To describe a case of frosted branch angiitis-like retinal vasculitis that developed after scleral buckle surgery. A single case was evaluated. Five days after nondrainage scleral buckle surgery with a segmental buckle and encircling band, an otherwise healthy 39-year-old man presented with frosted branch angiitis.

Drug abuse continues to pose a significant challenge in HIV control efforts. In our investigation, we discovered that cocaine not only upregulates the expression of the DNA-dependent protein kinase (DNA-PK) but also augments DNA-PK activation by enhancing its phosphorylation at S2056. Moreover, DNA-PK phosphorylation triggers the higher localization of the DNA-PK into the nucleus.

Nontuberculous mycobacterial (NTM) infections are increasingly recognized, particularly in tropical regions and are often found in immunocompetent individuals. These infections are emerging as significant health concerns, especially pulmonary NTM, which is reported more frequently and is known to be associated with hospital environments. While pulmonary NTM infections are on the rise, partly due to drug resistance and possible patient-to-patient transmission, there is no current evidence indicating an increase in cutaneous NTM infections.

Narrow band green emitting phosphors have gained widespread attention due to their application in white light emitting diode (wLED) backlight displays. Commercial backlight displays have a broad band green phosphor which limits their performance. In this work, bright, narrow and thermally stable green emitting MgGaO:Mn (MGO-Mn) has been synthesized.

Floods and droughts are signature phases of the same hydrological cycle. Despite their profound impacts on the socio-economic structures and population globally, limited research efforts have encapsulated the resultant compound risks from them. Comprehending both water extremes presents a formidable challenge due to the relatively short-term occurrence of floods versus the prolonged impacts of droughts.

We report a rare case of furuncular myiasis in a 7-year-old boy presenting with a discharging nodule over the scalp. The report details the clinical presentation, examination findings, and dermoscopic features of furuncular myiasis. To the best of our knowledge, Chrysomya bezziana has never been reported to cause furuncular myiasis.

Article Synopsis
  • Misfolded tau proteins, associated with neurodegeneration in Alzheimer's and frontotemporal dementia, spread between cells but the exact release mechanisms are not well understood.
  • Research shows that the neuronal gene Arc is crucial for packing tau into extracellular vesicles (EVs) that can elicit tau pathology-seeding in the brain.
  • In experiments, Arc knockout mice produced fewer tau-containing EVs and demonstrated a significant reduction in intercellular tau transmission, indicating that Arc plays a vital role in both tau release and its spread across neurons.

Purpose: To describe the clinical course and treatment outcomes of Vogt-Koyanagi-Harada (VKH) disease during pregnancy.

Methods: This retrospective study compares the clinical course and outcomes in pregnant and nonpregnant women with VKH. All VKH patients who were pregnant at presentation or on follow up and age-matched nonpregnant female controls during the study period (2013-2022) were included.

Astrocytomas that harbor recurrent genomic alterations in MYB or MYBL1 are a group of Pediatric-type diffuse low-grade gliomas that were newly recognized in the 2021 WHO Classification of Tumors of the Central Nervous System. These tumors are described in the WHO classification as harboring fusions in MYB or MYBL1. In this report, we examine 14 consecutive cases in which a MYB or MYBL1 alteration was identified, each with diagnostic confirmation by genome-wide DNA methylation profiling (6 Angiocentric gliomas and 8 Diffuse astrocytomas, MYB- or MYBL1-altered), for their specific genomic alterations in these genes.

Article Synopsis
  • Macrocycles, derived from natural products, are important in fighting infectious diseases, particularly malaria and certain tropical parasites.
  • Researchers discovered new macrocycles related to hymenocardine that effectively inhibit the growth of these parasites, some being more potent than the existing oral drug miltefosine for visceral leishmaniasis.
  • While these new compounds show good cell permeability and potential for oral use, challenges remain regarding their low solubility and metabolic stability, suggesting further optimization is needed to enhance their effectiveness.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the prevalence of a particular bacterial infection in patients showing symptoms related to gastritis and peptic ulcers, which are linked to serious gastrointestinal diseases.
  • A total of 67 patients were analyzed, revealing that 43% tested positive for the infection, with various endoscopic findings, including stomach ulcers and nonulcer dyspepsia.
  • The urease test used in the study is noted for its quick results and high accuracy, but its invasive nature limits its acceptance among patients.

The energy response of gross gamma dose rate monitors needs to be flat in order to prevent overestimation of dose at low gamma energies. In this paper, a discriminator threshold modulation based electronic energy compensation algorithm has been proposed for SiPM-scintillator based gamma detectors. Theoretical simulation studies were carried out in order to optimize the parameters of the periodic ramp voltage used for modulation of the discriminator threshold of a SiPM-GGAG:Ce,B based gamma dose rate monitor.

Microvascular complications of diabetic retinopathy (DR) may require surgical intervention in the form of vitrectomy. Since its inception, diabetic vitrectomy has evolved with introduction of better instruments, newer techniques, and smaller port sizes. Common indications for diabetic vitrectomy include nonresolving vitreous hemorrhage, tractional retinal detachment, epiretinal membrane, progression of fibrovascular membranes despite laser therapy, recalcitrant diabetic macular edema, and neovascular glaucoma.

  • This study analyzed the clinical profile and donor characteristics of adverse events following optical keratoplasty from 2013 to 2022, reviewing data from over 37,000 donor corneas used for various types of keratoplasty.
  • A total of 41 post-keratoplasty infections (0.11%) were recorded, primarily after endothelial keratoplasty, with a majority of infections caused by multidrug-resistant gram-negative bacteria.
  • The research highlighted the importance of understanding infection trends and microbiological profiles linked to keratoplasty complications to inform future practices and improve patient outcomes.*

The protein dynamical transition at ~200 K, where the biomolecule transforms from a harmonic, non-functional form to an anharmonic, functional state, has been thought to be slaved to the thermal activation of dynamics in its surface hydration water. Here, by selectively probing the dynamics of protein and hydration water using elastic neutron scattering and isotopic labeling, we found that the onset of anharmonicity in the two components around 200 K is decoupled. The one in protein is an intrinsic transition, whose characteristic temperature is independent of the instrumental resolution time, but varies with the biomolecular structure and the amount of hydration, while the one of water is merely a resolution effect.

Non-infectious uveitis (NIU) encompasses a range of conditions marked by inflammation within various layers of the eye. NIU is a significant contributor to irreversible vision loss among the working-age population in developed countries. The aim of treating uveitis is to manage inflammation, prevent its recurrences and to restore or salvage vision.

DNA polymerase theta (Polθ) is a DNA helicase-polymerase protein that facilitates DNA repair and is synthetic lethal with homology-directed repair (HDR) factors. Thus, Polθ is a promising precision oncology drug-target in HDR-deficient cancers. Here, we characterize the binding and mechanism of action of a Polθ helicase (Polθ-hel) small-molecule inhibitor (AB25583) using cryo-EM.
