Article Synopsis
  • * About 9.8% of the patients died during hospitalization, with older individuals and those with preexisting kidney issues showing higher mortality rates due to severe injuries and complications.
  • * Key factors influencing mortality included age, injury severity, shock, and certain elevated lab values, highlighting the need for better disaster preparedness and health care improvements for future events.

Background: Peritoneal dialysis-associated peritonitis is a common and severe complication of peritoneal dialysis, associated with high morbidity and mortality. However, there's a lack of research on refractory peritonitis, which is difficult to manage and has a poor prognosis. Our study aimed to investigate factors affecting clinical outcomes in peritoneal dialysis patients with refractory peritonitis over a 12-year period at a medical faculty hospital in Turkey.

Article Synopsis
  • Millions are affected by natural disasters annually, leading to serious medical issues like crush syndrome, which often results in acute kidney injury tied to high mortality rates.
  • This study analyzed data from 1024 patients with crush syndrome after the February 2023 earthquakes in Kahramanmaras, focusing on their treatment and outcomes in Turkish hospitals.
  • The findings revealed high rates of acute kidney injury and hemodialysis treatment, with a 9.8% in-hospital mortality rate, highlighting the urgent need for improved emergency response training and protocols for managing kidney health in disaster scenarios.

Objectives: Sarcopenia is common in chronic kidney disease and associated with increased mortality. We investigated the prevalence of sarcopenia, defined as low muscle mass by the psoas muscle index, in endstage renal disease patients on waiting lists for kidney transplant and determined its association with prognostic nutritional index, C-reactive protein-toalbumin ratio, cardiovascular events, and mortality.

Materials And Methods: Our study included 162 patients with end-stage renal disease and 87 agematched healthy controls.

Introduction: Peritoneal dialysis (PD) remains understudied in disaster nephrology. This retrospective multicenter study explores the experiences of PD survivors following the February 6, 2023, KahramanmaraÅŸ Earthquake.

Methods: Adult PD patients from 11 affected cities were analyzed to assess challenges faced during and postearthquake, alongside clinical outcomes.

Introduction: Data regarding inactivated vaccines for SARS-CoV-2 in patients undergoing maintenance hemodialysis (MHD) are limited. We aimed to investigate humoral responses induced by CoronaVac compared to BNT162b2 in this population.

Methods: In this multicenter prospective cohort study, adult patients undergoing MHD who lacked a history of COVID-19 and decided to get vaccinated with BNT162b2 or CoronaVac were enrolled.

Introduction: Hemodialysis (HD) patients have increased risk for short-term adverse outcomes of COVID-19. However, complications and survival at the post-COVID-19 period have not been published extensively.

Methods: We conducted a national, multicenter observational study that included adult maintenance HD patients recovered from confirmed COVID-19.

Purpose: Prognostic nutritional index (PNI), a composite indicator of inflammation and nutritional status, has recently been recognized as an independent prognostic marker for chronic kidney disease (CKD). We aimed to investigate PNI and its relationship with mortality in elderly patients with CKD.

Methods: Three hundred and fifty-nine patients over the age of 80 years with stage 3-4 CKD were enrolled in this retrospective study.

Kidney function may be impaired during pregnancy due to various reasons, and the physiological changes of pregnancy may unmask or worsen pre-existing kidney disease. Herein, we report a pregnant patient presenting with nephrotic-range proteinuria. She later developed acute kidney injury and pre-eclampsia.

Purpose: Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a major morbidity, and its prevalence increases with age. However, there appears to be some confusion about the prognosis of CKD in aged patients, because, it has its own characteristics different from youngers. In this study, we investigated the progression of CKD and related factors in aged patients.

Objective: The renal parenchymal disease spectrum in geriatric patients is similar to that in younger patients and can be controlled by appropriate treatment. We evaluated the clinicopathological features of kidney biopsies from geriatric patients.

Materials And Methods: One hundred nine native kidney biopsies from older patients (> 65 years old) obtained from 2005 to 2014 were evaluated retrospectively.

Introduction: The number of geriatric patients is increasing in hemodialysis population over the years and mortality is higher in this group of patients. This study evaluated the factors affecting geriatric hemodialysis patient survival.

Materials And Methods: This retrospective cohort study enrolled patients discharged from our nephrology clinic from 2009 to 2014.

Background: Atypical hemolytic uremic syndrome (aHUS) is a very rare disease, which presents with microangiopathic hemolytic anemia, thrombocytopenia, and acute kidney injury. Progression to end-stage renal disease (ESRD) from acute kidney injury is observed in 60% of aHUS cases. The prognosis of aHUS patients who undergo kidney transplantation (Ktx) is generally poor, but these patients should be treated prophylactically with eculizumab to prevent recurrence after transplantation.

Differential diagnosis of post-transplant infections should include rare/uncommon foci and pathogens. We present a rare case of life-threatening infection, a splenic abscess in a 53-year-old woman who was transplanted with a cadaveric kidney 5 months previously. The patient was admitted to our clinic with chills, shivering, and fever.

Background: New-onset diabetes after transplantation (NODAT) is a common metabolic complication. Most conventional immunosuppressive medications, especially steroids and tacrolimus, are responsible for its development. NODAT may rarely be associated with severe, life-threating complications in kidney transplantation recipients.

Article Synopsis
  • There is a growing disparity between the number of available organs and the demand for cadaveric transplants in the country, prompting an evaluation of the factors influencing patient selection on the waiting list.
  • In a study comparing patients who received transplants to those who remained on the waiting list, factors such as age, body mass index, and presence of cardiovascular disease were significant, with transplanted patients being generally younger and healthier.
  • The analysis identified that older age, diabetes, and other health risks correlated with lower chances of receiving a transplant, indicating a preference for selecting lower-risk candidates due to concerns over complications and limited organ availability.

Background/aims: A relation between some genetic mutations and chronic pancreatitis (CP) has been reported. However, the relation of genetic mutation to alcoholic CP (ACP) and idiopathic CP (ICP) still remains controversial. In this study, we investigated the prevalence of protease serine 1 (PRSS1), serine protease inhibitor, Kazal type 1 (SPINK1) SPINK1 and cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR) mutations in ACP and ICP patients in Turkey.

Hepatitis B viral liver disease (HBVLD) is a major worldwide health problem. It is estimated over 300 million people have had hepatitis B virus infection and that one-third of these have chronic HBVLD. Little effective therapy exists for HBVLD even though high dose interferon (IFN) has been advocated.
