Mutations in the Rett Syndrome Patients from South India.

Background: Rett syndrome (RTT) is a rare neurological disorder that primarily affects the females. Most cases of RTT are caused by a de novo mutation in the MECP2 gene located on the X chromosome. About 1000 MECP2 mutations have been found to be associated with RTT.

The ECG made easy for the dental practitioner.

ECG is not taught to dental students formally in the dental curriculum. The general assumption is that dental surgeons do not handle any ECG related cases in clinical practice. But with an increase in medically compromised patients, the need for an interdisciplinary approach among dental and medical practitioners in the treatment of critically ill patients is becoming more relevant.

Percutaneous cholecystostomy as an alternative to cholecystectomy in high risk patients with biliary sepsis: a district general hospital experience.

Introduction: Cholecystectomy is the standard treatment for patients with acute cholecystitis. However, percutaneous cholecystostomy (PC) is an alternative for patients at high risk for surgery. We present our five-year clinical experience with the aim of evaluating the efficacy of PC in high risk patients.

Autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD), an inherited disease, leads to cyst formation in the kidneys. In this condition, the kidneys are grossly enlarged with multiple cysts that result in kidney failure in a majority of individuals. This condition is also associated with cysts in other organs.

Spontaneous abscess of the lumbar spine presenting as subacute back pain.

A 52-year-old lady was admitted with back pain, fever and reduced sensation in her left leg. Soon after admission she developed acute urinary retention. She underwent urgent MRI of the spine which showed an epidural abscess compressing the thecal sac which was treated with neurosurgical decompression and intravenous/oral antibiotics.
