Background And Aim: Maintenance haemodialysis patients have increased morbidity and mortality which is mainly driven by an elevated inflammation level due to the uraemic milieu. A major part of this increased inflammation level is the degree of oxidative stress which can be assessed by albumin redox state (ARS). Aim of this study was to evaluate how the ARS is affected by a haemodialysis treatment and different dialyzer properties.

Background: Albumin, as the most abundant plasma protein, represents a target structure for both drug and physicochemical therapeutic approaches to eliminate uraemic toxins more efficiently. Potentially, this approach could reduce mortality of haemodialysis patients. However, little is known about albumin functional properties in these patients and its alteration by haemodialysis treatment.

Document search on PubMed, the pre-eminent database for biomedical literature, relies on the annotation of its documents with relevant terms from the Medical Subject Headings ontology (MeSH) for improving recall through query expansion. Patent documents are another important information source, though they are considerably less accessible. One option to expand patent search beyond pure keywords is the inclusion of classification information: Since every patent is assigned at least one class code, it should be possible for these assignments to be automatically used in a similar way as the MeSH annotations in PubMed.

Botrytis cinerea is a phytopathogenic fungus infecting a number of crops (tomatoes, grapes and strawberries), which has been adopted as a model system in molecular phytopathology. B. cinerea uses a wide variety of infection strategies, which are mediated by a set of genes/proteins called pathogenicity/virulence factors.

Case Report: We report the history of a 67-year-old patient who was admitted to hospital because of rapidly progressive renal insufficiency. The renal biopsy revealed granulomatous interstitial nephritis. The diagnosis of systemic sarcoidosis was confirmed by typical findings of bronchoalveolar lavage and of transbronchial, liver and bone marrow biopsy.
