Article Synopsis
  • Latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) screening is essential for solid organ transplant (SOT) recipients, but many centers in Turkey are not adequately performing these screenings.
  • In a study involving 766 SOT patients, 46.9% tested positive for LTBI, but only about half of those treated were registered, and there was a low completion rate of treatment.
  • The findings highlight the need for better TB risk assessment and adherence to national guidelines to improve pre-transplant care for SOT recipients in Turkey.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to evaluate the prognostic value of various factors, introducing the neutrophil-to-C-reactive protein ratio (NCR) as a potential predictor for post-surgery complications in pancreatic cancer.
  • Involving 92 patients who had pancreaticoduodenectomy, the study used statistical analyses to determine important cutoff values and independent risk factors for complications.
  • Results showed that low levels of lymphocyte-to-C-reactive protein ratio, albumin levels below 3.6, and NCR below 0.28 were significant indicators of overall survival and could guide better postoperative care for pancreatic cancer patients.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigated whether serum levels of Human Epididymitis Protein 4 (HE4) increase in rats with pancreatitis induced by cerulein, focusing on 24 male Sprague-Dawley rats divided into four groups.
  • Results indicated significant differences in histopathological damage among the pancreatitis groups, with damage escalating alongside the cerulein dosage, while the control group showed the least damage.
  • The research concluded that HE4 levels were higher in mild pancreatitis but found no correlation between HE4 levels and the severity of the condition, despite notable differences in other enzyme levels like amylase and lipase.

Objective: An inguinal hernia may transform to an incarcerated hernia, which would require emergency surgery with increased morbidity and mortality. This study aims to analyze whether it is possible to predict intestinal ischemia in incarcerated hernia using complete blood count parameters and serum C-reactive protein (CRP).

Methods: Medical records of 129 patients were used to analyze whether there is a correlation between intestinal ischemia and laboratory parameters.

Objective: The aim of this study is to evaluate the early results of robotic surgery-assisted low anterior resection for rectal cancer and transvaginal specimen extraction, regarding the operative time, operative and early postoperative complications, hospital stay, and pathological reports in a series of 10 patients.

Methods: From November 2016 to October 2019, case series study on patients diagnosed with RC was included in this study. All robotic-assisted low anterior resection of the rectum, vaginal removal of the specimen, colorectal anastomosis, and loop ileostomies were performed using the Da Vinci XI system.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study investigated the protective effects of boric acid (BA) on liver injury caused by ischemia-reperfusion (IR) after biliary blockage in female rats, comparing a control group, an IR group, and a BA-treated IR group.
  • - Results showed that both IR groups experienced higher liver enzyme levels and lower albumin levels compared to the control, but the BA+IR group exhibited better antioxidant status and less total oxidant status.
  • - Histopathological analysis revealed significant liver damage in the IR group, while the BA+IR group showed less severe inflammation and cellular damage, suggesting BA's potential as a protective agent in cholestatic liver injury.

Varicocele, which is one of the causes of infertility in men, can be defined as the expansion of spermatic cord veins. The presence of apelin and apelin receptor (APJ) in many tissues and the effects of apelin have been reported in several studies. There is no study showing apelin and APJ protein expressions in normal and varicocele-induced testicular tissues.

Article Synopsis
  • This study aimed to assess how different intraabdominal pressure levels during laparoscopic cholecystectomy affect oxidative stress markers in patients.
  • 90 healthy patients were divided into three groups based on the CO pneumoperitoneum pressure used (7 mmHg, 10 mmHg, and 13 mmHg), with blood samples taken at various stages of the procedure to measure oxidative stress indicators.
  • Results showed that higher intraabdominal pressure (Group 3) significantly increased oxidative stress markers, indicating that higher pressures during surgery may lead to more oxidative stress in patients.

Purpose: To evaluate intraocular pressure (IOP) and extraocular orbital vessels with color Doppler ultrasound (CDU) and investigate the effects of obesity on retrobulbar blood flow.

Methods: Fifty-nine patients were included in this prospective study. Patients were divided into two groups according to body mass index: Group 1 (31 obese patients) and Group 2 (28 non-obese patients).

Objective: Oxidative stress is one of the major causes of methotrexate induced lung injury (MILI). Alpha-lipoic acid (ALA), which occurs naturally in human food, has antioxidative and anti-inflammatory activities. The aim of this study was to research the potential protective role of ALA on MILI in rats.

Objective: Although all animal studies are conducted in line with a specific purpose, we think that not all animal studies are performed for a scientific purpose but for personal curiosity or to fulfill a requirement. The aim of the present study is to reveal the purposes of experimental studies conducted on animals.

Matherial And Methods: We searched for experimental studies performed on rats in general surgery clinics via PubMed, and obtained the e-mail addresses of the corresponding authors for each study.

Gastric glomus tumors (GGTs) are unusual benign, subepithelial, mesenchymal neoplasms of modified smooth muscle cells representing a neoplastic counterpart of glomus bodies. A 38-year-old woman was admitted to our clinic presenting morbid obesity. Routine preoperative evaluations, such as laboratory analysis, abdominal ultrasonography, and upper gastrointestinal endoscopy, were performed.

As the rise on the prevalence of obesity, it is related with physical impairment of joints, especially in the lumbar spine and knee joints. Losing body weight can reduce or eliminate pain of head, neck, shoulder, lumbar spine and knees. By performing a laparoscopic bariatric surgery we demonstrated a significant improvement on the pain by body weight reduction.

Purpose: Remarkable differences in weight loss have been observed in obese patients undergoing laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (LSG). These high variations might be partly explained by genetic factors. The rs9939609 fat mass and obesity-associated gene (FTO) polymorphism has been implicated in the susceptibility of obesity.
