Fluvoxamine reduces physiologic reactivity to trauma scripts in posttraumatic stress disorder.

This study assessed the effect of open-label fluvoxamine treatment for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depressive symptoms, and physiologic arousal to trauma cues. Baseline psychometric ratings and physiologic assessments of heart rate and blood pressure responses to individualized, taped trauma scripts were determined for 16 patients with PTSD and 16 mentally healthy age- and gender-matched control subjects exposed to at least 1 serious trauma. Patients with PTSD had greater autonomic reactivity than control subjects at baseline, with physiologic measures correlating with the severity of the PTSD for the combined groups.

Nuclear NonO/p54(nrb) protein is a nonclassical carbonic anhydrase.

The growing carbonic anhydrase (CA) gene family includes 11 enzymatically active isozymes in mammals. Each of them has a characteristic cellular and subcellular distribution pattern. In this report, we demonstrate for the first time a nuclear protein with CA activity.

The changing incidence and spectrum of thyroid carcinoma in Tasmania (1978-1998) during a transition from iodine sufficiency to iodine deficiency.

Exposure to ionizing radiation, changing levels of iodine nutrition, and increased pathologic diagnosis of clinically unimportant thyroid neoplasia have all been proposed as explanations for a worldwide rise in the incidence of thyroid carcinoma (TC) over the past 6 decades. Tasmania is geographically an area of endemic iodine deficiency. In this report, we describe the spectrum of TC in a population averaging 450,000 persons during a 21-yr period that spans the communities transition from iodine sufficiency to iodine deficiency after discontinuation of universal iodine prophylaxis in the mid 1980s.

Speech perception without hearing.

In this study of visual phonetic speech perception without accompanying auditory speech stimuli, adults with normal hearing (NH; n = 96) and with severely to profoundly impaired hearing (IH; n = 72) identified consonant-vowel (CV) nonsense syllables and words in isolation and in sentences. The measures of phonetic perception were the proportion of phonemes correct and the proportion of transmitted feature information for CVs, the proportion of phonemes correct for words, and the proportion of phonemes correct and the amount of phoneme substitution entropy for sentences. The results demonstrated greater sensitivity to phonetic information in the IH group.

Diurnal variations in the mood and performance of highly practised young women living under strictly controlled conditions.

The diurnal variation in a range of psychological functions and core body temperature were investigated in a series of studies involving a total of 24 highly practised young women who lived in a controlled environment and on a strictly regimented 24-hour routine for 6 or 7 days. Ten participants were exposed to the natural light/dark cycle (L/Dc) through windows, whereas the 14 remaining participants saw no daylight, but all had access to normal clock time. A battery of mood and performance tests was completed every 2 hours whilst awake (08:00-00:00), resulting in nine equally spaced measures per waking day.

Beyond the three-process model of alertness: estimating phase, time on shift, and successive night effects.

This paper starts by summarizing the development and refinement of the additive three-process model of alertness first published by Folkard and Akerstedt in 1987. It reviews some of the successes that have been achieved by the model in not only predicting variations in subjective alertness on abnormal sleep-wake schedules but also in accounting for objective measures of sleep latency and duration. Nevertheless, predictions derived from the model concerning alertness on different shifts, and over successive night shifts, are difficult to reconcile with published data on accident risk.

Crystallization and preliminary X-ray crystallographic studies on the herpes simplex virus 1 single-stranded DNA binding protein.

Crystals of a 60-amino-acid C-terminal deletion mutant of the herpes simplex virus 1 single-stranded DNA binding protein, ICP8, have been grown by hanging drop vapor diffusion. The colorless crystals grow as thin plates to a maximum size of approximately 0.3 mm x 0.

How adult beliefs shape the speech communities of a child who has multiple disabilities.

Ethnographic and micro-ethnographic techniques were used to investigate how the strategies employed by two adults (a mother and a physical therapist) to initiate and maintain interactions with a 2-year-old child with multiple disabilities were reflective of the adult partner's beliefs and values about communication in general and about this child in particular. Results indicate that the physical therapist believed in using the child's existing abilities as the primary reference point for establishing a speech community with the child. The mother used the demands of the larger, mostly nondisabled speech community as her primary reference point.

Posttraumatic stress responses in bereaved children after the Oklahoma City bombing.

Objective: To investigate the responses of middle and high school students exposed to the 1995 Oklahoma City bombing across a spectrum of loss.

Method: A questionnaire measuring exposure, personal consequences, initial response, and current posttraumatic stress and other symptoms was administered to 3,218 students 7 weeks after the explosion.

Results: More than one third of the sample knew someone killed in the explosion.

Molecular Phylogeny and Biogeography of the Native Rodents of Madagascar (Muridae: Nesomyinae): A Test of the Single-Origin Hypothesis.

Complete nucleotide sequences from the mitochondrial cytochrome b gene (1143 bp) were used to investigate the phylogenetic relationships among the native rodents of Madagascar. Specifically, this study examines whether the nine genera of nesomyines form a monophyletic group relative to other Old World murids. All nine of the nesomyine genera, including multiple individuals from 15 of the 21 described species, were included in the analysis, and their monophyly was assessed relative to the murid subfamilies Mystromyinae, Petromyscinae, Dendromurinae, Cricetomyinae, Murinae, Rhizomyinae, and Calomyscinae.

Distribution of rest days in 12 hour shift systems: impacts on health, wellbeing, and on shift alertness.

Objectives: To investigate of the effects of distribution of rest days in 12 hour shift systems. Although several studies have examined the effects of compressing work schedules by comparing 8 and 12 hour shift systems, there is little published research examining the various forms of 12 hour shift system.

Methods: An abridged version of the standard shiftwork index which included retrospective alertness ratings was completed by a large sample of industrial shiftworkers.

A plasma cell leukemia patient showing bialleic 14q translocations: t(2;14) and t(11;14).

We report here an IgG/lambda-type plasma cell leukemia patient showing bialleic 14q32 translocations. All immunoglobulins were suppressed in this patient, but a small amount of monoclonal IgG was detected by immunoelectrophoresis. Two cells of six peripheral blood mononuclear cells showed 46,XY,t(2;14)(q11;q32), i(8)(q10), t(11;14)(q13;q32), del(12)(q13.

Localization of hyaluronan in pseudocapsule from total hip arthroplasty.

Hyaluronan is a large glycosaminoglycan present in normal synovial fluid imparting important viscoelastic properties for joint lubrication. In normal and noninflammatory conditions, hyaluronan has been localized to the lining layer of the synovial membrane, specifically synovial fibroblasts. Prosthetic joint fluid contains large amounts of hyaluronan, the source of which has not been determined.

The effect of activity on the waking temperature rhythm in humans.

Nine healthy female subjects were studied when exposed to the natural light-dark cycle, but living for 17 "days" on a 27h day (9h sleep, 18h wake). Since the circadian endogenous oscillator cannot entrain to this imposed period, forced desynchronization between the sleep/activity cycle and the endogenous circadian temperature rhythm took place. This enabled the effects of activity on core temperature to be assessed at different endogenous circadian phases and at different stages of the sleep/activity cycle.

Nefazodone in post-traumatic stress disorder: results from six open-label trials.

Nefazodone, an antidepressant which blocks serotonin (5-HT)2 receptors and 5-HT reuptake, was evaluated in the treatment of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in six open-label studies involving both civilians and combat veterans. Our objective was to report this available pooled data to characterize the response of this drug in PTSD. Specifically, we looked at response rates using three different criteria, the effect of nefazodone on each PTSD cluster and individual symptoms and, lastly, variables that might predict response.

Lack of evidence that feedback from lifestyle alters the amplitude of the circadian pacemaker in humans.

Two groups of healthy subjects were studied indoors, first while living normally for 8 days (control section) and then for 18 x 27 h "days" (experimental section). This schedule forces the endogenous (body clock-driven) and exogenous (lifestyle-driven) components of circadian rhythms to run independently. Rectal temperature and wrist movement were measured throughout and used as markers of the amplitude of the circadian rhythm, with the rectal temperature also "purified" by means of the activity record to give information about the endogenous oscillator.

Methods: For 6 or 7 days the volunteers (24, highly practiced young women) were required to retire to bed at 0000 and were awakened at 0800. A battery of mood and performance tests was completed every 2 hours while the women were awake; the result was 9 equally spaced measures per day.

Shift length as a determinant of retrospective on-shift alertness.

Objectives: This study examined the combined effects of shift length (8 versus 12 hours) and night-to-morning-shift changeover time (0600 versus 0700) on retrospective on-shift alertness ratings.

Methods: An abridged version of the Standard Shiftwork Index, which included retrospective alertness ratings, was completed by 4 groups of industrial shift workers. Two groups worked 8-hour shift systems and started their morning shifts at either 0600 or 0700; the other 2 groups worked 12-hour systems, starting their day shifts at either 0600 or 0700.

The glutamine-rich domain of the Drosophila GAGA factor is necessary for amyloid fibre formation in vitro, but not for chromatin remodelling.

The Drosophila GAGA factor binds specifically to the sequence GAGAG, and synergises with nucleosome remodelling factor to remodel chromatin in vitro. It consists of an N-terminal domain (POZ/BTB) which mediates protein-protein interactions, a central region which contains the DNA-binding domain, and a C-terminal glutamine-rich region. It is shown that the glutamine-rich region is responsible for the formation of fibres in vitro which, on the basis of their tinctorial properties and CD spectra, may be classified as amyloid fibres.

Carboxypeptidase A: native, zinc-removed and mercury-replaced forms.

The crystal structure of the zinc-containing exopeptidase bovine carboxypeptidase A (CPA) has been refined to high resolution, based on a data set collected from a single crystal, incorporating new sequence information based on cloning of the bovine gene. In addition, new refined structures are available for the zinc-removed form of the enzyme, apo-CPA, as well as the mercury-replaced form, Hg-CPA. The native structure reveals that the zinc-bound water molecule does not appear to more loosely bound than the rest of the zinc ligands, at least when B-factor values are considered.

Cux/CDP homeoprotein is a component of NF-muNR and represses the immunoglobulin heavy chain intronic enhancer by antagonizing the bright transcription activator.

Nuclear matrix attachment regions (MARs) flanking the immunoglobulin heavy chain intronic enhancer (Emu) are the targets of the negative regulator, NF-muNR, found in non-B and early pre-B cells. Expression library screening with NF-muNR binding sites yielded a cDNA clone encoding an alternatively spliced form of the Cux/CDP homeodomain protein. Cux/CDP fulfills criteria required for NF-muNR identity.

Time of day effects in, and the relationship between, sleep quality and movement.

The study aimed to measure the effects of a 27-h 'day' sleep-wake regime on actigraphic and subjective sleep variables, and to examine the relationships between these variables. Nine subjects spent 30 days and nights in the laboratory. After sleeping 8 h for each of 8 nights, the subjects had an imposed 27-h 'day', for 18 'days', remaining in bed for 9 h on each sleep period.
