New Insights Toward Nanostructured Drug Delivery of Plant-Derived Polyphenol Compounds: Cancer Treatment and Gene Expression Profiles.

The increasing prevalence of cancer has led to expanding traditional medicine objectives for developing novel drug delivery systems. A wide range of plant-derived polyphenol bioactive substances have been investigated in order to explore the anti-cancer effects of these natural compounds and to promote the effective treatment of cancer through apoptosis induction. In this regard, plant-derived polyphenol compounds, including curcumin, silibinin, quercetin, and resveratrol, have been the subject of intense interest for anti-cancer applications due to their ability to regulate apoptotic genes.

[Prostate cancer detection rates: comparison of standard biopsy with prompt rebiopsy and a one-time extended biopsy].

Establishment and activity of medical societies in Lower Styria - a review.

In the 1860s, the medical societies in Habsburg Monarchy, undertook a part of the medical postgraduate training. Doctors and wound surgeons from Ljubljana established medical association in October 1861 («Ärztlicher Leseverein in Laibach»). At a meeting in October 1862 they decided to include all the doctors and wound surgeons from the Carniola region.

Prevalent hypovitaminosis D in Crohn's disease correlates highly with mediators of osteoimmunology.

Purpose: In the context of osteoimmunology in Crohn's disease, an association was hypothesized among vitamin D and members of the TNF-α family, known as the RANK (receptor-activator of nuclear factor- κB)-RANK ligand-osteoprotegerin pathway.

Methods: This was a cross-sectional study of 95 patients with Crohn's disease (80 with long-standing disease and 15 newly diagnosed, never treated) and two control groups (healthy volunteers, n=30; and ulcerative colitis patients, n=30). Spine and hip bone mineral density was measured by dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry.

Measurement of spinal sagittal curvatures using the laser triangulation method.

The purpose of the first part of the study was to establish the variability of repeated measurements in different measuring conditions. In the second part, we performed in a large number of patients, a measurement of thoracic kyphosis and lumbar lordosis and compared them to age, gender, and level of nourishment. In the first part, measurements were performed on a plastic model of the back of a patient with a rigid and a normal spine.

Prevalence of nonspecific low back pain in schoolchildren in north-eastern Slovenia.

The aim of the study was to investigate the prevalence of the nonspecific low back pain (LBP) in a population of schoolchildren in Maribor, north-eastern Slovenia. 100 children from an elementary school (age 11-15 y) and 90 children from a secondary school (age 17-18 y) were included in the study and investigated with a structured Watson questionnaire to assess low back pain prevalence, symptom characteristics, psychosocial factors, demographic, and anthropometric items. The data was statistically analysed using the SPSS software.

Relationship of methylglyoxal-adduct biogenesis to LDL and triglyceride levels in diabetics.

Aims: Protein glycation leading to advanced glycation-endproducts (AGE) is enhanced in diabetes by increased blood glucose and collateral endogenous production of reactive α-dicarbonyls. Among AGE precursors, methylglyoxal (MG) is considered as one of the key intermediates. We hypothesized it to be a common product of both carbonyl and oxidative stress, and investigated its biogenesis in relation to glycemic and lipid status in diabetic patients.

The aim of this study was to confirm the benefits of regular once a week exercise training for the maintenance of fitness in postmenopausal women.

The role of procalcitonin in gynaecological surgery.

We evaluated postoperative concentrations of inflammatory indicators, including procalcitonin, after gynaecological operations for benign and malignant tumours in patients with a normal postoperative course and assessed the utility of procalcitonin in differentiating between non-bacterial inflammation and bacteraemic complications in the postoperative period. This prospective study included 99 patients: 47 after a standard gynaecological operation (Piver I) and no postoperative infectious complications (group 1), 35 after a major procedure (Piver II or III) and no postoperative infectious complications (group 2), and five with postoperative sepsis after Piver II or III procedures (group 3). We also studied serum procalcitonin concentrations in a group of 12 patients (group 4) with terminal forms of gynaecological cancer who were hospitalized for palliative treatment but did not undergo surgery.

Infrared thermography based on artificial intelligence as a screening method for carpal tunnel syndrome diagnosis.

This study further evaluated a computer-based infrared thermography (IRT) system, which employs artificial neural networks for the diagnosis of carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) using a large database of 502 thermal images of the dorsal and palmar side of 132 healthy and 119 pathological hands. It confirmed the hypothesis that the dorsal side of the hand is of greater importance than the palmar side when diagnosing CTS thermographically. Using this method it was possible correctly to classify 72.

Glycotoxines, carbonyl stress and relevance to diabetes and its complications.

A large body of evidence has implicated reactive carbonyl compounds as glycotoxic mediators of carbonyl stress. This review is focused on the pathophysiological effects of alpha oxoaldehydes in diabetes and related complications, summarizing the state-of-the-art on the endogenously produced carbonyls methylglyoxal, glyoxal and 3-deoxyglucosone, formed as glycolytic intermediates during metabolic conversion of glucose, via Maillard reaction by degradation of glycated proteins, and during lipid peroxidation process. Their role in the advanced glycation process and detrimental effects on vascular tissue are discussed.

Correlates of knee anterior laxity in sportswomen.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate whether any of the following factors are related to knee anterior laxity in healthy sportswomen: anthropometric characteristics, lower limb alignment characteristics, hormone-related factors and sport history. Six hundred and sixteen sportswomen were tested in the pre-season. The data have been analysed using linear regression for possible association of knee anterior laxity with other variables.

Methylglyoxal-derivative advanced glycation endproducts: detection by competitive immunofluorometric assay and quantifying in serum and urine.

Background: Advanced glycation endproducts (AGE) are a family of heterogeneous chemical structures formed on the host protein in the conditions of carbonyl or oxidative stress. Among AGE precursors, methylglyoxal (MG) is considered one of the key intermediates.

Methods: In the current study, we describe and evaluate a solid phase time-resolved fluoroimmunoassay (DELFIA) based on the competitive reaction between MG-AGE antibody and competitive antigen for detecting MG-adducts in serum and urine.

Objectives: The high incidence of bone disease and the increasing evidence of Crohn's disease (CD) bone decline in corticosteroid users and nonusers suggest that bone metabolism is affected by inflammatory process. The aim of the study was to compare serum levels of proinflammatory cytokines, markers of bone turnover and regulatory molecules of osteoclast biogenesis, receptor activator of nuclear factor kappaB-ligand (RANKL) and osteoprotegerin (OPG), between naïve and long-standing CD patients.

Methods: The study included 95 CD patients, 15 of them with newly diagnosed and previously untreated CD.

Competitive ELISAs for advanced glycation end product (AGE) measurements are based on anti-AGE-antibody and in vitro prepared AGE-carrier competitive antigen. AGE-human serum albumin (HSA) prepared by non-enzymatic reaction between protein and glucose is often used as a competitive antigen. The aim of the study was to examine the impact of pH on AGE-HSA preparation.

Infrared thermography based on artificial intelligence for carpal tunnel syndrome diagnosis.

Thermography for the measurement of surface temperatures is well known in industry, although is not established in medicine despite its safety, lack of pain and invasiveness, easy reproducibility, and low running costs. Promising results have been achieved in nerve entrapment syndromes, although thermography has never represented a real alternative to electromyography. Here an attempt is described to improve the diagnosis of carpal tunnel syndrome with thermography using a computer-based system employing artificial neural networks to analyse the images.
