Impact of long-range transport on black carbon source contribution and optical aerosol properties in two urban environments.

Urban areas, as major sources of aerosol black carbon emissions, contribute to increased pollution levels in surrounding regions by air mass long-range transport, which should be taken into account in implementation of emission-reduction strategies. Properties of light-absorbing aerosol particles and a novel approach to assess the impact of long-range transport on black carbon (BC) pollution in two under-investigated urban environments: Warsaw (Poland, Central Europe) and Vilnius (Lithuania, North-Eastern Europe) are presented. During the warm season of May-August 2022, BC mass concentration and aerosol optical properties: the scattering Ångström exponent (SAE), absorption Ångström exponent (AAE), and single scattering albedo (SSA) were investigated.

Erythemal UV radiation across Nigeria: where do we stand?

The deleterious effects of solar ultraviolet (UV) radiation on humans are of public health concern which demands constant global monitoring and intervention. This study analysed the latitudinal variations in mean daily and multi-year erythemal ultraviolet radiation (EUVR) across 7 states in Nigeria using satellite data from the Total Ozone Mapping Spectrophotometer (TOMS) and Ozone Mapping Instrument (OMI). The latitudes studied were 13° N, 8° N, 6° N and 4° N respectively, using 37 years of data obtained from phases: 1979-1988, 1989-1998, 1999-2008 and 2009-2020.

Schizencephaly: A case report and review of literature.

Schizencephaly is a congenital condition characterized by cerebrospinal fluid-filled clefts that extend from the pia surface of the cerebral hemisphere to the ependymal surface of the ventricle. Magnetic resonance imaging is the modality of choice for its diagnosis. Very few cases have been described in the literature in this environment.

Computerized tomographic pattern of stroke seen in University of Portharcourt Teaching Hospital.

Background: Data on Computed tomographic (CT) pattern of stroke abound in literature but they are predominantly from studies done in the Western world. Though most of the reports agree that ischaemic rather than haemorrhagic stroke is prevalent in most climes,no strictly radiology based study can be quoted in the Port Harcourt area. Thus there is the need for accurate data on stroke pattern in Nigerians of the South-South region.

Ruptured ectopic pregnancy: the long and tortuous journey to the theatre.

Ectopic pregnancy is a common gynaecological emergency in Nigeria, West Africa. Here we present a case that brings to light some of the problems facing the health sector in reducing the high maternal mortality rate.

Sonographic evaluation of the splenic length in normal pregnancy in a tertiary hospital in southern Nigeria: a pilot study.

Background: The spleen is affected by the changes that occur in pregnancy. Ultrasound is the commonest imaging modality used in the evaluation of the abdominal organs in pregnancy; however, there is a paucity of information on the sonographic measurement of the splenic length in normal pregnancy in our environment.

Aim: To establish sonographically the range of splenic length in normal pregnant women.
