Retro-orbital granuloma is a rare and devastating component of granulomatosis with polyangiitis (GPA). Current medical treatment protocols are falling short, and outcomes are poor. The aim of the study was to investigate the frequency, clinical features, and treatment outcomes of retro-orbital granuloma in patients with GPA.

Anesthesia Management in Aortic Dissection in Patients Undergoing Kidney Transplant.

Kidney transplant is a last resort to increase the life expectancy and quality of life in patients with renal failure. Aortic dissection is a disease that requires emergency intervention; it is characterized by sudden life-threatening back or abdominal pain. In the case described, constant chest pain that increased with respiration was present on examination of a 28-year-old man (85 kg, 173 cm) who presented at our emergency department complaining of severe back pain.

Albumin-globulin ratio for prediction of long-term mortality in lung adenocarcinoma patients.

Background: Prior studies showed a relationship between serum albumin and the albumin to globulin ratio with different types of cancer. We aimed to evaluate the predictive value of the albumin-globulin ratio (AGR) for survival of patients with lung adenocarcinoma.

Materials And Methods: This retrospective study included 240 lung adenocarcinoma patients.

Adductor longus muscle metastasis of transitional cell carcinoma of the urinary bladder.

Bladder cancer most commonly spreads to the lymph nodes, lungs, bones and adrenal glands. Metastasis of bladder cancer to the skeletal muscle is extremely rare, as is the case in other malignancies. We report a case of a 62-year-old male patient who presented with pain and swelling in the right lower extremity and had difficulty walking, and who was later found to have metastasis in the adductor longus muscle 3 months after the initial diagnosis of transitional cell carcinoma of the urinary bladder.

pASL versus DSC perfusion MRI in lateralizing temporal lobe epilepsy.

Background: Accurate lateralization of the epileptogenic focus in temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) is crucial. Pulsed arterial spin labeling (pASL) has the capability of quantifying local relative cerebral blood flow (rCBF) by measuring the inflow of electromagnetically labeled arterial blood into the target area, and can be used in the presurgical workup of refractory TLE.

Purpose: To evaluate pASL in detecting mesial temporal lobe (mTL) perfusion asymmetry for the lateralization of the epileptogenic focus in patients with refractory TLE and to compare it with dynamic susceptibility contrast enhanced (DSC) magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) technique.

[Correlation between Haller index and echocardiographic and spirometric findings in children with pectus excavatum].

Objectives: In this study, we evaluated the correlation between severity of deformity and cardiopulmonary function with regards to echocardiographic and spirometric findings.

Study Design: Twenty-five children, mean age 13.6 years, presenting with pectus excavatum between August 2012 and May 2013, were included.

Assessment of the effectiveness of interferential current therapy and TENS in the management of carpal tunnel syndrome: a randomized controlled study.

We assessed the effectiveness of interferential current (IFC) and transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) therapies in the management of carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) compared with splint therapy, a standard treatment modality for CTS. This was a prospective, single-blinded, single-center, randomized, three-group parallel intervention study of 3 weeks duration. Efficacy was examined in the third week after the end of treatments.

Four Cases of Chylous Ascites following Robotic Gynecologic Oncological Surgery.

Chylous ascites is an uncommon form of ascites characterized by milky-appearing fluid caused by blocked or disrupted lymph flow through chyle-transporting vessels. The most common causes of chylous ascites are therapeutic interventions and trauma. In this report, we present four cases of chylous ascites following robot-assisted surgery for endometrial staging and the treatment strategies that we used.

Stiff person syndrome (SPS) is a rare condition that causes rigidity in the muscles of the body and extremities, difficulty in walking, episodic spasms and progressive disability. SPS is generally seen together with autoimmune disorders such as diabetes mellitus, thyroiditis, vitiligo and pernicious anaemia. Rarely, it may develop as a paraneoplastic condition.

Are spinal or paraspinal anatomic markers helpful for vertebral numbering and diagnosing lumbosacral transitional vertebrae?

Objective: To evaluate the value of spinal and paraspinal anatomic markers in both the diagnosis of lumbosacral transitional vertebrae (LSTVs) and identification of vertebral levels on lumbar MRI.

Materials And Methods: Lumbar MRI from 1049 adult patients were studied. By comparing with the whole-spine localizer, the diagnostic errors in numbering vertebral segments on lumbar MRI were evaluated.

[Relation between mean platelet volume and subclinical atherosclerosis in patients with metabolic syndrome].

Objectives: Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is associated with increased cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. There is evidence of platelet activation in MetS. Mean platelet volume (MPV), a determinant of platelet activation, is a newly emerging risk factor for atherothrombosis.

Effects of dexmedetomidine and midazolam on motor coordination and analgesia: a comparative analysis.

Objective: We compared the effects of 2 sedative drugs, dexmedetomidine and midazolam, on motor performance and analgesic efficacy in a rat model.

Materials And Methods: Rats were randomly divided into the following 4 groups on the basis of the treatment received. The first group received 83 µg/kg/min midazolam; the second, 1 µg/kg/min dexmedetomidine; the third, 83 µg/kg/min morphine; and the fourth was a control group.

Determination of lowest possible contrast volume in computed tomography pulmonary angiography by using pulmonary transit time.

Purpose: The aim of this study was to assess the effectiveness of the modified test-bolus (mTB) method in computed tomography pulmonary angiography (CTPA).

Materials And Methods: The Institutional Review Board approved this retrospective study. We reviewed 24 patients (nine men, 15 women; age range, 21-88 years) in whom CTPA was performed either by Bolus-Tracking (BT) (n = 12) or mTB (n = 12) methods.

A comparison of the effectiveness of low-, moderate- and high-dose ultrasound therapy applied in the treatment of myofascial pain syndrome.

Objective: This study aimed to compare and evaluate the effects of ultrasound (US) treatment applied at low-, medium- and high-power-pain threshold (HPPT) doses to trigger points in the treatment of myofascial pain syndrome (MPS).

Methods: The study comprised 61 (40 female and 21 male) patients diagnosed with MPS, aged between 18 and 60 years. The patients were randomly allocated to three groups for the US application at different dosages.

In this study, we aimed to investigate the association of the neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) with Global Registry of Acute Coronary Events (GRACE) risk score in patients with ST-segment elevated myocardial infarction (STEMI). We analyzed 101 consecutive patients with STEMI. Patients were divided into 3 groups by use of GRACE risk score.

Sterile osteitis and suppurative arthritis associated with pannus responding to colchicine.

Sterile suppurative arthritis is characterized by neutrophilic infiltration of joints without any causative pathogen. Here, we present a 32-year-old man with refractory osteitis and erosive suppurative oligoarthritis with pannus. Treatments with multiple disease modifying antirheumatic drugs were all unsuccessful.

Evaluation of oxidative stress parameters and metabolic activities of nurses working day and night shifts.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the oxidative stress and metabolic activities of nurses working day and night shifts. Intensive care unit (ICU) (n=70) and ordinary service (OS) nurses (n=70) were enrolled in the study. Just before and the end of the shifts, blood samples were obtained to measure the participants' oxidative stress parameters.

An uncommon cause of anterior knee pain: patellar chondroma.

A 16-year-old boy presented with a patellar mass and anterior knee pain without any trauma. On physical and radiologic assessment, a mass at the superolateral edge of the patella and a hyperintense lesion on T2 sequences of magnetic resonance imaging was detected. Excisional biopsy revealed a chondroma of patella.

Complications of urologic laparoscopic surgery: a center surgeon's experience involving 601 procedures including the learning curve.

When indications for laparoscopy were expanded to include a variety of urologic diseases, this increased the importance of prevention of complications, especially during the surgeons' learning curve period. Therefore, we evaluated the complications of urologic laparoscopic surgery in the course of one surgeon's experience including the learning curve after completing his long-term fellowship program. From December 2004 to August 2010, a total of 601 urologic laparoscopic surgical procedures were performed by a single surgeon who had finished a 9-month fellowship program at an experienced center.

Effects of isoflurane and propofol on hepatic and renal functions and coagulation profile after right hepatectomy in living donors.

We compared postoperative hepatic and renal functions and coagulation profiles in living donors undergoing right hepatectomy under isoflurane (n = 40) versus propofol (n = 40) anesthesia. After induction, anesthesia was maintained with isoflurane/air-O2 (group I) or propofol/air-O2 (group P) in addition to remifentanil and atracurium infusion in both groups. Aspartate aminotransferase, alanine aminotransferase, international normalized ratio (INR), activated partial thromboplastin time (aPTT), albumin, total bilirubin, blood urea nitrogen, creatinine, estimated glomerular filtration rate (GFR), platelet count, and hemoglobin levels were measured in the preoperative period, after end of the operation, and on the first, third, fifth and seventh postoperative days (PODs).
