Inflammation of the ileum, or ileitis, is commonly caused by Crohn's disease (CD) but can also accompany ulcerative colitis (backwash ileitis), infections or drug-related damage. Oxidative tissue injury triggered by reactive oxygen species (ROS) is considered part of the ileitis etiology. However, not only elevated ROS but also permanently decreased ROS are associated with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD).

A major challenge in agriculture, horticulture and aquaponics practices is the reduction of mineral fertilisers and peat to reduce CO emissions and increase sustainability. This study used a three-phase-natural fertiliser, the Humicacid Fiber-Substrate (HFS), made from natural regenerative organic and mineral-fractions (Humus-Mineral-Complex), to reduce the peat content in plant pots for aquaponics farming. Basil (Ocimum basilicum) growth was compared with i) 100% standard media substrate ("Einheitserde", white peat 80%, clay 20%), and ii) 85% "Einheitserde" and 15% of HFS under irrigation with aquaculture process waters from an extensive and intensive production of African catfish (Clarias gariepinus) under coupled aquaponic conditions.

Article Synopsis
  • Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) involves chronic inflammation in the intestines due to an improper immune response to gut microbes, particularly in genetically predisposed individuals.
  • Reactive oxygen species (ROS), produced by NADPH oxidases (NOX), play crucial roles in gut defense and barrier maintenance, with mutations in NOX linked to IBD and disruptions in the mucus layer being significant in its development.
  • Analysis of the mucin O-glycome in mice with NOX inactivation revealed new glycan structures and variations in glycan composition, indicating that NOX activity influences mucin glycosylation, potentially worsening intestinal dysbiosis and inflammation.

Very Early Onset Inflammatory Bowel Disease (VEO-IBD) is potentially associated with genetic disorders of the intestinal epithelial barrier or inborn errors of immunity (IEI). Dual oxidase 2 (DUOX2), an HO-producing NADPH oxidase expressed at apical enterocyte membranes, plays a crucial role in innate defense response. Biallelic mutations have been described only in two patients with VEO-IBD to date.
