Purpose: The pivotal trials for stroke prevention in non-valvular atrial fibrillation (NVAF) compared rivaroxaban, dabigatran, and apixaban with warfarin, as did most claims-based studies. Comparisons with phenprocoumon, the most frequently used vitamin K antagonist (VKA) in Germany, are scarce.

Methods: Risk of bleeding, ischemic stroke, and all-cause mortality in patients with NVAF were analyzed using data for 2010 to 2014 from a large German claims database.

Background: Until AMNOG came into effect Germany had free pricing of new drugs. Our exemplary work investigates the costs of new drugs that were licensed in the two years prior to AMNOG, and compares them to the costs of standard treatment that has been used in pivotal trials. Background: Treatment of depression in palliative care must take into account expected benefits and risks of antidepressants in patients with potentially limited life expectancy, poor medical condition, advanced age and higher risk to suffer from side effects and drug interactions. This systematic review assesses evidence of the efficacy and safety of different classes of antidepressants depending on the type and severity of the physical illness.

Methods: A systematic database search (Medline, EMBASE) for clinical studies was carried out and references of identified literature were checked.

Background: Drug approval is based on three criteria: quality, efficacy, and safety. We investigated the types of study design and statistical methods employed to demonstrate safety and efficacy of proprietary medicinal products (PMPs) that were approved for use in the European Union through the centralized procedure.

Methods: We retrospectively analyzed the European Public Assessment Reports of PMPs that the European Medicinal Agency approved, either initially or for extended indications, in 2009 and 2010.

The ICD classification does not provide the opportunity to adequately identify pain patients. Therefore we developed an alternative method for the identification and classification of pain patients which is based on prescription and diagnoses data from the year 2006 of one nationwide sickness fund (DAK) and which is led by two main assumptions: 1. Beneficiaries without prescription of an analgetic drug but with a diagnosis pattern that is characteristic of patients who are treated with opioids are also likely to be pain patients.

Empirical data are lacking that answer the question of how sexual murderers detained in forensic mental hospitals can be differentiated from those sentenced to prison. Psychiatric court reports and national criminal records on sexual murderers detained in a forensic mental hospital (n=45) were compared with those of prisoners (n=89) regarding diagnostic, criminologic, and prognostic characteristics and criminal recidivism rates after detention. Sexual murderers detained in forensic mental hospitals were characterized by higher psychiatric morbidity and slightly higher risk of future sexual and nonsexual violence.
