The oxygen regulator Fnr is part of the regulatory cascade in Bacillus subtilis for the adaptation to anaerobic growth conditions. In vivo complementation experiments revealed the essential role of only three cysteine residues (C227, C230, C235) at the C-terminus of B. subtilis Fnr for the transcriptional activation of the nitrate reductase operon (narGHJI) and nitrite extrusion protein gene (narK) promoters.

Similar to heat-stress transcription factors (HSFs) from non-plant sources, HSFA1 and HSFA2 from tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill) contain two conserved clusters of basic amino acid residues (K/R1 and K/R2) which might serve as nuclear localization signal (NLS) motifs. Mutation of either one of them and functional testing of the corresponding proteins in a transient expression assay using tobacco (Nicotiana plumbaginifolia L:) protoplasts gave the following results. Whereas K/R1, positioned in all HSFs at the C-terminus of the DNA-binding domain, had no influence on nuclear import, the K/R1 mutants were impaired in their interaction with the DNA (band-shift assays).

Article Synopsis
  • A study compared 6% hydroxyethyl starch (HES) and 3% modified fluid gelatin (MFG) as volume replacement solutions in 46 patients undergoing major orthopedic hip surgery.
  • Both solutions maintained stable hemodynamics and similar fluid and colloidal replacement volumes during the surgery, with no significant clinical differences in laboratory variables.
  • The research concluded that both HES and MFG were effective and safe for use, adhering to the accepted maximum daily dosage guidelines in Germany and France.
