Effect of cooking procedures of kiymali pide, a traditional Turkish fast-food, on destruction of Escherichia coli O157:H7.

The objective of the present study was to obtain data about cooking time and temperature of kiymali pide in the restaurants and to investigate thermal inactivation of E. coli O157:H7 during experimental kiymali pide making. A field study was conducted in randomly selected 23 of 87 pide restaurants.

Low scores on the Benton Facial Recognition Test associated with vertebrobasilar insufficiency.

Background: Decreased posterior cerebral circulation has been observed in patients with vertebrobasilar insufficiency (VBI). Reduced cerebral perfusion may have an impact on mental performance as measured by the Benton Facial Recognition Test (BFRT). We evaluated the usefulness of BFRT in identifying cognitive decline in patients with VBI by correlating test performance with total blood flow in the vertebrobasilar system and other variables such as educational level and gender.

Background: Cerebral venous thrombosis (CVT) is a rare disease and it has different etiologies. Inherited or acquired prothrombotic state plays a key role in the development of CVT.

Methods: A 28-year-old man who presented to our emergency department with persistent headache and accompanied by complaints of nausea and vomiting over a week.

Incremental effects of restless legs syndrome on nocturnal blood pressure in hypertensive patients and normotensive individuals.

Background: Few studies have evaluated the role of restless legs syndrome (RLS) in the development of nondipping 24 h blood pressure (BP) patterning/sleep-time hypertension, which has been shown to be an independent predictor of cardiovascular risk. These were indirect studies that had reported the relation between BP and RLS attacks during polysomnographic investigations in the lab. The aim of the present study was to assess the relationship between RLS, which was diagnosed clinically, and night-time BP patterns in a relatively large young cohort who had not been treated before.

Bioluminescence inhibition assay for the detection of hydroxylated polychlorinated biphenyls.

Hydroxylated polychlorinated biphenyls (OH-PCBs) are an important class of contaminants that mainly originate from polychlorinated biphenyl metabolism. They may conceivably be as dangerous and persistent as the parent compounds; most prominently, OH-PCBs are endocrine disruptors. Due to increasing evidence of the presence of OH-PCBs in the environment and in living organisms, including humans, and of their toxicity, methods of detection for OH-PCBs are needed in the environmental and medical fields.

Do energy drinks cause epileptic seizure and ischemic stroke?

Energy drinks are popular among young individuals and marketed to college students, athletes, and active individuals between the ages of 21 and 35 years. We report a case that had ischemic stroke and epileptic seizure after intake of energy drink with alcohol. To the best of our knowledge, the following case is the first report of ischemic stroke after intake of energy drink.

Role of oxidative stress and Ca²⁺ signaling on molecular pathways of neuropathic pain in diabetes: focus on TRP channels.

Diabetes mellitus, a debilitating chronic disease, affects ~100 million people. Peripheral neuropathy is one of the most common early complications of diabetes in ~66 % of these patients. Altered Ca(2+) handling and Ca(2+) signaling were detected in a huge variety of preparations isolated from animals with experimentally induced type 1 and 2 diabetes as well as patients suffering from the disease.

Management of Brucella endocarditis: results of the Gulhane study.

Brucella endocarditis (BE) is a rare but life-threatening complication of human brucellosis. The aim of this study was to investigate the course of BE along with the therapeutic interrelations. A total of 53 patients with BE hospitalised in 19 health institutions between 2006 and 2011 were included in the Gulhane study.

Tularemia is a zoonotic infection caused by Francisella tularensis. In the recent years tularemia has become a re-emerging infection in Turkey with epidemics and also sporadic cases. Transmission occurs most often through consumption of contaminated water and food, direct contact with animals and insect/ tick bites.

Amlodipine-induced delirium in a patient with ischemic stroke.

Amlodipine is a dihydropyridine calcium antagonist drug with distinctive pharmacokinetic characteristics that seem to be attributable to a high degree of ionization. Delirium is a neuropsychiatric syndrome recognized as a marker for increased health care costs, morbidity, mortality, and institutionalization that often complicates acute physical illness in elderly people. This case is the first report concerning amlodipine use as a cause of delirium.

Migraine prevalence, alexithymia, and post-traumatic stress disorder among medical students in Turkey.

The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence of migraine, alexithymia, and post-traumatic stress disorder among medical students at Cumhuriyet University of Sivas in Turkey. A total of 250 medical students participated in this study and answered the questionnaires. The study was conducted in three stages: the self-questionnaire, the neurological evaluation, and the psychiatric evaluation.

The evaluation of atherosclerosis in migraine patients.

A potential association might exist between atherosclerosis and migraine. Carotid intima-media thickness (CIMT) is a marker of generalized atherosclerosis; hence, we aimed to assess CIMT in migraine patients. This study included 30 patients and 60 healthy controls aged between 20 and 40 years.

Do gastrointestinal and respiratory signs and symptoms correlate with the severity of gastroesophageal reflux?

Background: Gastroesophageal reflux (GER) is a disorder that is common by seen in childhood and may lead to severe complications. In this study, we ascertained the incidence of GER among the children who had typical and atypical complaints of GER and whether there was a difference between two groups comparing the findings of 24-hour pH-meter.

Methods: 39 out of 70 patients with typical and atypical GER symptoms were diagnosed as GER by 24-hour pH-meter monitoring.

Detection of bladder cancer recurrence with real-time three-dimensional ultrasonography-based virtual cystoscopy.

This prospective study evaluated the accuracy of grey-scale two-dimensional (2D) ultrasonography and real-time threedimensional (3D) ultrasonography-based virtual cystoscopy for detecting early recurrence of bladder cancer in previously treated patients (n = 40). Real-time 3D ultrasonography-based virtual cystoscopy images were compared with both 2D ultrasonography and interval conventional cystoscopy pathology results. Ultrasound examinations were performed before routine follow-up with conventional cystoscopy.

Assessment of the requisites of microbiology based infectious disease training under the pressure of consultation needs.

Background: Training of infectious disease (ID) specialists is structured on classical clinical microbiology training in Turkey and ID specialists work as clinical microbiologists at the same time. Hence, this study aimed to determine the clinical skills and knowledge required by clinical microbiologists.

Methods: A cross-sectional study was carried out between June 1, 2010 and September 15, 2010 in 32 ID departments in Turkey.

The relationship between major depression and increased platelet activity has been previously stated by several studies. This study sought to test the relationship between mean platelet volume (MPV)--an indicator of platelet activity--and major depression, in an adult Turkish population sample. Respondents were 2286 participants interviewed in a regional survey.

An unusual presentation of bee sting: subarachnoid hemorrhagia.

A person consists of a variety of immune reactions as a result of bee stings, depending on his/her immunologic structure. A 49-year-old male patient was brought to the emergency department because of generalized tonic clonic seizure and loss of consciousness after an hour of wild bee bite from the anterior abdomen in a rural area. After cardiopulmonary resuscitation, he was admitted to intensive care unit.

Magnetic resonance imaging of rheumatoid meningitis: a case report and literature review.

Rheumatoid meningitis is a rare and serious complication of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) with high mortality rate. Clinical importance of the disease is high because diagnosis is difficult, and the disease is treatable if diagnosed successfully. We present the clinical and cranial magnetic resonance imaging findings of 62-year-old female patient with RA who has been followed up for 4 years.

Forequarter amputation as a life-saving procedure.

Forequarter amputation is performed for high-grade malignant tumours in the proximal part of the upper extremity with palliative or curative intentions. Two cases are included in this report of patients who presented in need of urgent surgical intervention. Both patients had an actively bleeding, ulcerated or fungating mass and were haemodynamically unstable.

The typical symptom of intracranial hypotension syndrome is orthostatic headache. The headache may also be accompanied by neck pain and stiffness, low backache, radicular symptoms, quadriplegia, interscapular pain, nausea/vomiting, and cranial nerve involvement symptoms (hearing and visual problems, face pain and numbness, hypogeusia). Radiologically, on cranial magnetic resonance imaging, intracranial hypotension syndrome is characterized by dural thickening and contrast enhancement, subdural effusion, engorgement of the venous structures, sagging or downward displacement of the brain, and pituitary hyperemia.
