Objective: The aetiology of epilepsy is known to have genetic contributions, yet results from genome-wide association studies (GWAS) have not always been consistent. We undertook a systematic review in order to identify risk variants for epilepsy.

Methods: This systematic review was conducted in accordance with the PRISMA protocol.

Telomere length is an index of cellular aging. Healthy lifestyles are associated with reduced oxidative stress and longer telomeres, whereas unhealthy behaviors are related to shorter telomeres and greater biological aging. This investigation was designed to determine if strength training accounted for differences in telomere length in a random sample of 4814 US adults.

Article Synopsis
  • The project aimed to create films that help parents make decisions about the HPV vaccine for their teenagers by using evidence and feedback from the community.
  • They worked with parents and professionals to understand what information is important, such as the benefits and safety of the vaccine, and made sure the films were in different languages.
  • Parents liked the films and suggested using social media and schools to share information about the HPV vaccine before asking for consent.

Background: Bucket-handle meniscal tears are large longitudinal vertical meniscal tears that have an attached fragment flipped into the intercondylar notch. Meniscal repair attempts to restore the function of the meniscus and aims to preserve joint mechanics. Alternatively, meniscectomy results in quicker recovery but may lead to future degeneration.

  • Hypochlorous acid (HOCl) is important for fighting pathogens, but too much or too little can cause tissue damage and inflammation.
  • The new HOClSense dyes use a chlorination-based mechanism to provide detailed visualization of HOCl levels in sub-cellular environments, offering both switch-on and switch-off detection with different emission colors.
  • Researchers demonstrated HOClSense's effectiveness by mapping HOCl in cell structures like plasma membranes and lysosomes, revealing insights into HOCl production in diseases like Niemann-Pick.

Outline a quality initiative establishing an institutional service line for neonatal transcatheter device closure of the patent ductus arteriosus (TDC-PDA). A retrospective descriptive observational study surrounds programmatic approach to TDC-PDA in premature neonates with process measure spanning education, implementation, referral, and post-procedural care. Metrics tracked pre- and post-program creation with statistical analyses performed.

Purpose: Our aim was to explore the effect of ambient lighting on the pattern ERG (PERG).

Methods: We compared PERGs recorded in two conditions; room lights on and room lights off. PERGs from 21 adult participants were recorded from each eye to high contrast checks of 50' side width, reversing 3rps in a large (30°) and then standard (15°) field.

Article Synopsis
  • Infants with neonatal opioid withdrawal syndrome (NOWS) cared for using the Eat, Sleep, Console (ESC) approach experienced less medication treatment and shorter hospital stays compared to those receiving usual care.
  • The study aimed to compare feeding practices and weight change in infants treated with ESC versus usual care across 26 hospitals in the US.
  • Results showed that a higher percentage of infants in the ESC group were breastfed and received exclusive breast milk, indicating a more favorable feeding outcome compared to the usual care group.

Objective: Adult-onset Still's disease (AOSD) and secondary hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (sHLH) are both hyperferritinemic cytokine storm syndromes that can be difficult to distinguish from each other in hospitalized patients. The objective of this study was to compare the inflammatory markers ferritin, D-dimer, C-reactive protein (CRP), and soluble CD25 (sCD25) in patients with AOSD and sHLH. These four markers were chosen as they are widely available and represent different aspects of inflammatory diseases: macrophage activation (ferritin); endothelialopathy (D-dimer); interleukin-1/interleukin-6/tumour necrosis factor elevation (CRP) and T cell activation (sCD25).

Background: The objectives of this longitudinal study were to understand how comorbid rheumatic disease and depression symptoms were associated with at-work productivity among young adults, and to examine whether workplace support modified this association.

Methods: Seventy-six Canadian young adults who were employed and living with a rheumatic disease were surveyed three times over 27 months. Morbidity was defined by whether participants reported severe rheumatic disease symptoms and/or depressive symptoms.

Article Synopsis
  • The Severe Psoriatic Arthritis trial aims to evaluate treatment outcomes for newly diagnosed PsA patients with poor prognostic factors using standard csDMARDs, combination therapies, or early biologics.
  • This UK multicenter trial includes patients with specific criteria and measures effectiveness through the PsA disease activity score at 24 weeks.
  • The study seeks to determine if early intensive therapy can improve patient outcomes, considering the potential cost-effectiveness of short-term biologics followed by methotrexate.

Objectives: Hearing loss (HL) (receptive communication impairment) is a known risk factor for depression. However, dysphonia (expressive communication impairment), has received little study. We study HL, self-reported voice disorder, and combined impairment as risk factors for depression in a large national cohort.

Objective: Hearing loss has been identified as a major modifiable risk factor for cognitive decline. The Early Age-Related Hearing Loss Investigation (EARHLI) study will assess the mechanisms linking early age-related hearing loss (ARHL) and cognitive impairment.

Study Design: Randomized, controlled, single-site, early phase II, superiority trial.

Importance: The function-based eat, sleep, console (ESC) care approach substantially reduces the proportion of infants who receive pharmacologic treatment for neonatal opioid withdrawal syndrome (NOWS). This reduction has led to concerns for increased postnatal opioid exposure in infants who receive pharmacologic treatment. However, the effect of the ESC care approach on hospital outcomes for infants pharmacologically treated for NOWS is currently unknown.

The application of cryotherapy in the extraction of airway blood clots has gained increased precedence over Fogarty catheter and biopsy forceps. The cryoprobe, passed through a flexible bronchoscope, adheres and aids in the removal of foreign body through cryoadhesion within minutes. Besides blood clots, this method was found to be extremely efficient in removing different kinds of foreign bodies including food particles like peanuts, pills, and inspissated mucus.

Objective:  To assess the association between use of an oxytocin decision support checklist with oxytocin usage and clinical outcomes.

Study Design:  We conducted a retrospective cohort study of patients with singleton gestations at 37 weeks or greater who received oxytocin during labor from October 2012 to February 2017 at an integrated community health care system during three exposure periods: (1) prechecklist; (2) after paper checklist implementation; and (3) after checklist integration into the electronic medical record (EMR). The checklist was a clinical decision support tool to standardize the dosing and management of oxytocin.

In this study, we examine students' reasons for pursuing elective training focused on medical racism and systemic health inequities at a midwestern medical school. Data collection included semi-structured interviews with students who participated in an optional course focused on these topics. We analyzed their motivations, goals, and interests using reflexive thematic analysis and created three themes based on students' responses.

Objective: Using Canadian Alliance of Pediatric Rheumatology Investigators (CAPRI) juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) registry data, we describe (1) clinical characteristics of patients with JIA transitioning to adult care, (2) prevalence of disease-related damage and complications, and (3) changes in disease activity during the final year prior to transfer.

Methods: Registry participants who turned 17 years between February 2017 and November 2021 were included. Clinical characteristics and patient-reported outcomes (PROs) at the last recorded pediatric rheumatology visit, and changes observed in the year prior to that visit were analyzed.
