze the contributions of unique cultural predispositions and workplace conditions (environmental) to coach stress, burnout, and presenteeism.

Programmed cell death ligand 1 (PD-L1) is an immune checkpoint molecule that inhibits immune responses. The physiological and prognostic role of the PD-L1 signaling pathway in the oral maxillofacial region is unclear. This study aimed to investigate the role of PD-L1 in the progression of oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC).

Novel CAR T cells targeting mesothelin (MSLN) expressed on pancreatic cancer cells were developed to overcome the limit of the clinical efficacy of CAR T cell therapy for pancreatic cancer patients. Optimal single-chain variable fragments (scFv) binding to MSLN were selected based on the binding activity and the functional effectiveness of various scFv containing CAR-expressing T cells. Engineered MSLN CAR T cells showed successful anti-tumor activity specific to MSLN expression level.

Background: Cisplatin (CP) is an effective anticancer drug broadly used for various types of cancers, but it has shown ototoxicity that results from oxidative stress. Berberine has been reported for its anti-oxidative stress suggesting its therapeutic potential for many diseases such as colitis, diabetes, and vascular dementia.

Objective: Organ of Corti of postnatal day 3 mouse cochlear explants were used to compare hair cells after the treatment with cisplatin alone or with berberine chloride (BC) followed by CP.

Methods: This randomized, controlled, double-blind study included 75 patients who underwent lower limb surgery using a tourniquet. The patients were administered lidocaine (1.

Drug-induced hearing loss is a major type of acquired sensorineural hearing loss. Cisplatin and aminoglycoside antibiotics have been known to cause ototoxicity, and excessive accumulation of intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) are suggested as the common major pathology of cisplatin- and aminoglycoside antibiotics-induced ototoxicity. Fursultiamine, also called thiamine tetrahydrofurfuryl disulfide, is a thiamine disulfide derivative that may have antioxidant effects.

Melatonin receptors can inhibit breast and prostate cancers; however, little is known regarding their effects on oral squamous cell carcinoma. In this study, we collected specimens from 81 patients with oral squamous cell carcinoma and analysed clinicopathological data retrospectively. In addition, the expression of the melatonin receptor was analysed immunohistochemically.

Preoperative patient analysis for oral cancer involves multiple considerations that are based on multiple factors; these include TNM stages, histopathologic findings, and adjacent anatomical structures. Once the decision is made to excise the lesion, the margin of dissection and its extent should be considered along with the best form of reconstruction and airway management. Treatment methods include surgical resection, radiotherapy, and chemotherapy.
