Primary childhood germ cell tumors (GCTs) represent a rare and heterogeneous group of tumors that varies in histologic differentiation, age of presentation and clinical outcome. In malignant neoplasms, apoptosis is a prognostic marker and a predictive factor of response to therapy. Therefore, the study of the expression and mutation of molecules involved in the regulation of apoptosis could be useful in order to both predict the clinical outcome and design self-tailored therapeutic approaches.

Background: Patent foramen ovale has been associated with increased risk of ischemic stroke, mainly in case-control studies. The actual PFO-related stroke risk in the general population is unclear.
The presence of subclinical cardiovascular disease has been documented to indicate high coronary risk. This study investigated the impact of subclinical cardiovascular disease derived from echocardiography and carotid ultrasonography on traditional coronary risk stratification using the Framingham risk score (FRS) in a community-based, multiethnic population. Echocardiography and carotid ultrasonography were performed in 1,445 subjects (aged >39 years; 40% men; 53% Hispanic, 20% white, 24% black) from the Northern Manhattan Study.

The effects on the mitral valve gradient (MVG) and mitral valve area (MVA) are not known.
Methods: Twenty seven patients with moderate to severe or severe mitral regurgitation (MR) were enrolled.

Flowering requires the integration of different inductive stimuli, including light, temperature and hormones. In an attempt to assess whether ascorbate (ASC) could contribute to the control of flowering time, we analyzed the effects of increased ASC content on the transition to the reproductive stage in the facultative long-day plant Arabidopsis thaliana. ASC content was increased by spraying leaves with the ASC precursor L-galactono-gamma-lactone.

Brachial flow mediated dilatation (FMD) is a non-invasive measure of vascular function and may be an important marker of preclinical atherosclerosis. Data on the association between FMD and carotid plaque in multi-ethnic populations are limited.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFBackground: Brachial artery flow-mediated dilation (FMD) may predict cardiovascular events in selected high-risk patients. Whether FMD testing predicts cardiovascular events in asymptomatic, lower risk individuals from the general population is unknown.
Methods And Results: As a part of a multi-ethnic, prospective cohort study, the Northern Manhattan Study, we examined FMD by high-resolution ultrasonography in 842 community participants who were free of stroke or myocardial infarction.
Background And Purpose: Left ventricular dysfunction (LVD) is associated with cardiovascular mortality. Its association with ischemic stroke has been mainly documented after myocardial infarction. The stroke risk associated with LVD, especially of mild degree, in the general population is unclear.

The biological activity of AA is defined by its oxidation and subsequent regeneration into the reduced form. Some studies suggest that the total endogenous level of AA influences induction of flowering and senescence.

We prospectively evaluated 1081 Hispanics enrolled in the Northern Manhattan Study during the period of 1993 to 2001. Subjects were aged > or =40 years and free of prior myocardial infarction or stroke.

RT3D contrast and noncontrast 3D images were obtained at rest and peak dose dobutamine infusion and reviewed for image quality. A total of 14 patients underwent complete rest and stress RT3D contrast and noncontrast imaging.

Patients And Methods: Clinicopathological findings, treatment, and outcome of 22 PPB cases observed in 13 Italian Associations for Pediatric Hematology and Oncology centers are reported. Clinical data, surgical notes, pathologic findings, and summaries of treatment were taken from the charts and correlated with outcome by standard statistical methods.
Background And Purpose: Serologic evidence of infection with Chlamydia pneumoniae has been associated with cardiovascular disease, but its relationship with stroke risk remains uncertain. The objective of this study is to determine whether serological evidence of C pneumoniae infection is associated with risk of ischemic stroke.
Methods: A population-based case-control study was performed in an urban, multiethnic population.
Ascorbic acid oxidase (AAO) is a plant blue-copper protein catalyzing dioxygen reduction to water using ascorbic acid as the electron donor. In spite of extensive molecular characterization the physiological role of AAO is still uncertain. Abundant mRNA, protein and activity of AAO were observed in illuminated leaves of Cucurbita pepo.

Acetylcholine immunoreactivity was also evaluated in cerebrocortical cholinergic fibers by immunohistochemistry. Choline alphoscerate or rivastigmine, but not choline increased acetylcholine levels as well as [(3)H]hemicholinium-3 binding used as a marker of high affinity cholinergic transporter.

In 6-month-old rats, the rank order density of muscarinic cholinergic receptor subtypes was M1>M2>M4>M3>M5 both in frontal and occipital cortex. A not homogeneous distribution of different receptor subtypes throughout cerebrocortical layers of frontal or occipital cortex was found.

Impaired fasting glucose or prediabetic status, defined as a fasting glucose level of 100 to 125 mg/dl, was present in 95 subjects (16%). Endothelial function was determined using FMD during reactive hyperemia.

Methods: A population-based, case-control study included 146 patients with first ischemic stroke and 195 age-, gender-, and race/ethnicity-matched community control subjects. ECG-LAA was defined as either P-wave duration >120 ms or P-terminal force in precordial lead V1 (PTFV1) >40 ms.
Background: Leukocyte count has been associated with cardiovascular and cerebrovascular disease in several studies. We hypothesized that white blood cell count is associated with endothelial reactivity.
Methods And Results: Leukocyte count was measured in a sample of stroke-free community participants undergoing brachial artery testing for endothelial reactivity.
Background: Data on the presence of myocardial abnormalities in long-term Hodgkin disease survivors are contradictory. The purpose of this study was to determine if myocardial performance index (MPI) was capable of discovering cardiac abnormalities.
Procedure: Echocardiographic evaluation was performed in 31 survivors of Hodgkin disease (mean age 17.
The fact that anthracyclines are cardiotoxic seriously narrows their therapeutic index in cancer therapy. The cardiotoxic risk increases with the cumulative dose and may lead to congestive heart failure (CHF) and dilated cardiomyopathy in adults and in children. The prevention of anthracycline-induced cardiotoxicity is particularly important in children who can be expected to survive for decades after being cured of their malignancy.
