Effect of proximal gastric vagotomy on the activity of hydrogen, potassium-stimulated ATPase in the gastric mucosa of patients with duodenal ulcer.

Objective: To find out if there was a correlation between hydrogen, potassium stimulated ATPase (H,K-ATPase) activity and gastric acid secretion in patients with duodenal ulcers after proximal gastric vagotomy.

Design: Retrospective study.

Setting: Regional referral center.

Recurrent ulceration after proximal gastric vagotomy. Possible role of mucosal barrier.

Between 1971 and 1986 532 proximal gastric vagotomies were carried out at the Pelgulinna Hospital. The five-year recurrence rate was 5.5% (n = 29).

[Prevention of post-vagotomy syndromes in the treatment of duodenal ulcer].

Immediate results in vagotomy in 73 patients with duodenal ulcer have been considered. To assess the functional condition of the organ operated upon the electric activity of the stomach was recorded (EGM). These data allow to judge about its motor-evacuatory functions.

Gastrin, ACTH and STH after pylorus ligation and vagotomy in rats.

Plasma levels of gastrin, adrenocorticotropin (ACTH) and somatotropin (STH) were determined 24 hours after pylorus ligation and after pylorus ligation and vagotomy by radioimmunoassay. Pylorus ligation increases the serum levels of these hormones, while vagotomy inhibits the production of these ones. We conclude that the antiulcerogenetic effect of surgical vagotomy is closely related with the changes in the level of these hormones.
