Risk factors for serious postoperative complications following gastrectomy in super-elderly patients ≥85-years-old with gastric cancer: A National Clinical Database study in Japan.

Aim: This study aimed to evaluate the technical safety and feasibility of gastrectomy for super-elderly patients ≥85-y-old with gastric cancer and to clarify the risk factors for serious postoperative complications in these patients.

Methods: Between 2017 and 2020, 10,203 patients who underwent distal gastrectomy (DG) and 2580 patients who underwent total gastrectomy (TG) were reviewed from the Japanese National Clinical Database. All possible preoperative factors were used to explore the risk factors for serious postoperative complications in the super-elderly patients with gastric cancer.

Effects of Institutional Experience on Plan Quality in Stereotactic Radiotherapy Using HyperArc for Brain Metastases.

Background/aim: HyperArc (HA) is an automated planning technique enabling single-isocenter brain stereotactic radiotherapy (SRT); however, dosimetric outcomes may be influenced by the planner's expertise. This study aimed to assess the impact of institutional experience on the plan quality of HA-SRT for both single and multiple brain metastases.

Materials And Methods: Twenty patients who underwent HA-SRT for single metastasis between 2020 and 2021 comprised the earlier group, while those treated between 2022 and 2024 constituted the later group.

Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) afflicts humans, cats, pigs, and rhesus macaques. Disease sequelae include congestive heart failure, thromboembolism, and sudden cardiac death (SCD). Sarcomeric mutations explain some human and cat cases, however, the molecular basis in rhesus macaques remains unknown.

Potential role of electroencephalographic monitoring for diagnosis and treatment of local anesthetic systemic toxicity during general anesthesia: a case report.

Background: Local anesthetic systemic toxicity (LAST) is a rare but potentially life-threatening complication. Under general anesthesia, neurological signs are often masked, delaying diagnosis and increasing the risk of sudden cardiovascular collapse. Therefore, early detection methods are critically needed.

Primary classical seminoma of the testis with rhabdoid differentiation.

Rhabdoid differentiation is an indicator of poor prognosis that is often seen in renal cell carcinoma; however, it is also rarely seen in non-renal tumours. Therefore, pathologists should carefully review this finding and report. This report describes the first case of a seminoma of testicular origin that developed rhabdoid differentiation.

Development of an infiltration-based RNA preservation method for cryogen-free storage of leaves for gene expression analyses in field-grown plants.

Background: Gene expression is a fundamental process for plants to express their phenotype, and its analysis is the basis of molecular studies. However, the instability of RNA often poses an obstacle to analyzing plants grown in fields or remote locations where the availability of liquid nitrogen or dry ice is limited. To deepen our understanding of plant phenotypes and tolerance to field-specific stresses, it is crucial to develop methodologies to maintain plant RNA intact and safely transfer it for downstream analyses such as qPCR and RNA-seq.

Validating knowledge-based volumetric modulated arc therapy plans with a multi-institution model (broad model) using a complete open-loop dataset for prostate cancer.

This study examined the characteristics of the broad model (KBP) through a complete open-loop evaluation of volumetric modulated arc therapy (VMAT) plans for prostate cancer in 30 patients at two institutions. KBP, trained using 561 prostate cancer VMAT plans from five institutions with different treatment protocols, was shared with two institutions. The institutions were not involved in the creation of KBP.

Laparoscopic surgery for left ovarian hemorrhage in a patient with an implantable left ventricular assist device on antithrombotic therapy and a history of right salpingo-oophorectomy open surgery for right ovarian bleeding: A case report.

Ovarian hemorrhage during antithrombotic therapy is sometimes difficult to manage. A 38-year-old woman, diagnosed with Marfan syndrome and implanted with a left ventricular assist device (LVAD) and taking aspirin and warfarin potassium, had a history of right adnexal oophorectomy via open surgery for a right ovarian hemorrhage at the age of 35 years. Thereafer, she had been treated with dienogest to suppress ovulation as much as possible.

Perihilar Cholangiocarcinoma Originating in Peribiliary Glands: Insights from a Case without Precancerous Lesions.

BACKGROUND Recent studies have shown that peribiliary glands may be the potential cell origin of cholangiocarcinoma, and that precancerous lesions such as biliary intraepithelial neoplasms and intraductal papillary neoplasms of the bile duct may arise from these peribiliary glands. However, whether and how these precancerous lesions progress to cholangiocarcinoma is controversial. CASE REPORT Herein, an autopsy case of perihilar cholangiocarcinoma, exclusively periductal-infiltrating, is reported.

Impact of glucocorticoids on muscle biopsy findings in antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibody-associated vasculitis.

Several studies have examined the utility of quadriceps femoris muscle biopsies for diagnosing antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibody (ANCA)-associated vasculitis (AAV). We aimed to investigate the effects of glucocorticoid therapy on the muscle biopsy findings of patients with AAV. Data from patients with AAV who underwent a biopsy of the bilateral vastus lateralis of the quadriceps femoris at Tokyo Metropolitan Tama Medical Center between January 2015 and December 2023 were retrospectively analyzed.

Adjuvant Chemotherapy versus Concurrent Chemoradiotherapy for Surgically Treated T1b Uterine Cervical Cancer: A Propensity Score Matched Analysis of the JSOG Nationwide Data.

Objective: The aim of this study was to assess the effect of postoperative chemotherapy on the survival of surgically treated patients with T1b uterine cervical cancer.

Methods: Overall, 1687 patients with T1b cervical cancer who received concurrent chemoradiotherapy (CCRT) or chemotherapy as postoperative adjuvant therapy were retrospectively analyzed using the Japan Society of Obstetrics and Gynecology cancer registry program data from 2015 to 2016. After propensity score matching, overall survival (OS) was compared between 643 patients treated with CCRT and 643 patients treated with chemotherapy.

CAR-NK cells derived from cord blood originate mainly from CD56CD7CD34HLA-DRLin NK progenitor cells.

Cord blood (CB)-derived chimeric antigen receptor (CAR)-natural killer (NK) cells targeting CD19 have been shown to be effective against B cell malignancies. While human CD56 NK cells can be expanded , NK cells can also be differentiated from hematopoietic progenitor cells. It is still unclear whether CAR-NK cells originate from mature NK cells or NK progenitor cells in CB.

Sodium polystyrene sulfonate as an additional contributing factor to repeated gastric ulcers among other multiple factors in a patient undergoing hemodialysis: a case report.

Background: Sodium polystyrene sulfonate (SPS) is a cation-exchange resin used to treat hyperkalemia. Although colorectal ulcers are known side effects of long-term SPS use, few studies have reported SPS-associated gastric ulcers. Herein, we report a case of repeated gastric ulcers during SPS administration.

Herein, we examined supramolecular technique in geometrical reinforcement of chiral open-[60]fullerenes by encasing achiral guests such as Ar, CO, and CHCN.

Monitoring and Treatment of Paroxysmal Nocturnal Hemoglobinuria in Patients with Aplastic Anemia in Asia: An Expert Consensus.

Paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria (PNH) clones can be identified in a significant proportion of patients with aplastic anemia (AA). Screening for PNH clones at the time of an AA diagnosis is recommended by national and international guidelines. In this report, an expert panel of physicians discusses current best practices and provides recommendations for managing PNH in patients with AA in the Asia-Pacific region.
