Article Synopsis
  • Neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer's and Parkinson's present major public health challenges, with both genetic and environmental factors, particularly diet and lifestyle, playing a role.
  • This study investigates how Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids affect neuroinflammation using BV-2 microglial cells, examining cell viability, cytokine production, and cellular changes based on different fatty acid ratios.
  • Findings indicate that a 2/1 Omega-6 to Omega-3 ratio decreases cell viability while altering cytokine secretion, revealing complex interactions that could influence neuroinflammatory processes and suggesting a need for further research into their implications for neurodegenerative diseases.

Background: Urothelial bladder cancer is most frequently diagnosed at the non-muscle-invasive stage (NMIBC). However, recurrences and interventions for intermediate and high-risk NMIBC patients impact the quality of life. Biomarkers for patient stratification could help to avoid unnecessary interventions whilst indicating aggressive measures when required.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study explored how different ratios of omega-3 (ω-3) and omega-6 (ω-6) polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) affect microglial cells, which are important for immune response in the brain, when induced by lipopolysaccharide (LPS).
  • - Results indicated that specific PUFA ratios, particularly 7/1 and 2/1 ω-6/ω-3, led to more active microglial shapes and reduced secretion of tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α compared to the control group.
  • - The findings suggest that optimizing ω-6/ω-3 intake ratios could be beneficial for managing neuroinflammation and developing dietary strategies

Esophageal cancer (EC) is the eighth most prevalent malignancy and the sixth leading cause of cancer-related death worldwide. The proportion of older adults with EC has increased dramatically in recent decades due to increased life expectancy. Older patients with EC are at a highest risk of malnutrition and this predicts early death.

Intrauterine life is one of the most important periods of life. As the development of the fetus continues, the mechanisms that affect adult health also begin to mature. With the hypothesis denoted "fetal programming," it is thought that the presence of endocrinological disorders, toxins, infectious agents, the nutritional status of a mother, and nutrients related to placental functionality all have an effect on future life.

Clinical utility of cisplatin based neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NAC) prior to radical cystectomy is limited because of lack of tools that can guide for a better patient selection. We aim to explore if a combination of biomarkers is superior to a single marker. Pretreatment tumor specimens and clinical data from two randomized trials including 250 patients with T2-T4 urothelial bladder cancer, were used.

Currently, combination therapy is considered the most effective solution for a selective chemotherapeutic effect in the treatment of colon cancer. This study investigated the death of both colon cancer HT29 cells and healthy vascular smooth muscle TG-Ha-VSMC cells (VSMCs) induced by naringin combined with endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress and NF-κB inhibition. Naringin combined with tunicamycin and BAY 11-7082 suppressed the proliferation of HT29 cells in a dose-dependent manner and induced particularly apoptotic death without significantly affecting healthy VSMCs according to Annexin V/PI staining and AO/EB staining analyses.

Response to neoadjuvant cisplatin treatment in bladder cancer has been linked to expression of Bcl-2 protein by cancer cells. The objective of this study was to test Bcl-2 as a predictive marker of neoadjuvant cisplatin chemotherapy response in a patient cohort from randomized cystectomy trials. Tumor samples were taken from 247 patients with T2-T4 bladder cancer enrolled in two randomized trials comparing cystectomy with or without neoadjuvant chemotherapy.

Objectives: The aim of this study was to test choline-phosphate cytidylyltransferase-α (CCT-α) protein as a biomarker for neoadjuvant cisplatin chemotherapy response in a bladder tumor setting.

Materials And Methods: A total of 238 patients with T2-T4 bladder cancer enrolled into two prior randomized trials comparing neoadjuvant cisplatin-based chemotherapy (NAC) plus cystectomy with cystectomy only (no-NAC) were used as discovery and validation cohorts. Protein expression was determined with immunohistochemistry and assessed with Histo (H)-scoring.

Objectives: Dual antiplatelet therapy (DAPT), consisting of clopidogrel and aspirin, is the main-stay treatment of acute coronary syndromes (ACS). However, major adverse cardiovascular events may occur even in patients undergoing DAPT, and this has been related to the variable pharmacodynamic efficacy of these drugs, especially clopidogrel. Platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) and neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) are novel inflammatory markers for cardiovascular risk stratification, which may reflect an inflammatory state and thus high on-treatment platelet reactivity (HPR).
