We aimed to evaluate the feasibility and effectiveness of customized 3-dimensional (3D)-printed finger splints in the treatment of mallet fingers. We categorized 21 patients into those who received the traditional finger splint (group A) and those treated with a customized 3D-printed finger splint (group B). We retrospectively analyzed the functional outcomes and patient satisfaction in the 2 groups.

Over the last decade, a () urethritis-causing clade (UC) has emerged to cause clusters of meningococcal urethritis in the United States and globally. One genomic signature of UC is the integration of () DNA in an operon, , which partially replaced the gene. IspD is the 2-C-methyl-d-erythritol 4-phosphate cytidylyltransferase of the terpenoid precursor synthesis pathway, required for the production of ubiquinones of the electron transfer chain.

SUMMARYThe human pathogen () is the causative agent of invasive meningococcal disease (IMD), usually presenting as meningitis, bacteremia, or sepsis. Unlike , antibiotic resistance in has developed slowly. However, in the last two decades and with the reemergence of IMD following the COVID-19 pandemic, antibiotic-resistant isolates, especially to penicillin and fluoroquinolones, have progressively increased.

Background: Delirium is a common and severe condition among adult intensive care unit (ICU) patients. Music intervention, as a non-pharmacological approach, has the potential to reduce delirium, but the optimal dosage and type of intervention remain unclear.

Aim: To explore the effects of music intervention at different doses and types on reducing delirium in ICU patients.

The aqueous zinc metal battery holds great potential for large-scale energy storage due to its safety, low cost, and high theoretical capacity. However, challenges such as corrosion and dendritic growth necessitate controlled zinc deposition. This study employs epitaxy to achieve large-area, dense, and ultraflat zinc plating on textured copper foil.

Background: Non-invasive temporal artery thermometers (TATs) and non-contact infrared thermometers (NCITs) are increasingly used in community settings to measure body temperature. Existing research predominantly focuses on pediatric populations, yet the accuracy and precision of TATs and NCITs for fever screening across age groups remain unclear. This study aims to assess age-related differences in the diagnostic accuracy of TATs and NCITs for fever detection.

Background: Clusters of male urethritis cases, caused by a novel clade of non-groupable Neisseria meningitidis (NmUC, "the clade"), have been reported globally. Genetic features unique to NmUC isolates include: the acquisition of the gonococcal denitrification loci, norB-aniA; a unique factor H binding protein (fHbp) variant; and loss of group C capsule and intrinsic lipooligosaccharide sialylation. We hypothesized that these characteristics might confer a colonization and survival advantage to NmUC during male urethral infection relative to non-clade group C Neisseria meningitidis.

Aim: To evaluate the effectiveness of an interactive e-book in improving new nurses' knowledge, coping behaviors and preventive strategies for sexual harassment prevention, while also assessing its impact on learning motivation.

Background: Sexual harassment has a detrimental effect on nurses' physical and mental well-being, as well as on patient safety, with new nurses being particularly vulnerable.

Design: A single centre, randomized controlled study.

The 4CMenB (Bexsero) vaccine contains detergent-extracted outer membrane vesicles (OMVs) from a Neisseria meningitidis (Nm) group B strain NZ98/254 and three recombinant Nm protein antigens: Neisseria adhesin A (NadA), Factor H binding protein (FHbp, as the C-terminal protein in the GNA2091-FHbp fusion), and Neisserial Heparin Binding Antigen (NHBA, as the N-terminal protein in the NHBA-GNA1030 fusion). Previous work has shown that 4CMenB generates serum antibodies to Nm and Neisseria gonorrhoeae (Ng) OMV proteins and lipooligosaccharide (LOS). Mounting evidence indicates 4CMenB can partially protect against mucosal infections with Ng.

The experience of pain is complex, involving both sensory and affective components, yet the underlying neural mechanisms remain elusive. Here, we show that formalin-induced pain behaviors coincide with increased responses in glutamatergic neurons within the anterior paraventricular nucleus of the thalamus (PVA). Furthermore, we describe non-overlapping subpopulations of PVAVgluT2 neurons involved in sensory and affective pain processing, whose activity varies across different pain states.

Introduction: Manual Coronary Artery Calcium (CAC) scoring, crucial for assessing coronary artery disease risk, is time-consuming and variable. Deep learning, particularly through Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs), promises to automate and enhance the accuracy of CAC scoring, which this study investigates.

Methods: Following Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines, we conducted a comprehensive literature search across PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and IEEE databases from their inception until November 1, 2023, and selected studies that employed deep learning for automated CAC scoring.

Article Synopsis
  • Endometrial cancer (EC) is a widespread gynecological cancer with poor outcomes, and Ovatodiolide (OVA), a compound from Anisomeles indica, has shown potential anticancer effects.
  • OVA reduces the growth and colony formation of EC cells by causing G2/M phase cell cycle arrest, increasing reactive oxygen species (ROS), and initiating DNA damage responses, which affect key cell cycle regulators.
  • Additionally, OVA decreases the self-renewal ability of cancer stem cells and reduces the expression of stemness proteins, indicating its potential as a therapeutic option for treating EC either alone or in combination with other treatments.

Article Synopsis
  • A study compared the hypersensitivity reactions of a new dermal filler (test filler) made with a novel cross-linking technology to a traditional filler (control filler) for correcting nasolabial folds.
  • Participants (n = 279) underwent a screening allergy test with intradermal injections, where the test filler showed no allergic reactions (0%) while the control filler had a small percentage (1.5%).
  • Overall, the test filler had fewer hypersensitivity reactions, no serious adverse events related to its use, and most side effects were common and resolved within a year, supporting its safe application without skin testing beforehand.

Background: There have been limited data on idiopathic intracranial hypertension (IIH) in Asians and there remain uncertainties whether a cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) pressure of 250 mm CSF is an optimum diagnostic cutoff. The aims of the present study included (1) characterization of IIH patients in Taiwan, (2) comparisons among different diagnostic criteria for IIH, and (3) comparisons between patients with CSF pressures of > 250 and 200-250 mm CSF.

Methods: This retrospective study involved IIH patients based on the modified Dandy criteria from two tertiary medical centers in Taiwan.

Silicon-vacancy (SiV) centers in diamond are emerging as promising quantum emitters in applications such as quantum communication and quantum information processing. Here, we demonstrate a sub-μs pulsed annealing treatment that dramatically increases the photoluminescence of SiV centers in diamond. Using a silane-functionalized adamantane precursor and a laser-heated diamond anvil cell, the temperature and energy conditions required to form SiV centers in diamond were mapped out via an optical thermometry system with an accuracy of ±50 K and a 1 μs temporal resolution.
