Surface-associated microorganisms in a biofilm are encased in a hydrated extracellular polymeric substance that aids in adherence and survival. Petroleum contamination constitutes a frequent incidence in various petroleum depots in Nigeria. In this study, the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) present in soil and water in communities around Petroleum Products Marketing Company (PPMC) Suleja, Nigeria, were evaluated and degraded using indigenous microorganisms. The samples sites were divided into 7 plots from where samples of water and soil were obtained: one within the PPMC depot, five from communities surrounding the depot, and the control 93,000 km from the depot.
