A substantial percentage of the positions that open in medical management are filled through the use of recruitment firms. This is especially true of more senior positions, but it applies across the full spectrum of openings. If the working arrangement between the recruitment firm and the potential candidate is to be effective, certain key ingredients are necessary.

The purpose of the study was to assess whether Community Mental Health Centers (CMHC) operate at different levels of technical efficiency in the production of case management services. A nonparametric technique, Data Envelopement Analysis (DEA), was used to compare 39 CMHC case management programs. The CMHCs, located in Virginia, were compared on the basis of actual performance as reported in annual statistical reports.

The semantic priming task is a valuable tool in the investigation of semantic memory impairments in patients with acquired disorders of language. This is because priming performance reflects automatic or implicit access to semantic information, unlike most other tests of semantic knowledge, which rely on explicit, voluntary access. Priming results are important for two main reasons: First, normal priming results may be observed in patients who perform poorly on other semantic memory tests, enabling us to distinguish between loss of, or damage to, information in semantic memory, and voluntary access to that information.

A number of recent articles have claimed that the language comprehension impairments of so-called agrammatic patients can be characterized as being due to problems with the automatic access of semantic and/or syntactic information from the lexicon. We describe three experiments, all using tasks which probe the immediate and automatic access of lexical information and compare the performance of agrammatic patients with that of an anomic and a fluent patient. We find no evidence in support of the automaticity hypothesis as an explanatory account of the language deficits of agrammatic aphasics.

The career expectations of pharmacists who have completed postgraduate training in drug information were studied. A questionnaire was mailed to all pharmacists who completed fellowships or residencies in drug information from 1989 to 1993 and the current preceptors of such programs. Recipients were asked to provide information about past and present positions, residency or fellowship training goals, characteristics of an ideal practice setting, satisfaction with current positions, professional activities, and future career goals.

We report the auditory lexical decision performance of four patients, all of whom are clinically diagnosed as Broca's aphasics. In a task that separates associative from semantic priming, all four patients show significant priming effects and no interaction with type of relatedness. We find no evidence to support some of the current accounts of these patients' linguistic difficulties in terms of an impairment in automatic processing routines.

The extent to which institutional pharmacies comply with the accreditation standards of the Joint Commission on the Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) and the ASHP guidelines for reporting adverse drug reactions (ADRs) was evaluated. A survey was mailed to directors of pharmacy at 444 randomly selected hospitals to collect information on their institutions' ADR programs; the survey addressed each point in the JCAHO accreditation standards and the ASHP guidelines. The 176 usable responses indicated that 89.

There is a growing importance and need for the documentation of the clinical work done by the pharmacist in providing pharmaceutical care. The data provided by documentation of care are critical to the effective and efficient transition from a product-based profession to a patient-care, service-based profession, especially during a period of great scrutiny of resource utilization in the hospital industry. Intervention documentation can serve both to document the provision of pharmaceutical care to individual patients and to provide critical information to managers to justify and expand the level of service provided.

A more sophisticated healthcare industry, challenged by competition and payer demands, also looks for sophistication when filling its senior financial positions. Individuals with experience in managed care contract negotiations, knowledge of hospital-physician ventures, and superior planning and treasury management skills are increasingly sought by hospitals. Some organizations also may single out chief financial officers able to assume broader administrative duties, including chief executive officer positions.

The stages in the design, procurement and implementation of a micro-computer-based animal health information system are described. The scenario presented is that of a national Director of Veterinary Services taking his first steps in the computerisation of an epidemiology unit, but sub-national and international issues are also discussed. The administrative and management aspects are considered and the need to incorporate computers into a carefully designed and appropriate information system is emphasised.

Acute coadministrations of an inhibitor of endopeptidase 24.11 (thiorphan) and a ligand (SC-46542) selective for the non-guanylate cyclase-linked atriopeptin binding sites increases urinary sodium excretion to a greater degree in conscious spontaneously hypertensive rats than in normotensive Wistar-Kyoto rats. In the present study, we examined the effects of chronic 10-day intravenous infusions of SC-46542 (des[Phe106,Gly107,Ala115,Gln116] atriopeptin-(103-126] (0.

In this paper, we study the ability of a non-fluent aphasic patient, BN, to comprehend morphologically complex words when they appear in utterance contexts. We first establish that he is insensitive to the contextual appropriateness of both derived and inflected words. In a further experiment we show that he has no difficulty processing the stems of complex words and conclude that his problem is with the bound morphemes themselves.

We examined the interaction of a non-guanylate cyclase-linked atriopeptin (AP) binding site ligand, SC-46542 (des[Phe106,Gly107,Ala115,Gln116]AP-(103-126], and an endopeptidase 24.11 inhibitor, thiorphan, on mean arterial pressure, urinary sodium excretion, urinary cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP) excretion, plasma cGMP concentration, and plasma AP immunoreactivity (ir) in conscious spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR) and normotensive Wistar-Kyoto rats (WKY). Compared to vehicle control rats, coadministration of SC-46542 and thiorphan increased urinary sodium excretion in SHR from 2.

Job candidates are often extremely naive when interviewing for a new position. They have been told to "sell themselves," and that's what they set out to do. Unfortunately, some jobs are not worth the effort.

A process for designing and implementing a new procedure for handling discharge prescriptions is described. Hospital administration requested that the pharmacy department develop a new procedure to handle discharge medications. The old procedure, in which discharge prescriptions were filled by decentralized pharmacy personnel and delivered to patients' rooms, resulted in lost revenues from third-party payers and in delays for patients leaving the hospital.

We studied the interaction of amiodarone hydrochloride (Cordarone) and its major metabolite desethylamiodarone with the muscarinic receptor in purified canine cardiac sarcolemmal vesicles by measuring equilibrium binding of the muscarinic antagonist [3H]quinuclidinyl benzilate (QNB) and carbachol displacement of [3H]-QNB. At a [3H]-QNB concentration of 0.02 nM, equilibrium binding was inhibited by amiodarone and desethylamiodarone with an IC50 of 6.

Negative sera often produce false-positive polar patterns of fluorescence in indirect immunofluorescence tests for serum anti-Toxoplasma gondii antibodies, representing a confounding factor in the diagnosis of toxoplasmosis. In this work, we studied whether T. gondii trophozoites, the antigenic material used in the immunofluorescence tests, expressed surface Fc receptors that could cause the binding of normal immunoglobulins, thus producing false-positive results.
