Introduction: Facial gunshot wounds have devastating functional and aesthetic consequences for the patient. If associated with penetrating craniocerebral injuries, the prognosis is rather compromised even with appropriate medical and surgical treatment. Chop-off injuries with penetrating wounds constitute a challenging situation for the facial reconstructive surgeon in facial trauma.

Determinants for Mediterranean diet adherence beyond the boundaries: a cross-sectional study from Sharjah, the United Arab Emirates.

Background: Substantial evidence embraced the nutrition competence of the Mediterranean diet (MD) as a healthy model for decreasing the risk of chronic diseases and increasing longevity, with the bonus of ensuring environmental sustainability. Measuring adherence to this diet is marginally investigated in the Arabian Gulf region, an area away from the Mediterranean region. The current study aimed to assess the MD adherence among adults in Sharjah/the United Arab Emirates (UAE), and to identify the most influential predictors for MD adherence among the study participants.

Glial overexpression of Tspo extends lifespan and protects against frataxin deficiency in Drosophila.

The translocator protein TSPO is an evolutionary conserved mitochondrial protein overexpressed in various contexts of neurodegeneration. Friedreich Ataxia (FA) is a neurodegenerative disease due to GAA expansions in the FXN gene leading to decreased expression of frataxin, a mitochondrial protein involved in the biosynthesis of iron-sulfur clusters. We previously reported that Tspo was overexpressed in a Drosophila model of this disease generated by CRISPR/Cas9 insertion of approximately 200 GAA in the intron of fh, the fly frataxin gene.

Diabetes-related lower limb wounds: Antibiotic susceptibility pattern and biofilm formation.

Caffeine intake and its association with nutrition, sleep, and physical activity among schoolchildren in the United Arab Emirates: a national cross-sectional study.

Purpose: Recent surveys indicate a significant increase in total caffeine intake among schoolchildren. Limited research has been published concerning the total intake of caffeine among schoolchildren in the Middle East and Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries, including the UAE.

Methods: This cross-sectional survey estimated the total caffeine intake from foods and beverages among 10,275 schoolchildren in the UAE.

Background: Consumption of caffeinated energy drinks (CED) has escalated during the last few years, especially among schoolchildren, with evident adverse health sequelae in this critical age group.

Sexual Assault of Women in the region of Kairouan, Tunisia: an 8-year retrospective study on epidemiological and medicolegal characteristics.

Background: Despite the abundance of studies reporting the prevalence of women's sexual abuse all over the world, there is a real lack of such reports in developing countries in general and Arab-Muslim societies in particular. However, due to the little number of published studies in Tunisia, and the absence of a national database, data on female sexual assaults are still underestimated, which is a gap that needs to be filled in order to make specific preventive actions. Fatal donkey bite in children: a case report.

Although animal-inflicted injuries are a worldwide major public health problem, lethal donkey bites have very rarely been reported. We describe the case of a 21-month-old girl that was found dead in a farmyard next to a donkey that belonged to the family. Examination of the body showed bite marks on the right side of the neck and the upper part of the shoulder.

An Unusual Cervical Injury Caused by Accidental Electrical Burns.

High-voltage electrocution is mostly unintentional, and it is associated with significant morbidity and mortality due to severe tissue damages. The present report describes an atypical electrocution with multiple victims and a fatal outcome of a 48-year-old man due to unusual neck injuries caused by accidental electrical burns.

A case of sudden death due to spontaneous right subclavian artery dissection.

Acute subclavian artery dissection (SAD) is a rare entity which is usually associated with several vascular abnormalities and traumatic events. Spontaneous SAD remains exceptional and often affects the left artery. We report the autopsy case of a 29-year-old female who died suddenly following a spontaneous dissection of the right subclavian artery.

Woodhouse-Sakati Syndrome: Report of the First Tunisian Family with the C2orf37 Gene Mutation.

Woodhouse-Sakati syndrome (WSS) is an infrequent autosomal recessive condition characterized by progressive extrapyramidal signs, mental retardation, hypogonadism, alopecia, and diabetes mellitus. This syndrome belongs to a heterogeneous group of inherited neurodegenerative disorders characterized iron accumulation in the brain, and it is caused by mutations of the C2orf37 gene. We report the first Tunisian family with two affected sisters presenting with a phenotype suggestive of WSS.

[Paraneoplastic cerebellar degeneration as the presenting manifestation of breast carcinoma: a case report].

Introduction: Paraneoplastic cerebellar degeneration may be a manifestation indicative of lung, gynecological or breast cancer. Nevertheless, breast cancer is rarely revealed by the occurrence of a paraneoplastic syndrome.

Case Report: We report a 38-year-old patient who presented a paraneoplastic cerebellar degeneration with anti-Yo antibodies as the presenting manifestation of a breast cancer.
