Biomass is a key element in biofuels which can be defined as a fuel produced through contemporary biological processes, and its increased use can support the EU's aims of reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Information on the nature and the quality of the biomass or biofuel is important in order to support the optimization of their combustion with respect to realizing higher efficiencies and lower emissions during energy production. Three reference materials were produced by a collaborative approach among national metrology institutes and designated institutes within the scope of the EMPIR project: BIOFMET.

  • Glioblastomas are aggressive brain tumors that resist treatment and utilize neuron-tumor connections to promote their growth, with cholinergic neurons playing a key role in this invasion.
  • The study utilized rabies viruses for retrograde tracing to reveal how glioblastomas integrate into brain circuits, showing that radiotherapy can enhance neuron-tumor connectivity, complicating treatment efforts.
  • By disrupting neuron-tumor connections, researchers discovered a potential therapeutic approach that could halt glioblastoma progression, emphasizing the need to target these synapses for better treatment outcomes.

  • Gaucher Disease (GD) is a genetic condition caused by a deficiency in the enzyme glucocerebrosidase, and Velaglucerase alfa is used to replace this enzyme through therapy.
  • Novel nanoparticle systems made from Eudragit have been developed to enhance the delivery and effectiveness of Velaglucerase alfa, demonstrating high stability and efficient encapsulation.
  • In laboratory studies, these nanoparticles showed improved interaction with important proteins, better enzyme release in acidic conditions, and increased internalization in GD cells, leading to enhanced enzyme activity without affecting cell viability.

Article Synopsis
  • A study from Istanbul compared psychiatric admission and diagnosis rates in children and adolescents during the first three months of the COVID-19 pandemic with the same periods in the previous year.
  • The results showed significant increases in diagnoses of autism spectrum disorder (ASD), obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), intellectual disability (ID), attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and depression during the pandemic compared to previous periods.
  • The findings indicate a notable rise in pediatric neurodevelopmental disorders, particularly ASD, due to the initial phase of the pandemic.

  • There is a growing demand for seedless grape varieties that are cheaper to produce, disease-resistant, and require fewer pesticides, prompting the use of embryo recovery techniques in grape breeding studies.
  • The research highlights that the choice of grape varieties for cross-breeding and the timing for transferring embryos to the agar medium are critical factors for achieving successful results in embryo rescue.
  • Findings indicate that using the 'Yalova Seedless' variety as a female parent in hybrid combinations led to higher success rates, particularly when sampled at the seventh or eighth week after pollination.

This research aims to assess the concentration of metals in human and canine placentas from the same geographic area and to investigate how these metal levels influence gene expression within the placenta. Placentas of 25 dogs and 60 women who had recently given birth residing in Ankara, Turkey were collected and subjected to metal analysis using ICP-OES. Placentas with detectable metal levels underwent further examination including Next Generation Sequencing, transcriptional analysis, single nucleotide polymorphism investigation, and extensive scrutiny across various groups.

Article Synopsis
  • Glioblastoma is a really serious brain tumor that's hard to treat, but new methods using the immune system are being tested.
  • Doctors often use MRI scans to see how the tumor is doing, but sometimes it's tough because the treatment can change the brain tissue.
  • A new method called magnetic resonance elastography (MRE) might help by checking how soft the tumor is after treatment, which could show whether the therapy is working better than just looking at the tumor size.

Article Synopsis
  • The study looked at harmful chemicals called persistent organic pollutants (POPs) in loggerhead turtles found on the Turkish coast, focusing on differences between male and female turtles.
  • Researchers tested 10 adult turtles (5 males and 5 females) after they passed away, examining different organs to see how much of these chemicals they contained.
  • They found that both male and female turtles had the highest levels of these pollutants in their fat, and the turtles can be used to help track pollution in the environment.

Dysmenorrhea, characterized by pain and related symptoms, significantly impacts women's quality of life in work and education, prompting a comprehensive evaluation of associated factors. The objective of this study was to utilize structural equation modeling (SEM) to analyze and assess the biopsychosocial factors influencing dysmenorrhea among university students. Three hundred and thirty-nine university students were included in this cross-sectional descriptive study.

The placental cholinergic system; known as an important factor in intracellular metabolic activities, regulation of placental vascular tone, placental development, and neurotransmission; can be affected by persistent organic pesticides, particularly organochlorine pesticides(OCPs), which can influence various epigenetic regulations and molecular pathways. Although OCPs are legally prohibited, trace amounts of the persistent dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane(DDT) are still found in the environment, making prenatal exposure inevitable. In this study, the effects of 2,4'-DDT and 4,4'-DDT; and its breakdown product 4,4'-DDE in the environment on placental cholinergic system were evaluated with regards to cholinergic genes.

Background: As the incidence of head and neck cancer continues to rise, the volume of referrals to our urgent suspected cancer clinics continues to rise with it. Cancer referral and review time targets are not being met within the UK, and our centre has experienced an increase in volume of referrals which cannot be met by available clinic slots. We proposed a pathway to the North East London Cancer Alliance to safely triage these patients using the Head and Neck Cancer Risk Calculator version 2 (HaNC-RCv2).

Intrinsic brain tumors, such as gliomas are largely resistant to immunotherapies including immune checkpoint blockade. Adoptive cell therapies (ACT) including chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) or T cell receptor (TCR)-transgenic T cell therapy targeting glioma-associated antigens are an emerging field in glioma immunotherapy. However, imaging techniques for non-invasive monitoring of adoptively transferred T cells homing to the glioma microenvironment are currently lacking.

The superior colliculus (SC), a conserved midbrain node with extensive long-range connectivity throughout the brain, is a key structure for innate behaviors. Descending cortical pathways are increasingly recognized as central control points for SC-mediated behaviors, but how cortico-collicular pathways coordinate SC activity at the cellular level is poorly understood. Moreover, despite the known role of the SC as a multisensory integrator, the involvement of the SC in the somatosensory system is largely unexplored in comparison to its involvement in the visual and auditory systems.
