Introduction: Vascular injury during acetabular screw fixation is a life-threatening complication of total hip arthroplasty. This study uses three-dimensional computed tomography to (1) measure absolute distance from the external iliac artery (EIA) to the acetabulum, (2) determine available bone stock along the EIA path, and (3) create a novel acetabular vascular risk map.

Methods: A retrospective radiographic study was conducted using three-dimensional CT.

Study Question: Is there an association between the somatic loss of PTEN (phosphatase and tensin homolog) and ARID1A (AT-rich interaction domain 1A) and endometriosis disease severity and worse clinical outcomes?

Summary Answer: Somatic PTEN loss in endometriosis epithelium was associated with greater disease burden and subsequent surgical complexity.

What Is Known Already: Somatic cancer-driver mutations including those involving the PTEN and ARID1A genes exist in endometriosis without cancer; however, their clinical impact remains unclear.

Study Design, Size, Duration: This prospective longitudinal study involved endometriosis tissue and clinical data from 126 participants who underwent surgery at a tertiary center for endometriosis (2013-2017), with a follow-up period of 5-9 years.

Seafood is an important resource for global nutrition and food security, with both land and marine aquaculture playing pivotal roles. High visual acuity is key for health and survival of farmed, cultured, and wild fish. Cleaner fish technology to control parasite infestation has become important in marine aquaculture and highlights the importance of visual acuity in the efficacy of cleaner fish species.

Article Synopsis
  • Congenital ocular anomalies (COA) are a leading cause of visual impairment in children in high-income countries, and this study aimed to evaluate their prevalence in European registries.
  • Data from 19 EUROmediCAT registries and one healthcare database revealed a prevalence of COA at 3.47 cases per 10,000 births, with congenital lens anomalies being the most common type.
  • The findings suggest the need for better screening and early diagnosis of COA, highlighting the importance of large-scale epidemiological studies for understanding these conditions.

Background: Relationships between pulmonary hypertension (PHTN), mitral valve intervention (MVI), and death among patients with Shone's syndrome (SS) are unclear. Our recent data suggested temporal progression of MV disease and early survival benefit with MVI at initial operation. In this expanded cohort, we characterized trajectory and impact of PHTN on survival, and its relationship to MVI(s).

The representation of intelligence is achieved by patterns of connections among neurons in brains and machines. Brains grow continuously, such that their patterns of connections develop through activity-dependent specification, with the continuing ontogenesis of individual experience. The theory of active inference proposes that the developmental organization of sentient systems reflects general processes of informatic self-evidencing, through the minimization of free energy.

Background: Odronextamab, a CD20×CD3 bispecific antibody that engages cytotoxic T cells to destroy malignant B cells, has demonstrated encouraging activity across multiple subtypes of relapsed/refractory (R/R) B-cell non-Hodgkin lymphoma.

Patients And Methods: This phase II study (ELM-2; NCT03888105) evaluated odronextamab in patients with R/R follicular lymphoma after two or more lines of systemic therapy. Patients received intravenous odronextamab in 21-day cycles, with step-up dosing in cycle 1 to help mitigate the risk of cytokine release syndrome, until disease progression or unacceptable toxicity.

Use of high-stakes exams in a course has been associated with gender, racial, and socioeconomic inequities. We investigated whether offering students the opportunity to retake an exam makes high-stakes exams more equitable. Following the control value theory of achievement emotions, we hypothesized that exam retakes would increase students' perceived control over their performance and decrease the value of a single exam attempt, thereby maximizing exam performance.

Endometriosis is a gynecological disorder associated with local inflammation and neuroproliferation. Increased nerve bundle density has been attributed to increased expression of nerve growth factor (NGF) and interleukin-1β (IL-1β). Immunohistochemical analysis was carried out on 12 patients presenting with all three anatomic subtypes of endometriosis (deep, superficial peritoneal, endometrioma) at surgery, with at least two surgically excised subtypes available for analysis.

Background: Hirschsprung's disease is a rare congenital anomaly of the colon with absence of the ganglionic nerve cells. The treatment of the anomaly is surgical.

Methods: This population-based data-linkage cohort study was part of the EUROlinkCAT project and investigated mortality and morbidity for the first 5 years of life for European children diagnosed with Hirschsprung's disease.

The breakdown of plant material fuels soil functioning and biodiversity. Currently, process understanding of global decomposition patterns and the drivers of such patterns are hampered by the lack of coherent large-scale datasets. We buried 36,000 individual litterbags (tea bags) worldwide and found an overall negative correlation between initial mass-loss rates and stabilization factors of plant-derived carbon, using the Tea Bag Index (TBI).

Article Synopsis
  • Understanding the unique anatomical and functional features of teleost fish visual systems can shed light on their health and survival in both natural and aquaculture settings.
  • Research focused on the spotted wolffish and lumpfish's visual systems employed various microscopy techniques to analyze photoreceptor cells and retinal structures, highlighting different expressions of photoreceptor markers XAP-1 and XAP-2.
  • Findings revealed unique retinal configurations and biofluorescence in both species, suggesting that these fish may utilize their visual systems in unprecedented ways, which could have implications for aquaculture practices.

Article Synopsis
  • Bryophytes are significant photoautotrophs that play key roles in water retention, carbon fixation, and nitrogen cycling across various ecosystems including forests, tundras, and deserts.
  • Research highlights the importance of understanding how climate change affects bryophytes, as they can both buffer ecosystems from changes and face survival challenges due to unknown tolerance thresholds.
  • As ecosystems shift due to climate change, the influence of bryophytes on global biogeochemical cycles may change, potentially altering the magnitude of their impact on ecosystem functions.

Two NAD(P)H-biosensing probes consisting of 1,3,3-trimethyl-3H-indolium and 3-quinolinium acceptors, linked by thiophene, , and 3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene, , bridges are detailed. We synthesized probes and , replacing the thiophene connection in probe with phenyl and 2,1,3-benzothiadiazole units, respectively. Probe was prepared by substituting probe 's 3-quinolinium unit with a 1-methylquinoxalin-1-ium unit.

To provide an updated meta-analysis to evaluate the efficacy and safety of sildenafil on pediatric patients with pulmonary hypertension (PH) associated with congenital heart disease (CHD). To assess the efficacy and safety of sildenafil, five outcomes, time duration of post-operative need for mechanical ventilation, time duration of post-operative ICU stay, length of hospitalization (LOH), the incidence of mortalities and pulmonary arterial pressure to aortic pressure ratio (PAP/AoP) were regarded as primary efficacy outcomes. Standardized mean difference (SMD) was calculated for continuous data.

Background: Precise and correct classification of congenital anomalies is important in epidemiological studies, not only to classify according to etiology but also to group similar congenital anomalies together, to create homogeneous subgroups for surveillance and research. This paper presents the updated EUROCAT (European surveillance of congenital anomalies) subgroups of congenital anomalies and the updated multiple congenital anomaly (MCA) algorithm and provides the underlying arguments for the revisions.

Methods: The EUROCAT methodology is described.
