Article Synopsis
  • Acute cardiorespiratory failure disrupts energy balance, with elevated lactate levels and decreased pH indicating severe conditions like Acute Cardiogenic Pulmonary Edema (ACPO), which has high mortality risk.
  • A study conducted in a metropolitan emergency department from May 2021 to August 2023 involving 106 patients with ACPO found that a lactate clearance below 14.29% was significantly linked to increased mortality.
  • The study suggests lactate clearance could be an important early indicator for treatment decisions in ACPO, but calls for further multicenter research to better understand its predictive value.

: Spontaneous bacterial peritonitis (SBP) is a life-threatening disease that requires early diagnosis and treatment. It is known that a positive culture result for SBP, which is a common reason for admission to the emergency department, is related to the severity and prognosis of the disease. However, as it is not possible to determine the culture result in the early stage of the disease, different methods are required to predict prognosis in the emergency department.
