MicroRNAs are small noncoding RNAs that carry out post-transcriptional regulation of the expression of their target genes. However, their roles in mammalian organogenesis are only beginning to be understood. Here we show that the microRNA-212/132 family (which comprises miR-212 and miR-132) is indispensable during the development of the mammary glands in mice, particularly for the regulation of the outgrowth of the epithelial ducts.

Unusual cause of right ventricular outflow tract compression: mediastinal lipomatosis.

Mediastinal lipomatosis (ML) is a benign condition characterized by the accumulation of mature adipose tissue within the mediastinum. ML is usually associated with Cushing syndrome and obesity. Most patients are asymptomatic, but some have thoracic pain, dyspnea, cough, dysphonia, dysphagia, and supraventricular tachycardia.

Case report: acute pancreatitis caused by postcholecystectomic hemobilia.

Background: Hemobilia is a rare cause of upper GI bleeding and the reasons for the majority of the cases are iatrogenic. It is also one of the rarest vascular complication following laparoscopic cholecystectomy but acute pancreatitis due to postcholecystectomic hemobilia as a late complication of cholecystectomy is not yet described.

Case Presentation: We presented the case of a 32-year-old female, admitted to our emergency surgery clinic with hematemesis, jaundice and abdominal pain who had a history of laparoscopic cholecystectomy 4 months ago.

Cutting-balloon angioplasty in transplant renal artery stenosis as first-line treatment in the early postoperative period.

Percutaneous transluminal angioplasty has been successfully used for the treatment of transplant renal artery stenosis (RAS). Cutting-balloon angioplasty (CBA) is being used as a second option in pressure-resistant stenosis. It is thought that CBA is less traumatic and therefore restenosis occurs less frequently than in conventional angioplasty.

Pushable springcoil embolization of pseudoaneurysms caused by gluteal stab injuries.

Purpose: To retrospectively review the outcomes of 21 patients with stab wounds to the gluteal region who underwent embolization for pseudoaneurysms causing active bleeding.

Materials And Methods: Between 1997 and 2007, 3 superior gluteal artery, 2 inferior gluteal artery and 16 deep femoral artery muscular branch pseudoaneurysms detected by digital subtraction angiography were selectively catheterized with diagnostic catheters with hydrophilic coating and embolized with pushable springcoils. 17 of the 21 pseudoaneurysms were located in a distal end of an artery where outflow vessels could not be depicted.

Background And Purpose: The training to acquire or practicing to perform a skill, which may lead to structural changes in the brain, is called experience-dependent structural plasticity. The main purpose of this cross-sectional study was to investigate the presence of experience-dependent structural plasticity in mathematicians' brains, which may develop after long-term practice of mathematic thinking.

Materials And Methods: Twenty-six volunteer mathematicians, who have been working as academicians, were enrolled in the study.

Hepatic pseudolesion around the falciform ligament: prevalence, aberrant venous supply, and fatty infiltration evaluated by multidetector computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging.

Purpose: The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence and aberrant venous supply (inferior veins of Sappey) of hypoattenuating hepatic pseudolesions seen around the falciform ligament on portal-dominant phase multidetector computed tomography (MDCT) and the frequency of fatty infiltration of these pseudolesions on chemical-shift magnetic resonance imaging.

Materials And Methods: Portal-dominant phase abdominal MDCT examinations of 728 patients were evaluated for the presence of a pseudolesion around the falciform ligament, and those with a presumed pseudolesion underwent chemical-shift magnetic resonance imaging to detect the fatty infiltration. Reconstructed MDCT images were investigated for the presence of an inferior vein of Sappey, and 30 patients without a pseudolesion were evaluated as a control group.

Acute effects of smoking on coronary flow velocity reserve and ventricular diastolic functions.

Although it is well known that chronic effect of smoking on cardiovascular system, relation between coronary vascular reactivity and ventricular functions after acute smoking has not been well understood. The purpose of this study was to assess the relation between coronary flow velocity reserve and ventricular diastolic functions measured by tissue Doppler imaging after acute smoking. We found that coronary flow velocity and diastolic functions of right ventricle were decreased.

Autophagy is a self-degradative process involved both in basal turnover of cellular components and in response to nutrient starvation or organelle damage in a wide range of eukaryotes. During autophagy, portions of the cytoplasm are sequestered by double-membraned vesicles called autophagosomes, and are degraded after fusion with lysosomes for subsequent recycling. In vertebrates, this process acts as a pro-survival or pro-death mechanism in different physiological and pathological conditions, such as neurodegeneration and cancer; however, the roles of autophagy during embryonic development are still largely uncharacterized.

Rare pleural recurrence of typical pulmonary carcinoid tumor 30 years after lobectomy.

A 68-year-old man, who underwent a left lower lobectomy for a typical carcinoid tumor 30 years previously, presented with a 2-year history of left-sided chest pain. A computed tomographic scan, an octreotide scan, and pleural biopsy all showed recurrence of carcinoid tumor in the pleura. He underwent left chest wall resection, and histopathologic examination confirmed the diagnosis of typical carcinoid tumor.

Improvement of endothelial dysfunction with simvastatin in patients with autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease.

Cardiovascular problems are a major cause of morbidity and mortality in patients with autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD). Endothelial dysfunction (ED), which is an early manifestation of vascular injury, has been shown in patients with ADPKD. Statins have a beneficial effect in the reversal of ED.

Changes in endothelial function before and after renal transplantation.

Endothelial dysfunction is an early key event in the development of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease observed in chronic renal failure patients. The role of renal transplantation (RTx) on endothelial dysfunction is still unclear. The aim of this study was to evaluate the endothelial function of chronic renal failure patients before RTx (while they were on hemodialysis, HD), and after RTx (at the 6th and 12th months) by a noninvasive method, brachial arterial ultrasound.

Sialoblastoma: MRI findings.

Sialoblastoma is a rare, aggressive and potentially malignant salivary gland tumour diagnosed in the neonatal period. A total of 28 cases have been reported in the literature, but reports of the imaging findings are limited. We describe a neonate with a right parotid sialoblastoma.

Expression of bcl-2 gene family during resection induced liver regeneration: comparison between hepatectomized and sham groups.

Aim: During liver regeneration cellular proliferation and apoptosis result in tissue remodeling to restore normal hepatic mass and structure. Main regulators of the apoptotic machinery are the Bcl-2 family proteins but their roles are not well defined throughout the liver regeneration. We aimed to analyze the expression levels of bcl-2 gene family members during resection induced liver regeneration.

[Acute appendicitis in pregnancy].
