Backgrounds: Currently, there is a lack of evidence of prehabilitation during neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NAC) to prevent pneumonia of older patients. This study aimed to investigate the association of preoperative physical fitness after NAC with post-esophagectomy pneumonia in older patients with locally advanced esophageal cancer (LAEC).

Methods: This single-center exploratory prospective cohort study included 80 patients aged ≥ 65 years with LAEC scheduled for curative esophagectomy after NAC between 2021 and 2023.

Impact of nutritional status in patients with metastatic spinal tumors who underwent palliative surgery.

Background: Preoperative nutritional status significantly affects postoperative outcomes in patients with metastatic spinal tumors. Understanding the relationship between nutritional status and survival rates can help optimize treatment strategies and improve patient outcomes.

Methods: This retrospective study was performed on 57 patients who underwent palliative surgery between May 2009 and April 2023.

Two new -cresol-2,6-bis(amide-tether-dpa) ligands (HL, X = MeO and Cl) and their dicopper complexes [Cu(μ-1,1-OAc)(μ-1,3-OAc)(L)]Y (Y = PF , OAc ) and [Cu(μ-1,3-OAc)(L)]Y (Y = ClO , OAc ) were synthesized. The electronic and hydrophobic effects of the MeO and Cl groups were examined compared with nonsubstituted complex [Cu(μ-1,1-OAc)(μ-1,3-OAc)(L)] (). The electronic effects were found in crystal structures, spectroscopic characterization, and redox potentials of these complexes.

Utility of a Navigated High-Speed Drill in Robotic-Assisted Screw Placement for Spine Surgery.

Purpose To elucidate the utility of a navigated high-speed drill used after the version upgrade in surgeries assisted by a spinal robotics system. Methods The subjects were 166 patients who underwent screw placement using a spinal robotics system between April 2021 to July 2023. A significant change during the study was the introduction of a navigated high-speed drill in 80 post-upgrade cases, aimed at improving drilling accuracy.

Comparison of Radiographic and Patient-Reported Outcomes After Surgery in Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis Between Robotics and Navigation: An Analysis Using Propensity Score Matching.

Purpose This study aimed to compare the radiographic and patient-reported outcomes after surgery in adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) between robotics and navigation using propensity score matching. Methods This retrospective study involved 50 patients undergoing posterior spinal fusion for AIS between October 2016 and August 2022, utilizing navigation or robotic systems, analyzing them using propensity score matching. The evaluations included assessments using X-ray, Scoliosis Research Society 22-Item (SRS-22) Questionnaire, and CT, considering variables such as age, gender, BMI, and Lenke type.

Roles of DNA Target in Cancer Cell-Selective Cytotoxicity by Dicopper Complexes with DNA Target/Ligand Conjugates.

DNA binding, DNA cleavage, cellular uptake, and cytotoxicity of [Cu(μ-OH)(L)](ClO) () are examined and compared with those of [Cu(μ-OH)(L)](ClO) () to clarify roles of DNA targets. Long-term changes in bone mineral density following adolescent idiopathic scoliosis surgery: a minimum 34-year follow-up.

Purpose: To investigate longitudinal changes in bone mineral density (BMD) in middle-aged female patients who underwent spinal fusion for adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS).

Methods: The study subjects were 229 female patients who were diagnosed with AIS and underwent spinal fusion between 1968 and 1988. A two-step survey study was conducted on 19 female AIS patients.

Priority of the basic and instrumental activities of daily living in older patients with cancer prescribed rehabilitation: a cross-sectional survey.

Background: There is no information on whether vulnerable older patients with cancer consider basic activities of daily living (BADL) and instrumental activities of daily living (IADL) important outcomes. Our survey aimed to investigate the priority of BADL and IADL in outcomes among vulnerable older patients with cancer.

Methods: This was a single-center survey in a Japanese cancer center.

Prophylactic low-molecular-weight heparin in women with thrombophilia undergoing in vitro fertilization.

Objective: To verify whether low-molecular-weight heparin (LMWH) could increase pregnancy rates and/or decrease abortion rates in women with thrombophilia undergoing assisted reproduction cycles.

Methods: Cross-sectional study with patients undergoing in vitro fertilization (IVF) (N = 104). Women without thrombophilia (control group, n = 20), women with thrombophilia who did not receive LMWH (untreated group, n = 30), and women with thrombophilia, treated with daily enoxaparin from the day of embryo transfer until week 36 of gestation (treated group, n = 54).

Background: The sensitizations to various fungal allergens influence to exacerbation of bronchial asthma. Aspergillus (Asp) and Alternaria (Alt) were one of important fungal allergens for asthma.

Aim And Methods: To investigate the influence of sensitization to Asp or Alt in adult asthmatics managed via our asthma coordinated-care system, we recruited 119 patients (91 women) who were measured IgE for Asp (IgE-Asp) and IgE for Alt (IgE-Alt) at three times during two years,Results: In 119 patients, we detected positive IgE for Asp (IgE-Asp(+)) in 19 patients and positive IgE for Alt (IgE-Alt(+)) in 11 patients.

Background Preoperative and postoperative nutritional statuses are reported to influence the outcomes and complications of multidisciplinary treatment, including patient survival. However, a causal relationship between nutritional status and survival following spinal surgery has not been demonstrated in patients with metastatic spinal tumors. The present study was, therefore, designed to evaluate the correlation between the nutritional status and survival following spinal surgery in patients with metastatic spinal tumors.

Learning curves for robotic-assisted spine surgery: an analysis of the time taken for screw insertion, robot setting, registration, and fluoroscopy.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to clarify the learning curve for robotic-assisted spine surgery. We analyzed the workflow in robotic-assisted spine surgery and investigated how much experience is required to become proficient in robotic-assisted spine surgery.

Methods: The data were obtained from consecutive 125 patients who underwent robotic-assisted screw placement soon after introducing a spine robotic system at a single center from April 2021 to January 2023.

Background: The present study aimed to evaluate the safety of robot-assisted screw placement in 125 cases after introducing a spinal robotics system and to identify the situations where deviation was likely to occur.

Methods: The subjects were 125 consecutive patients who underwent robotic-assisted screw placement using a spinal robotics system (Mazor X Stealth Edition, Medtronic) from April 2021 to January 2023. The 1048 screws placed with robotic assistance were evaluated.

Skeletal muscle mass recovery after oesophagectomy and neoadjuvant chemotherapy in oesophageal cancer: retrospective cohort study.

Objective: Skeletal muscle mass (SMM) is an important biomarker for prognosis and health in older patients with cancer. Limited information is available on the recovery course of SMM after oesophagectomy following neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NAC) in older patients. This study was performed to investigate the recovery course of SMM after oesophagectomy following NAC and the preoperative predictors of delayed recovery in older patients with locally advanced oesophageal cancer (LAEC).

Case report: Electrocardiographic changes in pembrolizumab-induced fatal myocarditis.

Immune checkpoint inhibitor (ICI)-induced myocarditis is rare but fatal. Because of the rapid course of ICI-induced myocarditis, understanding of clinical course is only possible through information from case reports. We report a case of pembrolizumab-induced myocarditis in which we were able to document the course of electrocardiographic changes from onset to death.

Impact of the COVID-19 Pandemic on Middle-Aged and Older Patients With Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis Who Underwent Spinal Fusion: A Questionnaire-Based Survey.

Purpose To investigate the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on middle-aged and older patients with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) who underwent spinal fusion. Methods The subjects were 252 AIS patients who underwent spinal fusion between 1968 and 1988. The surveys were performed before the COVID-19 pandemic (a primary survey in 2014) and during the pandemic (a secondary survey in 2022).

Is the length of time between endometrial scratching and embryo transfer important for pregnancy success? An observational study.

Objective: This study sought to evaluate the influence of time (early <90 days and late >90 days) and endometrial injury on pregnancy success.

Methods: This is a retrospective study in which all infertile women who underwent at least one in vitro fertilization cycle at Clinica Gera between 2010 and 2015 were considered for inclusion. We included patients with a normal ovarian reserve and regular menses at intervals of up to 30 days.

Objective: The aim was to clarify the health-related quality of life (QOL) of patients who had adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) at a minimum of 40 years after surgery.
