A key developmental stage in mammalian folliculogenesis is the formation of a fluid-filled lumen (antrum) prior to ovulation. While it has long been speculated that the follicular fluid is essential for oocyte maturation and ovulation, little is known about the morphogenesis and the mechanisms driving the antrum formation and ovulation, potentially due to challenges in imaging tissue dynamics in large tissues. Misregulation of such processes leads to anovulation, a hallmark of infertility in ageing and diseases such as the polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS).

Cell division is fundamental to all healthy tissue growth, as well as being rate-limiting in the tissue repair response to wounding and during cancer progression. However, the role that cell divisions play in tissue growth is a collective one, requiring the integration of many individual cell division events. We measure different contributions to entropy production in a living functional epithelial tissue. We do this by extracting the functional dynamics of development while at the same time quantifying fluctuations. Using the translucent Drosophila melanogaster pupal epithelium as an ideal tissue for high-resolution live imaging, we measure the entropy associated with the stochastic geometry of cells in the epithelium.

Wound healing is an aspect of normal physiology that we all take for granted until it goes wrong, such as, for example, the scarring that results from a severe burn, or those patients who suffer from debilitating chronic wounds that fail to heal. Ever since wound repair research began as a discipline, clinicians and basic scientists have collaborated to try and understand the cell and molecular mechanisms that underpin healthy repair in the hope that this will reveal clues for the therapeutic treatment of pathological healing. This study retrospectively compared the prevalence of factors related to the female athlete triad (low energy availability, secondary amenorrhea (SA), low bone mineral density (BMD)), and post-study BMD of female college students and female international volunteer missionaries (volunteers). (1) Background: Cardiotonic steroids have been found to stimulate collagen synthesis and might be potential wound healing therapeutics. The objective of this study was to evaluate the feasibility of digitoxigenin and its topical formulation for wound healing; (2) Methods: In the in vitro study, the human dermal fibroblast cells were treated with digitoxigenin and collagen synthesis was assessed. In the in vivo study, digitoxigenin was applied to excisional full-thickness wounds in rats immediately after wounding and remained for three days, and wound open was evaluated over 10 days.

The reported optical, physical, and chemical properties of aqueous Maillard reaction mixtures of small aldehydes (glyoxal, methylglyoxal, and glycolaldehyde) with ammonium sulfate and amines are compared with those of aqueous extracts of ambient aerosol (water-soluble organic carbon, WSOC) and the humic-like substances (HULIS) fraction of WSOC. Using a combination of new and previously published measurements, we examine fluorescence, X-ray absorbance, UV/vis, and IR spectra, complex refractive indices, (1)H and (13)C NMR spectra, thermograms, aerosol and electrospray ionization mass spectra, surface activity, and hygroscopicity. Atmospheric WSOC and HULIS encompass a range of properties, but in almost every case aqueous aldehyde-amine reaction mixtures are squarely within this range.
