Effect of incorporation of calcium polyphosphate sub-microparticles in low-concentration bleaching gels on physical properties of dental enamel.

Aim: To evaluate the bleaching efficacy and effects on enamel properties of experimental gels with carbamide peroxide (CP; 10%) or hydrogen peroxide (HP; 6%) containing calcium polyphosphate sub-microparticles (CaPPs).

Methods: A total of 216 bovine tooth specimens were divided for microhardness and color analyses (n = 108) and block randomized into nine groups (n = 12): (G1) commercial CP (Whiteness Perfect, FGM; Brazil); (G2) experimental CP; (G3) CP-0.5%CaPPs; (G4) CP-1.

[Prevalence of common mental disorders in nursing workers at a hospital of Bahia].

This study aimed to describe the prevalence of "suspected" of common mental disorders (CMD) in nursing workers at a general hospital in the state of Bahia. It was carried out a cross-sectional epidemiological study with 309 nursing workers, who worked in welfare activities in a large hospital. The nurses mentioned overwork and low pay.

Efficacy, safety and tolerability of sildenafil in Brazilian hypertensive patients on multiple antihypertensive drugs.

Objective: To evaluate the efficacy, safety and tolerability of sildenafil among Brazilian patients with hypertension treated with combinations of anti-hypertensive drugs.

Materials And Methods: One hundred twenty hypertensive men aged 30 to 81 years old under treatment with 2 or more anti-hypertensive drugs and with erectile dysfunction (ED) lasting for at least 6 months were enrolled at 7 research centers in Brazil. Patients were randomized to receive treatment with either sildenafil or placebo taken 1 hour before sexual intercourse (initial dose of 50 mg, adjusted to 25 mg or 100 mg according to efficacy and toxicity).

Phylogenetic analysis of some Aerococcus-like organisms from clinical sources: description of Helcococcus kunzii gen. nov., sp. nov.

16S rRNA gene sequencing studies were performed on some unusual gram-positive catalase-negative cocci of unknown taxonomic position isolated from human clinical sources. Comparative analysis of the sequence data demonstrated that the clinical isolates represent a hitherto-unknown line of descent within the low-G+C-content gram-positive bacteria. On the basis of the phylogenetic findings and the phenotypic distinctiveness of the organisms, it is proposed that they be classified in a new genus, Helcococcus, as Helcococcus kunzii sp.

Taxonomic studies on a psychrophilic Clostridium from vacuum-packed beef: description of Clostridium estertheticum sp. nov.

Taxonomic studies were performed on an anaerobic Gram-positive, spore-forming, psychrophilic bacterium originally isolated from spoiled vacuum-packed refrigerated beef. Based on the present finding it is proposed that this unknown psychrophilic bacterium be classified as a new species of the genus Clostridium, as Clostridium estertheticum sp. nov.
