A professional musician with progressive visuospatial concerns: a case study and review of musical alexia.

This case report presents the story of Mr. S, a professional orchestral musician with declining musical sight-reading ability, followed by progressive visuospatial and language deficits. Our novel musical assessment battery revealed deficits in music-reading (musical alexia) and music-writing (musical agraphia), with spared auditory perception and expression.

Community engagement to develop a dialogue-drama on adolescent pregnancy in a marginalised migrant population on the Thailand-Myanmar border: an ethnographic approach to participatory action research.

Background: Communities in which adolescent pregnancy and safe abortion care are taboo may benefit from culturally appropriate information, education, and communication.

Objective: This ethnographic and participatory action research (PAR) elicited community members' perceptions to adolescent pregnancy: which then informed dialogue-drama development in Burmese and Karen language for undocumented migrants on the Thailand-Myanmar border.

Methods: PAR was conducted in Karen and Burmese language.

Background: A clear and precise definition of the "intended use" in developing new medical devices can determine the success of entering the healthcare market. For this, practical collaboration between the clinical and engineering experts is necessary, and an appropriate tool is required for effective information collection and decision-making in the process.

Methods: The Korean Academy of Medical Sciences, in cooperation with the Korean Medical Device Development Fund, implemented the Healthcare Experts' Advisory Unit and Support (HAUS) program to match advisory clinical experts in medical device development projects.

Background: While the amygdala receives early tau deposition in Alzheimer's disease (AD) and is involved in social and emotional processing, the relationship between amygdalar tau and early neuropsychiatric symptoms in AD is unknown. We sought to determine whether focal tau binding in the amygdala and abnormal amygdalar connectivity were detectable in a preclinical AD cohort and identify relationships between these and self-reported mood symptoms.

Methods: We examined 598 individuals (347 amyloid positive [58% female], 251 amyloid negative [62% female] subset in tau positron emission tomography and functional magnetic resonance imaging cohorts) from the A4 (Anti-Amyloid Treatment in Asymptomatic AD) Study.

Effect of anti-VEGF on retinal blood flow in diabetic mice using laser speckle flowgraphy.

Purpose: To assess intra- (repeatability) and inter-observer (reproducibility) variability of laser speckle flowgraphy (LSFG) for retinal blood flow (RBF) measurement in 20 eyes of wild type (C57BL/6J) mice and effect of intravitreal Aflibercept on RBF in optic nerve head (ONH) region of 10 eyes of Ins2 (Akita) diabetic mice.

Methods: 'Mean blur rate (MBR)' was measured for all quadrants of tissue area (MT), vessel (MV) and total area (MA) of ONH region. Changes in MT were analysed at each timepoint.

This study innovates livestock health management, utilizing a top-view depth camera for accurate cow lameness detection, classification, and precise segmentation through integration with a 3D depth camera and deep learning, distinguishing it from 2D systems. It underscores the importance of early lameness detection in cattle and focuses on extracting depth data from the cow's body, with a specific emphasis on the back region's maximum value. Precise cow detection and tracking are achieved through the Detectron2 framework and Intersection Over Union (IOU) techniques.

In this paper, a dual interface trapezium liquid prism with beam steering function is implemented and analyzed. The electrowetting-on-dielectric method is used to perform the desired beam steering function without mechanical moving parts. This work examines deflection angles at different applied voltages to determine the beam steering range.

Examining a Novel Legacy Activity for Elders: Oral Histories as Produced Stories.

Background: Many African American elders who participated in The Great Migration are in the latter years of their lives. One way to maintain their memories and those of elders at large is through legacy activities, projects that initiate a life review process resulting in a product surviving after an individual's death. However, literature on culturally attuned legacy activities as well as measurement of impact are limited.

Early Integrated Palliative Care Within a Surgical Oncology Clinic.

Importance: Advance directive (AD) designation is an important component of advance care planning (ACP) that helps align care with patient goals. However, it is underutilized in high-risk surgical patients with cancer, and multiple barriers contribute to the low AD designation rates in this population.

Objective: To assess the association of early palliative care integration with changes in AD designation among patients with cancer who underwent surgery.

Sub-Retinal Delivery of Human Embryonic Stem Cell Derived Photoreceptor Progenitors in rd10 Mice.

Regeneration of photoreceptor cells using human pluripotent stem cells is a promising therapy for the treatment of both hereditary and aging retinal diseases at advanced stages. We have shown human recombinant retina-specific laminin isoform matrix is able to support the differentiation of human embryonic stem cells (hESCs) to photoreceptor progenitors. In addition, sub-retinal injection of these cells has also shown partial restoration in the rd10 rodent and rabbit models.

Lack of retinoblastoma (Rb) protein causes aggressive intraocular retinal tumors in children. Recently, Rb tumors have been shown to have a distinctly altered metabolic phenotype, such as reduced expression of glycolytic pathway proteins alongside altered pyruvate and fatty acid levels. In this study, we demonstrate that loss of hexokinase 1(HK1) in tumor cells rewires their metabolism allowing enhanced oxidative phosphorylation-dependent energy production.

Intravitreal Neuroglobin Mitigates Primate Experimental Glaucomatous Structural Damage in Association with Reduced Optic Nerve Microglial and Complement 3-Astrocyte Activation.

Current management of glaucomatous optic neuropathy is limited to intraocular pressure control. Neuroglobin (Ngb) is an endogenous neuroprotectant expressed in neurons and astrocytes. We recently showed that exogenous intravitreal Ngb reduced inflammatory cytokines and microglial activation in a rodent model of hypoxia.

Akimba Proliferative Diabetic Retinopathy Model: Understanding Molecular Mechanism and Drug Screening for the Progression of Diabetic Retinopathy.

As the prevalence of diabetes has reached epidemic proportions worldwide, diabetic retinopathy incidence is increasing rapidly. An advanced diabetic retinopathy (DR) stage can lead to a sight-threatening form. There is growing evidence showing diabetes causes a range of metabolic changes that subsequently lead to pathological modifications in the retina and retinal blood vessels.

Seroprevalence and associated risk factors of Toxoplasma gondii infection among slaughterhouse workers in Yangon Region, Myanmar: A cross-sectional study.

Background: Toxoplasmosis, having the significant consequences affecting mortality and quality of life, is still prevalent in various places throughout the world. The major gap in surveillance for Toxoplasma gondii infection among high-risk population, slaughterhouse workers, is an obstacle for the effective policies formulation to reduce the burden of toxoplasmosis in Myanmar. Therefore, this study aimed to assess the seroprevalence of toxoplasmosis and associated factors of seropositivity among slaughterhouse workers in Yangon Region, Myanmar.

Cytoreductive surgery and hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy postoperative symptomatology: palliative care impact.

Objectives: Palliative care (PC) for patients with advanced cancer has been associated with improved symptom burden and quality of life (QoL). This study aimed to characterise postoperative symptoms of cytoreductive surgery (CRS)/hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) patients and to assess PC impact by analysing symptom burden before and after PC interventions.

Methods: CRS/HIPEC patients with two PC visits within 5 months postoperatively (2016-2021) at a tertiary care centre were identified from a retrospective database.

Factors associated with quality of life (QOL) scores among methadone patients in Myanmar.

The Drug Dependency Treatment and Research Unit (DDTRU) in Myanmar established opioid substitution with methadone in 2006. Reducing HIV transmission could be affected by eliminating the unsafe needle sharing among injecting drug uses and treatment with opioid substitution. The quality of life (QOL) among the clients retained in the methadone program is important for their personal development and is an indication of the treatment efficacy.

Palliative Care and Characterization of Symptoms in Patients Undergoing Cytoreductive Surgery/Hyperthermic Intraperitoneal Chemotherapy.

Introduction: Palliative care for advanced cancer patients has been associated with improvements in symptom management and quality of life (QoL). Patients with peritoneal metastases undergoing cytoreductive surgery (CRS) and hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) often report symptoms adversely affecting QoL. We characterized and compared symptoms elucidated by palliative care versus surgical providers in this setting.

C-Sulfonylation of 4-Alkylpyridines: Formal Picolyl C-H Activation via Alkylidene Dihydropyridine Intermediates.

4-Picoline derivatives are converted to the corresponding aryl picolyl sulfones upon treatment with aryl sulfonyl chlorides and EtN in the presence of catalytic DMAP. The reaction proceeds smoothly for a variety of alkyl and aryl picolines using a range of aryl sulfonyl chlorides. The reaction is believed to involve -sulfonyl 4-alkylidene dihydropyridine intermediates and results in formal sulfonylation of unactivated picolyl C-H bonds.

Clinical information system (CIS) implementation in developing countries: requirements, success factors, and recommendations.

Objective: Clinical Information System (CIS) usage can reduce healthcare costs over time, improve the quality of medical care and safety, and enhance clinical efficiency. However, CIS implementation in developing countries poses additional, different challenges from the developed countries. Therefore, this research aimed to systematically review the literature, gathering and integrating research findings on Success Factors (SFs) in CIS implementation for developing countries.
