A 24-year-old man with diabetes mellitus presented with advanced kidney disease and severe proteinuria. Genetic testing revealed -MODY12 (OMIM 600509), and a kidney biopsy showed nodular glomerulosclerosis. He commenced dialysis shortly thereafter, and glycemic control improved on treatment with a sulfonylurea.

ALTERNATE is an international observational study evaluating biweekly darbepoetin alfa (DA) in adult dialysis patients in clinical practice. Austrian ALTERNATE results are presented here (n = 505). The follow-up study ALTERNATE follow-up (AFU) followed Austrian ALTERNATE patients for an additional 12 months (n = 135).

The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy and safety of our novel Innsbruck Bioartificial Liver (IBAL; US patent no. 10/641275), which contains aggregates of porcine hepatocytes grown under simulated microgravity, in a porcine model of fulminant hepatic failure (FHF). FHF was induced by a combination of 75-80% liver resection and ischemia of the remnant segments for 60 min in 12 pigs.

Background: Extended hepatectomy is a valid model for the study of acute liver failure. Since the porcine liver is comparable in size, morphology and anatomy to the human liver, we describe a technique employing hepatic ischemia and extended liver resection to induce acute liver failure in a porcine model as a means of studying bioartificial liver support.

Method: A subtotal (75-80% resection) extended left hepatectomy was performed in 7 pigs after 60 min warm ischemia of the future remnant liver.

Chronic renal failure leads to a reduction of bone mineral density (BMD). Therefore, noninvasive methods to evaluate BMD are also used regularly in this patient population. In this study, we compared the results of two widely used methods, quantitative computed tomography (QCT) of the lumbar spine and dual x-ray absorptiometry (DXA) at different sites in 90 patients on chronic hemodialysis.
