Hypertrophic gastric mucosa in transgenic mice overexpressing transforming growth factor (TGF)-alpha showed mucosal cellular hyperplasia with dysplasia, suppression of gastric acid secretion, and chief and parietal cell depletion. In order to clarify the effects of TGF-alpha on the gastric mucosa, we analyzed the stomach of TGF-alpha transgenic mice by mucin histochemical staining and immunohistochemical analysis of TGF-alpha. In transgenic mice, especially those older than 3 months, the fundic gland was notably atrophic but the total mucosa was thickened.

The amount of MT and heavy metals (Zn, Cu) were also assayed by radioimmunoassay and atomic absorption spectrophotometry, respectively. Immunohistochemically, MT was found in the pia mater, ependymal cells, protoplasmic astrocytes nand glial processes neuropil of the gray matter and fibrous astrocytes of the white matter of the telencephalon, whereas oligodendroglia and microglia did not show any positive immunostaining for MT.

The resulting copolyesters are intended as carriers for drug delivery systems. Copolyesters with approximately 85 mol% GA (number-average molecular weight (Mn): 2900 +/- 100) are crystalline and solid and show a parabolic-type in vivo degradation pattern.
