Invasive biliary tract carcinomas are usually tubular adenocaricnomas with abundant desmoplastic reactions and frequent ductal and periductal invasion at the time of the diagnosis. Recently, several intraductal neoplasms of the bile duct, particularly at a pre-invasive stage, have been recognized. They include intraductal papillary neoplasm of the bile duct (IPNB), biliary intraepithelial neoplasm (BilIN), and others, such as intraductal tubulopapillary neoplasm (ITPN) of the bile duct.

Methods: This retrospective study reviewed the records of 375 patients. The optimal cut-off value of the PNI was established according to the TNM stage, and overall survival was compared between the low and high PNI groups.
Background: Liver metastases (LMs) are sometimes diagnosed intraoperatively, even when multidetector-row computed tomography (MDCT) reveals no LM in the staging of pancreatic cancer (PC). Gadolinium ethoxybenzyl diethylenetriamine pentaacetic acid-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (EOB-MR imaging) may have a role to play in the detection of LM.
Methods: The present study included a total of 201 patients who underwent an EOB-MR imaging examination before undergoing surgical resection for pancreatic cancer that was determined to be radiologically-resectable by MDCT.
Background: It is difficult to identify patients at high risk of recurrence after pancreatectomy for pancreatic neuroendocrine tumor (PNET) using only the grading classification, especially the G2 category, which includes both benign and low- and high-grade malignant tumors.
Methods: Forty-one patients with PNET who underwent pancreatectomy were enrolled in this study. We defined the computed tomography (CT) ratio as the CT value of the tumor divided by that of non-tumorous pancreatic parenchyma using the late arterial phase dynamic CT.
Background: In type 1 multiple endocrine neoplasia (MEN1), esophageal diseases association with excessive gastrin secretion in Zollinger-Ellison syndrome (ZES) sometimes develop. Here, we reported a case of MEN1/ZES, who developed dysphagia due to reflux esophagitis with severe esophageal stricture. Treatment for his esophageal stricture and ZES was discussed.

We report the findings of a phase II trial, designed to evaluate the impact of the intra-abdominal use of absorbable sutures on the incidence of SSI.
Methods: At 19 Japanese hospitals, 1147 patients undergoing elective gastrectomy, colorectal surgery, hepatectomy, or pancreaticoduodenectomy (PD) were randomly assigned to absorbable or silk intra-abdominal suture groups.
Total pancreatectomy has occasionally been performed to treat patients with multiple lesions (such as intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasm (IPMN)) or patients who have undergone repeated pancreatic resection. However, deficiencies of the exocrine and endocrine functions worsen patients' quality of life. Recently, there have been several case reports citing middle segment-preserving pancreatectomy (MSPP) as a safe procedure and beneficial with respect to preservation of the exocrine and endocrine functions.

Current case with multicentric pancreatic carcinomas showing indefinite clinical images was successfully diagnosed by a biopsy of a novel object expelled from the papilla.
Case Presentation: A 71-year-old male was referred because of elevated serum pancreatic enzymes.
Nodular-sclerosing cholangiocarcinoma (NS-CCA) is a common CCA of the intrahepatic large, perihilar, and distal bile ducts. Intraepithelial biliary neoplasms, such as the mucosal extension of carcinoma and preinvasive neoplastic lesions (ie, biliary intraepithelial neoplasia) reportedly occur in the bile ducts around CCA. In the present study, we collectively refer to these intraepithelial lesions as "intraepithelial neoplasms of the bile duct (IENBs)".

Methods: Patients who underwent resection for stage II, III or IV gallbladder cancer were enrolled. The surgical outcomes of patients who underwent major hepatectomy were compared with those of patients treated with minor hepatectomy and those with unresectable gallbladder cancer.
Background: Pancreas-sparing total duodenectomy (PSTD) is an ideal recommended procedure for patients with multiple duodenal adenomas or early duodenal cancer. We herein report a rare but serious complication of PSTD.
Case Presentation: A 20-year-old woman with duodenal adenocarcinoma underwent PSTD.
Cyanobacterial mutants defective in acyl-acyl carrier protein synthetase (Aas) secrete free fatty acids (FFAs) into the external medium and hence have been used for the studies aimed at photosynthetic production of biofuels. While the wild-type strain of Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803 is highly sensitive to exogenously added linolenic acid, mutants defective in the aas gene are known to be resistant to the externally provided fatty acid.

Methods: This retrospective study enrolled 177 patients who had undergone liver resection as an initial treatment for HCC.
Purpose: In cases of carcinoma in the remnant stomach (CRS), the lymphatic flow may be altered by the initial surgery. In this study of CRS after gastrectomy, we investigated how the regions of lymph node metastasis and changes in lymphatic flow depend on initial disease status.
Method: The study included 76 patients with CRS who underwent gastrectomy between September 2002 and November 2014.
The complete genome sequence of the endophytic diazotroph Kosakonia sacchari, isolated from a sweet potato, was analyzed. The 4,902,106-bp genome with 53.7% G+C content comprises 4,638 open reading frames, including nif genes, 84 tRNAs, and seven complete rRNAs in a circular chromosome.

In the present study, we focused on 6 patients with germline D49H mutation located in the transactivation domain 2 of p53 protein, since the mutation seemed to be prevalent in cancer patients and to be pathogenic. According to the initial survey for family history of the proband with the germline TP53 D49H mutation, one osteosarcoma patient and his pedigree fulfill the criteria for Li-Fraumeni-like syndrome and the 2009 Chompret criteria for germline TP53 mutation screening.

Methods: A total of 16 patients underwent DP with celiac axis resection, while 76 underwent standard DP for pancreatic body/tail cancer. The indications for DP with celiac axis resection included: (a) tumor invasion of either the celiac axis or common hepatic artery or both [CA/CHA (+)] and (b) tumor invasion of the root of the splenic artery, which is difficult to dissect without securing an adequate surgical margin [CA/CHA (-)].
The recurrence rates of Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) are high, necessitating novel and effective adjuvant therapies. Therefore, we conducted a phase II study of glypican-3 (GPC3) peptide vaccine as an adjuvant therapy for HCC patients. Forty-one patients with initial HCC who had undergone surgery or radiofrequency ablation (RFA) were analyzed in this phase II, open-label, single-arm trial.
