3D printed neural tissues with in situ optical dopamine sensors.

Engineered neural tissues serve as models for studying neurological conditions and drug screening. Besides observing the cellular physiological properties, in situ monitoring of neurochemical concentrations with cellular spatial resolution in such neural tissues can provide additional valuable insights in models of disease and drug efficacy. In this work, we demonstrate the first three-dimensional (3D) tissue cultures with embedded optical dopamine (DA) sensors.

As a model immiscible polymer blend, a HDPE/PP (80/20 wt%) polymer film was used. The blend film was subjected to polarized light microscopy (PLM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and time of flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (ToF-SIMS).

[A stochastic test for validity control of visual acuity statements].

Background: When a patient's statement of reduced visual acuity (VA) does not correspond to the ophthalmologic findings, the validity of the statement should be checked before intensive diagnostics are initiated, because the statement may be untrue or may overstate a factual reduction in VA. A primary question is whether the patient's statement differs from his or her true VA, and if so, by how much. Especially in examinations for medical opinion, individuals may be well informed on how to check the validity of VA statements.
