This retrospective study aimed to investigate the response to hepatitis A virus (HAV) immunization following liver transplantation. We analyzed 234 vaccination records of 284 children who underwent liver transplantation between January 2003 and July 2021, including annual serologic results. Of the 120 HAV-naïve patients, approximately 71% and 83% showed seroconversion after receiving 1 and 2 vaccine doses, respectively.

Article Synopsis
  • The study analyzed 1645 liver transplants, focusing on 421 pediatric cases at Hannover Medical School from 2005 to 2021, highlighting the lack of comprehensive data in this area.
  • It found that pleural effusions were the most common postoperative complications (49.4%), with donor age and recipient age being significant risk factors for developing them.
  • The authors suggest that preventive measures like intraoperative chest drain placement may improve outcomes, particularly for those at risk of biliary complications and retransplantation.

(1) : The aim of the present study was to assess the impact of reverberation on speech perception in noise and spatial release from masking (SRM) in bimodal or bilateral cochlear implant (CI) users and CI subjects with low-frequency residual hearing using combined electric-acoustic stimulation (EAS). (2) : In total, 10 bimodal, 14 bilateral CI users and 14 EAS users, and 17 normal hearing (NH) controls, took part in the study. Speech reception thresholds (SRTs) in unmodulated noise were assessed in co-located masker condition (S0N0) with a spatial separation of speech and noise (S0N60) in both free-field and loudspeaker-based room simulation for two different reverberation times.

Article Synopsis
  • STAT3 gain-of-function syndrome is an immune disorder that results in various immune system issues, often requiring immunomodulatory treatments like blocking interleukin-6 receptors or using JAK inhibitors (JAKi).
  • A study at Hannover University involved seven patients with STAT3-GOF, where five were treated with JAK inhibitors, leading to positive outcomes for many autoimmune and inflammatory symptoms.
  • Overall, JAKi treatment showed significant improvement for the majority of patients, but more long-term studies are necessary to understand the risks associated with extended use.

To assess a patient empowerment program (PEP) for children/adolescents with primary immunodeficiency (PID) on IgG replacement therapy regarding quality of life (QoL) in patients and proxy. Health-related QoL was assessed using KIDSCREEN-27 and DISABKIDS-37 before and 6 months after PID-PEP kids in 19 children/adolescents and their parents. The following three dimensions of the KIDSCREEN-27 significantly increased in children/adolescents after PID-PEP kids as compared with baseline: Psychological Well-Being, Parents & Autonomy and School Environment.
