The relative configuration of the epoxide functionality in pinofuranoxin A (1), α-alkylidene-β-hydroxy-γ-methyl-γ-butyrolactone with trans-epoxy side chain isolated by Evidente et al. in 2021, was revised by DFT-based spectral reinvestigations and stereo-controlled synthesis. The present investigation demonstrates the difficulty of the configurational elucidation of the stereogenic centers on the conformationally flexible acyclic side-chains.

Article Synopsis
  • Foreign body granulomas (FBGs) can develop from chronic inflammation due to leftover foreign materials, with intraperitoneal foreign body granulomas (IPFBGs) commonly arising from surgical materials but rarely from food residue.
  • The case involves a 74-year-old male who experienced anastomotic leakage after rectal cancer surgery, leading to difficulty distinguishing his IPFBG caused by food from peritoneal dissemination identified through imaging.
  • The findings suggest that food residue can indeed trigger IPFBG, highlighting the importance of considering this condition in treatment decisions for peritoneal nodules.

Surface plasmon resonance (SPR) is widely used for antigen-antibody interaction kinetics analysis. However, it has not been used in the screening phase because of the low throughput of measurement and analysis. Herein, we proposed a high-throughput SPR analysis system named "BreviA" using the Brevibacillus expression system.

Antigorite serpentinite is expected to occur in parts of subduction plate boundaries, and may suppress earthquake slip, but the dominant deformation mechanisms and resultant rheology of antigorite are unclear. An exhumed plate boundary shear zone exposed near Nagasaki, Japan, contains antigorite deformed at 474°C ± 30°C. Observations indicate that a foliation defined by (001) crystal facets developed during plate-boundary shear.

In this study, we focus principally on Taiwan's traditional markets, as food safety issues in those markets have been increasing recently. Thus, this poses pressures and challenges in traditional markets in terms of attracting consumers. This research aims to investigate whether there is consumer demand for more quality improvement from butchers and additional product information in Taiwan's traditional markets by surveying consumers' willingness to pay (WTP).

The rheology of the metamorphosed oceanic crust may be a critical control on megathrust strength and deformation style. However, little is known about the strength and deformation style of metamorphosed basalt. Exhumed megathrust shear zones exposed on Kyushu, SW Japan, contain hydrous metabasalts deformed at temperatures between ~300° and ~500°C, spanning the inferred temperature-controlled seismic-aseismic transition.

Aminoglycosides are widely used antibiotics that bind to the bacterial 30S ribosomal subunit to inhibit translation. Owing to their adverse side effects and narrow therapeutic index, monitoring blood levels of aminoglycosides is important to maximize their effectiveness and minimize their toxicity. Current monitoring techniques require a well-equipped diagnostic laboratory.

Increased concentrations of atmospheric CO2 are predicted to reduce the content of essential elements such as protein, zinc, and iron in C3 grains and legumes, threatening the nutrition of billions of people in the next 50 years. However, this prediction has mostly been limited to grain crops, and moreover, we have little information about either the underlying mechanism or an effective intervention to mitigate these reductions. Here, we present a broader picture of the reductions in elemental content among crops grown under elevated CO2 concentration.

Asymmetric fluorination of cyclic tetrasubstituted alkenes with a pendant amide group was investigated under dianionic phase-transfer catalysis. Fluorination proceeded with high face selectivity, affording the corresponding allylic fluorides with a chiral tetrasubstituted carbon center with up to 97% enantiomeric excess (ee). It should be noted that deprotonative fluorination occurred mainly in preference to intramolecular nucleophilic attack of the amide group.

Sulfonamide residue in foodstuffs and the environment is a serious global concern for their contribution to the occurrence of antibiotic-resistant bacteria, especially in developing countries. Here, we describe a novel, simple, and low-cost bioassay for sulfonamides, which has high potential versatility for use in low-resource settings. The bioassay method is based on a purpose-built luminescent assay reaction that detects sulfonamide groups.

Little is known about the genetic basis of leaf and canopy photosynthesis. Here we aimed to detect novel quantitative trait loci (QTL) controlling photosynthesis by increasing leaf nitrogen content (LNC) per leaf area and analysed its effect on leaf and canopy photosynthesis. To identify QTL that increase photosynthetic rate in leaves, we screened chromosome segment substitution lines (CSSLs) of Oryza sativa ssp.

Due to the presence of antibiotics in environmental water and their potential influence on the occurrence of antibiotic-resistant bacteria, development of a detection method suitable for the screening of environmental water for antibiotics is required. In this study, we developed a simple colorimetric paper-based biosensor based on a novel principle for the detection of antibiotics inhibiting bacterial protein synthesis, including aminoglycosides, tetracycline, chloramphenicol, and macrolides. This biosensor is based on the detection of a color change induced by β-galactosidase, which is synthesized on freeze-dried paper discs containing an in vitro transcription/translation system.

Large coseismic slip was thought to be unlikely to occur on the shallow portions of plate-boundary thrusts, but the 11 March 2011 Tohoku-Oki earthquake [moment magnitude (Mw) = 9.0] produced huge displacements of ~50 meters near the Japan Trench with a resultant devastating tsunami. To investigate the mechanisms of the very large fault movements, we conducted high-velocity (1.

The mechanics of great subduction earthquakes are influenced by the frictional properties, structure, and composition of the plate-boundary fault. We present observations of the structure and composition of the shallow source fault of the 2011 Tohoku-Oki earthquake and tsunami from boreholes drilled by the Integrated Ocean Drilling Program Expedition 343 and 343T. Logging-while-drilling and core-sample observations show a single major plate-boundary fault accommodated the large slip of the Tohoku-Oki earthquake rupture, as well as nearly all the cumulative interplate motion at the drill site.

This paper describes the preparation of iron oxide nanoparticles, surface of which was coated with extremely high immobilization stability and relatively higher density of poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG), which are referred to as PEG protected iron oxide nanoparticles (PEG-PIONs). The PEG-PIONs were obtained through alkali coprecipitation of iron salts in the presence of the PEG-poly(4-vinylbenzylphosphonate) block copolymer (PEG-b-PVBP). In this system, PEG-b-PVBP served as a surface coating that was bound to the iron oxide surface via multipoint anchoring of the phosphonate groups in the PVBP segment of PEG-b-PVBP.

Background: Genotype analysis using multiple single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) is a useful but labor-intensive or high-cost procedure in plant research. Here we describe an alternative genotyping method that is suited to multi-sample or multi-locus SNP genotyping and does not require electrophoresis or specialized equipment.

Results: We have developed a simple method for multi-sample or multi-locus SNP genotyping using allele-specific primers (ASP).
