Background: C-reactive protein (CRP) represents a routine diagnostic marker of inflammation. Dissociation of native pentameric CRP (pCRP) into the monomeric structure (mCRP) liberates proinflammatory features, presumably contributing to excessive immune cell activation via unknown molecular mechanisms.

Results: In a multi-translational study of systemic inflammation, we found a time- and inflammation-dependent pCRP dissociation into mCRP.

The use of health-relevant bacteria originating from human microbiomes for the control or therapy of diseases, including neurodegenerative disorders or diabetes, is currently gaining increasing importance in medicine. Directed and successful engineering of microbiomes probiotic supplementation requires subtle, precise as well as, more importantly, easy, fast and convenient monitoring of its success, , in patients' gut. Based on a previously described polyclonal SELEX aptamer library evolved against the human gut bacterium , we finally isolated three individual aptamers that proved their performance concerning affinity, specificity and robustness in reliably labeling the target bacterium and in combination with "contaminating" control bacteria.

Dietary polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) are increasingly recognized for their health benefits, whereas a high production of endogenous fatty acids - a process called de novo lipogenesis (DNL) - is closely linked to metabolic diseases. Determinants of PUFA incorporation into complex lipids are insufficiently understood and may influence the onset and progression of metabolic diseases. Here we show that fatty acid synthase (FASN), the key enzyme of DNL, critically determines the use of dietary PUFA in mice and humans.
