Purpose: Smoking and the incidence of age-related macular degeneration (AMD) have been linked to an overactive complement system. Here, we examined in a retrospective cohort study whether AMD-associated single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), smoking, ethnicity, and disease status are correlated with blood complement levels.
Methods: : The study involved 91 AMD patients and 133 controls, which included 73% Americans of European descent (EUR) and 27% Americans of African descent (AFR) in South Carolina.
A 14-year-old boy presented with a presumed diagnosis of autosomal recessive spastic ataxia of Charlevoix-Saguenay (ARSACS). The neurological examination, nerve conduction study, and brain imaging results were all consistent with the diagnosis. The ophthalmologic examination was notable for a prominent myelinated nerve fiber layer extending from the disk along the major temporal arcades in both eyes.

Background: Acute retinal necrosis (ARN), a vision threatening viral retinitis, is often diagnosed and treated based on clinical findings. These clinical features have been well characterized by various imaging modalities, but not using fundus autofluorescence (FAF), a noninvasive method of evaluating the neurosensory retina and retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) based on the detection of endogenous fluorophores.
Findings: A patient diagnosed with ARN was followed over a 10-month period to identify and document the fundus findings using FAF imaging.
Optical disector counting is currently applied most often to cryosections, followed in frequency by resin-embedded tissues, paraffin, and vibratome sections. The preservation quality of these embedding options differs considerably; yet, the effect of tissue morphology on numerical estimates is unknown. We tested whether different embedding media significantly influence numerical estimates in optical disector counting, using the previously calibrated trochlear motor nucleus of hatchling chickens.
