Background: Virtual reality is becoming popular in the rehabilitation field thanks to the several advantages it can offer to patients and physicians. Indeed, serious games can: motivate and engage the patient; offer different levels of challenge and difficulty based on the patient baseline, and integrate objective measures of the patient's performance during each rehabilitation session.

This work aims at providing novel endovascular instrumentation to overcome current technical limitations of in situ endograft fenestration including challenges in targeting the fenestration site under fluoroscopic control and supplying mechanical support during endograft perforation. Novel electromagnetically trackable instruments were developed to facilitate the navigation of the fenestration device and its stabilization at the target site. In vitro trials were performed to preliminary evaluate the proposed instrumentation for the antegrade in situ fenestration of an aortic endograft, using a laser guidewire designed ad hoc and the sharp end of a commercial endovascular guidewire.

Introduction: Clinical care pathways reduce length of stay, variability in practice and costs, yet avoid compromising quality of care or increasing complications. In this study we describe a standardized care pathway, focusing on preoperative and postoperative education as well as immediate postoperative patient care after robotic assisted laparoscopic radical prostatectomy.

This paper presents a semiautomatic method, based on ultrasound (US) imaging, enabling a 3D evaluation of fascia mobility.

Methods: The proposed approach relies on the acquisition of 3D US datasets at rest and during a voluntary muscular contraction and consists of two phases: 3D US dataset analysis and generation of a displacement vector field using a block matching technique (Phase 1) and validation and filtering of the resulting displacement vector field for outliers removal (Phase 2).

This work presents a simulator based on patient specific data for bimanual surgical robots. Given a bimanual robot with a particular geometry and kinematics, and a patient specific virtual anatomy, the aim of this simulator was to evaluate if a dexterous movability was obtainable to avoid collisions with the surrounding virtual anatomy in order to prevent potential damages to the tissues during the real surgical procedure. A new method is proposed for the evaluation of the activity of sourdough strains, based on gas pressure measurements in closed air-tight reactors. Gas pressure and pH were monitored on-line during the cultivation of commercial yeasts and heterofermentative lactic acid bacteria on a semi-synthetic medium with glucose as the major carbon source. Relative gas pressure evolution was compared both to glucose consumption and to acidification and growth.

The new converting enzyme inhibitor cilazapril, or RO 31-2848, was evaluated in 14 healthy male volunteers. In a pilot study in two subjects, the inhibiting capacity of single oral doses of 5 and 10 mg on the pressure and heart rate response to exogenous angiotensin I was assessed. Both doses reduced the blood pressure response to angiotensin I to 10% of control within 45 min and for the 4 h tested.

The pathophysiological role of an increase in circulating vasopressin in sustaining global and regional vasoconstriction in patients with congestive heart failure has not been established, particularly in patients with hyponatraemia. To assess this further, 20 patients with congestive heart failure refractory to digoxin and diuretics were studied before and 60 minutes after the intravenous injection (5 micrograms/kg) of the vascular antagonist of vasopressin [1(beta-mercapto-beta,beta-cyclopentamethylene-propionic acid), 2-(0-methyl) tyrosine] arginine vasopressin. Ten patients were hyponatraemic (plasma sodium less than 135 mmol/l) and 10 were normonatraemic.

Synthetic atrial natriuretic peptide, containing 26 amino acids in the rat sequence, L-364, 343 (Ileu-ANP), was infused intravenously at increasing rates (1-40 micrograms/min) into four normal volunteers. Mean intraarterial blood pressure decreased and heart rate increased in cumulative-dose-dependent fashion. Skin blood flow as measured with a laser Doppler device rose already with a cumulative dose of 55 micrograms Ileu-ANP and further rises were directly related to dose.

To assess the role of vasopressin (AVP) in congestive heart failure (CHF), we investigated 10 patients with CHF refractory to conventional treatment, before and 60 minutes after intravenous administration of 5 micrograms/kg of d(CH2)5Tyr(Me)AVP, a specific antagonist of AVP at the vascular receptor level. Heart rate, systemic arterial pressure, pulmonary arterial pressure, pulmonary capillary wedge pressure, cardiac index by thermodilution, and cutaneous blood flow by laser-Doppler technique were measured. In 9 patients there was no significant hemodynamic and cutaneous blood flow response to the AVP antagonist.

Eight young addicts developed rhabdomyolysis as a complication of heroin overdose. ECG, plasma enzyme time activity curves and thallium myocardial scintigraphy were highly suggestive of a myocardial lesion associated with rhabdomyolysis. Such changes were particularly striking in 3 patients with acute left ventricular failure, as shown by a hemodynamic investigation (3 patients) and by echocardiography (1 patient).
