The construction of functional, synthetic microcompartments is crucial for advancing our understanding of cellular processes and enhancing technological applications across various fields. This study introduces the creation of lipoproteinosomes, which are microscale compartments constructed from bovine serum albumin and stearoyl chloride (BSA-SC) nanoconjugates synthesized by employing thiourea-linkage chemistry. These spherical lipoproteinsomal microcapsules are formed through a water-in-oil Pickering emulsification process and stabilized in aqueous environments by cross-linking.

Introduction: Tau pathology impacts neurodegeneration and cognitive decline in Alzheimer's disease (AD), with the dorsal raphe nucleus (DRN) being among the brain regions showing the earliest tau pathology. As a serotonergic hub, DRN activity is altered by selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), which also have variable effects on cognitive decline and pathology in AD.

Methods: We examined N = 191 subjects with baseline F-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography and plasma biomarker data to study the effects of SSRIs on tau pathology, cognitive decline, and DRN metabolism.

Article Synopsis
  • The study examined the occurrence and factors associated with distal interphalangeal (DIP) joint erosion in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA).
  • Researchers analyzed medical records from 1213 RA patients, finding that 12% had DIP erosions, primarily affecting the third finger and typically presenting unilaterally.
  • Results indicated that older age and longer disease duration were significant predictors of DIP joint erosion, suggesting a potential reevaluation of joint involvement in RA cases, especially in older patients.

Predicting the error in density functional theory (DFT) calculations due to the choice of exchange-correlation (XC) functional is crucial to the success of DFT, but currently, there are limited options to estimate this a priori. This is particularly important for high-throughput screening of new materials. In this work, the structure and elastic properties of binary and ternary oxides are computed using four XC functionals: LDA, PBE-GGA, PBEsol, and vdW-DF with C09 exchange.
